Tesco delivery slot not needed

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:16

So, I have a slot thatI don't really need.
I am able bodied, not ill, a key worker so still in work.
It was booked before all this took off but I feel rubbish about it as am quite capable of going shopping myself next week (all being well).
I book food delivery purely for convenience in normal times- as many of us do.
Do I :
a) Keep it just in case my situation changes
b) offer it to neighbours (who I don't know) -I would have to pay for their shopping and get it delivered to me
c) give it up and risk nobody benefitting from it - it may just disappear...

I would keep it. I have also always had home delivery - mainly for heavy items like washing powder. I’ve got one delivery booked but Waitrose aren’t accepting any more.

If you give it up, there is no way you could guarantee it went to someone who really needed it unless, as you say, you had someone you knew living nearby who could give you the money for their shopping.

MintyMabel · 21/03/2020 16:06

I did this this morning. OH went shopping yesterday as he forgot I had an online order. Nobody I knew needed it so I gave it up. It disappeared. So, give it away if you can.

Isleepinahedgefund · 21/03/2020 16:06

Just keep it and use it fgs. Really no need to overthink it. Able bodied etc etc regardless you are still allowed to have your shopping delivered!

I’m perfectly able to go to the shops but would paid triple prices today to have had an online delivery because I had to schlep round 4 or 5 shops to find what I needed.

My parents are doing an online shop next week and I’m going to order with them! One less thing to worry about in stressful times.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/03/2020 16:11

I just went into my Asda order (usual shop booked for payday) and about 50% of what was on it is now not available. I feel vaguely sick. We have no car, so although we are able to get out we can’t carry a whole shop! So keep the slot, OP.

Livelovebehappy · 21/03/2020 16:12

Keep it. If you cancel it could go to someone else who needs it even less than you do. I have always done online shopping, and just have a recurring weekly slot as I have delivery saver paid for in advance for the year. I would give it up for someone who really needed it more than me, but you don’t know who the slot is going to if you sacrifice it.

Selmababies · 21/03/2020 16:17

It's probably more a matter of it being people who think it's a good way to increase their social distance. And they're right.
But it's only 'right' up to a point. If self isolaters, including those that are infected and the vulnerable can't get delivery slots, then they are forced to go out themselves and pose much more risk of spreading it and/or subsequently needing icu etc.

Marieo · 21/03/2020 16:20

It could be snapped up by anyone, and offering it to someone else unless you know them well is risky with money involved. I would keep it, but not book anymore.

Teacher12345 · 21/03/2020 16:20

Keep your slot. I ordered from waitrose using click and collect for tomorrow as it was the only thing I could get. Now we are self isolating so can't actually collect it!

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/03/2020 16:25

I use Tesco. I’m self isolating. We have hardly eaten all week so plenty of food. I have a very small order, which could wait. But I kept it and offered to order anything needed for 3 lots of friends. It’s coming today and I will call them to pick theirs up before we bring it in.

In the past I have cancelled a order the day before and out of curiosity checked if it becomes available. It did not so you’re doing the right thing. As for changing the delivery address, you can’t once checked out.

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/03/2020 16:26

Teacher1234
Is a friend getting it for you?

Teacher12345 · 21/03/2020 16:33

Yes Mummyoflittledragon. Ive had to ring them and ask if they will give to her.

RaininSummer · 21/03/2020 16:34

Just checked my planned shop for next Thursday which i booked 3 weeks ago. So many unavailable items that I will probably end up cancelling it.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/03/2020 16:46

Keep it. You’ll be one less person having to go out and about.

It all helps.

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 16:46

I got a slot for today that suddenly appeared yesterday. Was really glad as i am now too ill to go out.

Straycatstrut · 21/03/2020 16:49

Don't keep it. I kept mine. Single mum of two with no car and miles from any shops.

I missed a call from them this morning. I then received a mumbled message , something that sounded like they couldn't find my address.

My order says delivered. It hasn't been. It also says 70% of items have were removed due to being "unavailable". You know, all the most important stuff. I have still been charged.

Nearlyalmost50 · 21/03/2020 16:50

I don't even get this question really -it's better if we can all shop online to minimise social contact. There's no reason to think the slot would go to someone 'needier' just use it and carry on like usual. I always shop online if I can and am doing so now if the opportunity presents itself.

bemoreeverything · 21/03/2020 16:53

I thought you didn't need the shopping but now I realise you still need the food. Why was one of your options to offer it to your neighbours? Unless they are struggling, in which case you could add stuff on for them?

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/03/2020 16:54

Teacher
That’s a relief!!

Nanna50 · 21/03/2020 16:56

I’m a key worker and like you I book slots in advance for convenience.

Since last week I’ve asked my elderly neighbours down the road and my NHS neighbour next door if they want anything added on to save them a trip.

My deliveries are early so usually when the shelves have been replenished so not too many out of stock.

Is there anyone you could help out and add to your delivery?

ClashCityRocker · 21/03/2020 16:57

Keep it.

I cancelled mine.

Next day husband had all the symptoms...

nokidshere · 21/03/2020 17:00

I'm keeping my Monday slot which I booked 3 weeks ago. If we get stuff we don't need now we have plenty of people to pass it on to.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 17:00

I cancelled mine for next week but have kept my following weeks one in case I need it, you can release the slot the day before if you still don’t need it

tulippa · 21/03/2020 17:09

I cancelled my slot for today because most of the items were out of stock. If you can get to the store I think you'd be better off doing it yourself.

FlamingoQueen · 21/03/2020 17:11

I have thought about giving up my usual slot, and if I thought someone in need would get it, I would. A couple of weeks ago I pressed the wrong button and cancelled my shop (was having a thick day!). I immediately tried to rebook it and it had just disappeared.
I would keep it.
I have said to my neighbours that if they want anything from Tesco’s then to let me know and I will order bits for them.
My Tesco man this morning said people were being rude to him whilst delivering. I was just grateful for my shopping.

FlyingFlamingo · 21/03/2020 17:14

I’m keeping mine, I considered cancelling it as we have plenty of tinned/dry stuff in but I would like to have some fresh fruit and veg and we need toilet roll (which may or may not arrive!). I’m a health worker and trying to avoid any unnecessary social contact plus have to consider the fact that I may develop symptoms at any time.
