I need back up here, or perspective in case IABU. We have 3 kids, one 20 and one 18, plus 10 yr old. 20 yr old was on zero hours in hospitality so has just been laid off. 18 yr old at college now only 1 day a week. We are lucky enough to be debt free, no mortgage or finance, so we will be ok for a while even if we can't work (hubby's job at least is pretty much secure). There have been posts all over fb about all the supermarkets looking for staff, so I've been tagging the kids. 20 yr old is doing nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, to look for jobs. 18 yr old can now do most shifts and I can't see why not. I just had a go at 20 yr old again - get off your ass and get a fckn job, I've shown you there's plenty out there. DH walked out of the room, telling me to 'give it a rest', he thinks because we can afford to support them, I shouldn't be hassling them. Tell me I'm not unreasonable for expecting them to find a job? I'm at the end of my tether.

I don't know. I get why you want them to do this BUT with so many people desperate about how to support themselves/their family I'm not sure I'd be pushing it when you can support them.

You dont need the money and your teens are prime carriers for the virus. Why would you be actively encouraging them to go out? Leave the jobs for people who have no idea how theyre going to pay their bills for the next few months.

I'm not sure this is even for real in all honesty.

MouthBreathingRage · 20/03/2020 10:34

Do you work btw op?

Sandra2010 · 20/03/2020 11:11

Yes, I work, and always have done, when I was 20 I worked 50 hours a week in 2 jobs. This isn't about money as much as ethics. At 20 years old and not in education no-one should be sitting on their ass relying on their parents. I have done my best to instil this but I'm getting no help from DH and 20 yr old especially is just not responding. BTW, supermarkets here are apparently crying out for staff, I think there are enough jobs to go round.

In principle I agree with you that it is important to instill work ethics. But this is not the time as MouthBreathingRage says leave the jobs for those who really need them and keep your dc home instead of spreading things round.

I think you need to take a deep breath, if these coming weeks aren't going to be hell for you. Stay safe and avoid arguments.
