To be worried

I run a Facebook business page, I am admin of it through my own personal Facebook page, yesterday got a message through my business page from a random middle aged man saying - “can (dds name) keep her secret At the wedding she will be a flower girl She is not potty trained) now had this not included my daughters name I wouldn’t have been worried at all and would have just blocked him and deleted. But now I feel really worried! I don’t know how this weirdo knew my daughters name. I am listed as the admin on my business page so he could click on my profile but I have the highest possible privacy settings on my personal Facebook. My friend said it was worded weirdly and is probably a coded pre-filled message but I’m really freaked out. I immediately banned him from my business page and shut down my own personal Facebook page. I’ve opened a new Facebook page and a new personal messenger, I also set up a completely separate Facebook page so that I could be an admin for my business page. The new personal messenger is linked to my mobile number that I used before so is this safe? I’m so confused about how this all works and feeling panicky. I couldn’t find any help on Facebook about how to report the message to my business page it was just sending me round in circles.

Isn’t it more likely you know him?

user1473878824 · 20/03/2020 11:31

Sorry, rather than him being a complete stranger stalking you?

Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 11:34

No definitely don’t know him, looks like he’s in a different country

How rare is your child's name? Could he have sent the message to the wrong person by mistake?

shinyredbus · 20/03/2020 11:36

I’m so confused. A random man messaged you about your daughter being a flower girl?

Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 11:36

It’s not a rare name at all

Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 11:42

I’m confused too, I just don’t get how he has got my daughters name and he sounds unhinges.

If I’ve set up a new messenger that is a different Facebook account but linked to the same mobile number as before is that safe? Think my old messenger or Facebook page must have been hacked for him to know my daughters name?

I think you are overreacting a bit and ot was just a coincidence if it's a common name

Bluntness100 · 20/03/2020 12:01

I’d assume this was a mistake, that he’s got the wrong person. Likely two people with the same name.

TootsieTweets · 20/03/2020 12:04

What did the actual message say? Did he mention potty training? Confused

Doggotired · 20/03/2020 12:10

I’ve seen this on fb, it happened to someone I know through her business page, exact same message, she replied and it got Pervy and weird. Report him and block him. I think he just targets random business pages ran by women

Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 12:13

But how would he know my daughters name- there’s nothing about her on my business page so how? That is what has bothered me!

OP posts:
Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 12:14

It can’t be a coincidence, a woman with my name and a daughter with the same name as mine?

OP posts:
Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 12:15

He didn’t message me personally anyway- he messaged my business page which isn’t my name it’s the name of the business

Could be someone who knows you (I know you said profile seems to appear to be from another country), or your social media isn't as secure as you think. They could have stalked you for a while and looked at all your previous comments you've made elsewhere, so even if your actual page is private, people can get a lot of info about you from reading things you've commented on in the past. For example, a very odd person who once stalked me managed to find out a name of my friend who was on facebook who had a private page too but her friends list was open. He then looked through all of her friends to find one of my siblings who had pictures of me and my husband. From there he had my husband's name.... From there he was able to go onto the 192.com directory and find out what town we lived in. This, a guy I'd never met or knew existed... Unfortunately the internet is very scary when in the wrong hands even if you're as private as can be.

If you send 100 messages with lets say Megan, you are bound to find number of actual Megans.

Fb business pages can get the weirdest messages

OlaEliza · 20/03/2020 12:39

B&Q sell grips. They might be sold out atm though.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 20/03/2020 12:45

Actually Ola I think they have full stock as no one seems to be buying themGrin

CustardySergeant · 20/03/2020 12:47

OP, you've put quotation marks before can but not where the quote ends, which is why people are confused as to exactly what he said. Can you clarify please?

WorraLiberty · 20/03/2020 12:49

Why would you shut down your own personal FB account? Confused

The world is full of weirdos, just block and move on.

Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 12:57

Sorry, he said “Can (dd’s name) keep her secret At the wedding she will be flower girl She is not potty trained “

Those telling me to get a grip- this is a message come through on a business page about my young daughter, I have ever mentioned her name on my business page.

OP posts:
Snowdropfairy85 · 20/03/2020 12:58

I shut down my personal page because I don’t want this weirdo to be able to hack into and look at my pictures and find out further information

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 20/03/2020 12:59

Again OP. You said your DD has a common name. As I said. If you send enough messages, you hit jackpot eventually.
