I've got a 9 year old DS and I'd like him to read some plays and poems while he's at home.

Any recommendations? Thansk

Not sure about plays, but I really enjoyed the poem 'Timothy Winters' by Charles Causley when I was at school. Another was Dulce et decorum est by wilfred Owen.

Oh, the Timothy Winters poem looks great. Thanks

The Works poetry books (ed. Paul Cookson) are fab!

Thank you so much!

Michael Rosen on YouTube is great!

I like Roger McGough (first day at school is lovely/ the lesson is fun but maybe too old for your child?)

I’m a secondary English teacher. I LOVE Ben Zephaniah and also John Agard.

For plays, maybe look up Oxford Playscripts?

Dulce et Decorum (as suggested above) is a wonderful poem, especially if he likes history?

Thelowquietsea · 20/03/2020 19:26

Thank you so much. This is brilliant. I thought I'd hold a Zoom 'thing' with him and some of his friends, to read and talk about a poem...write one of their own etc...a chance for them to hang out, see each other, and do some learning. I'm a writer. I'm trying my absolute best to stay VERY POSITIVE about months at home. Expanding his creative interests will help us both.

Stay well, all. Thanks.

@TheZeppo I'm also a secondary school English teacher. Sorry but you'd have to be INSANE to suggest using The Lesson in this day and age. Not sure about Dulce et Decorum Est for a 9 year old either.

OP the Alan Bennett play of The Wind in the Willows is lovely. And YY to Michael Rosen on YouTube.

TheZeppo · 20/03/2020 19:33

Haha, yes, I see your point IHeartKingThistle. I love it though, so maybe I’m just trying to spread it! Or maybe I’ve just gone mad based on this week 😂

Thelowquietsea · 20/03/2020 19:35

Oh, I love Alan bennett. That's a good call.

You can get Roald Dahl's the Twits in play form.

ShinyMe · 20/03/2020 19:49

You can also watch the Wind in the Willows musical online here:
www.willowsmusical.com/

You could combine it with reading the book and maybe comparing books vs stage production. You can get a free pdf download of the book in several places.

That's a fantastic idea ShinyMe, thank you x
