Can’t get food ANYWHERE

GaaaaarlicBread · 20/03/2020 08:21

Husband and I don’t drive , my husband is however, currently having lessons and close to passing but that’ll be a couple of months away as his lessons have been cancelled .
Anyway besides the point, we have two supermarkets by us. An Aldi and a Tesco (Tesco is 40 min walk though and buses have been made less regular now). Neither store have any food, no exaggeration . I have been after work to aldi and husband has too (he finishes late so we thought they might have restocked but no).
We tried to order online last night- Ocado have suspended online shop as they have too many deliveries- Tesco, Asda, Morrison’s, Iceland and Co-op have zero slots until end of April. What do we do? Seriously? We have frozen bits from our last shop but nothing to last us more than a week.
I’m pregnant , so being extra cautious about going out other than work, my husband works shifts and we literally can’t get anything . We have loo roll , shampoo you know normal toiletries but food we have a bit of milk left , and a few tinned things and cous cous etc. A few people on here might say ‘why have you left it until you have nothing’ but we have been trying and trying and it’s getting worse because people are selfish and bulk buy unnecessarily. We both work for the nhs so work long days and this is just ridiculous .
We ended up buying nappies etc for baby even though I’m not quite half way through the pregnancy yet but every single shop is out of baby essentials too so we thought sod it we will get some in case it’s still like this in 4 or so months time.

Any ideas what we can do? Please be kind .

I just wanted to leave a message of support really, to say that it's so out of order. To think that those working to save all our lives are unable to get stuff themselves makes my blood boil.

Supermarkets/government/NHS organisations need to work together quickly to have a priority scheme.

I really hope this happens soon for you.

And most of us who are not panic buying are 100% on your side.Angry

M&S, Waitrose and Asda now opening certain day 8-9 for NHS staff

Daisydrum · 21/03/2020 18:38

From Sainsburys

From Monday 23rd March, we are consolidating our opening hours and all our supermarkets will be open from 8am to 8pm, Monday-Saturday, including those with an Argos store. Sunday opening, Sainsbury’s Local and petrol station opening times will stay the same.
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all our supermarkets will dedicate 8am - 9am to serving elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers, as well as NHS and Social Care workers. They will just need to show us their pass or ID when they visit.

GaaaaarlicBread
I’m so sorry for your situation, but you did give me a nostalgic smile - Birds at Christmas Smile What wouldn’t I give for an elephant’s foot...

poppy54321 · 21/03/2020 18:42

Ask a local church they might have support groups who would be happy to supply or shop for food for you. Local council failing that need to help

Aramox · 21/03/2020 18:50

Look for your local Covid19 mutual aid group on FB? Ours is helping people without food. I’m so sorry OP

GlitterMagicPompom · 21/03/2020 18:59

Hi OP, I noticed that M&S are now having a priority hour n Sundays for NHS workers would that help? Is there a branch near you?
Failing this, have you tried Amazon? Have you got any local farm shops near you? Where I live, our local Delia, corner shops and farm shops are all offering delivery. We also have a group f volunteers in the village to help with food shopping, prescriptions, etc... do you know if anything similar has been organised locally?
So sorry you are going through this! Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy btw!

CarolinaPink · 21/03/2020 18:59

Taxi

copperoliver · 21/03/2020 19:02

Hi Ocado, has opened its site. You have to get in a queue it says about 2 hours but it only took 45 minutes. X

Suegrah · 21/03/2020 19:15

A lot of supermarkets near me are suggesting that NHS staff can visit shop on particular days at particular times so giving you a better chance at getting some food. Also not great, but KFC are still open for takeaways....maybe others are too.

Shirls22 · 21/03/2020 19:23

We have set up a support group in our area for people like yourselves which was started on FB aimed at helping elderly, vulnerable and key support workers. Do you have anything like that in your area? Have a look on FB and you may have something locally. Good luck

ClaraSais · 21/03/2020 19:29

So sorry to hear this! I’ve just been out and couldn’t find eggs in the shop. I wish people would just stop bulk buying it breaks my heart. Really hope you find some food x

Holldstock1 · 21/03/2020 19:30

The Government need to get NHS and Care Agency staff designated personal shoppers/ click n collect. They need to be taken care of and supported as much as possible. Its sickening what's happening atm. People should be ashamed.

MyDcAreMarvel · 21/03/2020 19:31

Morrisons 7-8 am nhs staff only.

just got this email from M&s food stores WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER - HELPING OUR COMMUNITIES

In my last message, I made a promise to share more about what we’re doing to help our customers and our wider community. Today I’m sharing the initial steps that we’re taking to help the communities we serve; particularly its most vulnerable members. Many of the ideas we are putting into action come from the 80,000 colleagues who are working around the clock and I have never been prouder to lead this team - this family - and wear my M&S name badge.

IN OUR STORES:
We are reserving the first hour of trade every Monday and Thursday, as a special shopping hour for our more vulnerable and elderly customers to help them get the food and products they need. For our NHS and emergency service workers, who we will all be relying on in the coming weeks and months, we will reserve the first hour of trade on a Tuesday and Friday for them to shop.

To help make sure all of our customers can get what they need, we have introduced temporary purchasing restrictions on some lines. This isn’t a decision we have taken lightly, but there is unprecedented demand on some products and all of us need to play our part in feeding the nation. There is plenty of food for all of us, if we just buy what we need.

IN OUR COMMUNITIES
One of the things that makes me most proud to work at M&S is the role we play in our local communities. Not just through the brilliant service our colleagues give, but through the time and energy they give to helping those most in need. We can’t do this on our own and so we partner with organisations like Neighbourly, a community platform which links our stores to local organisations so we can donate surplus food and non-food products to the people who really need them.

Earlier this year we launched an app to make it easier for our colleagues to connect surplus product with the right local charity. Where we’ve launched it donations have gone up by more than 100% so we’re rolling it out as fast as we can to make it as easy as possible for everyone in all of our stores to get involved. We’re also playing our part in the work the government is convening with the whole food supply chain - from farm to fork - and when we can tell you more about that, we will.

But we know that isn’t enough. So M&S is kickstarting the ‘Neighbourly Community Fund’ specifically to support those most impacted by COVID-19. The whole M&S family - including M&S Bank and M&S Energy - is supporting the fund, which will help mobilise more than 1000 local charities to support the most vulnerable members of our communities immediately. Alongside this local on-the-ground funding M&S is supporting the National Emergencies Trust Campaign with a donation to help galvanize the national efforts now under way. To help you show your support for your local community, you can now select Neighbourly or the National Emergencies Trust as your chosen Sparks charity. This means M&S will continue to donate to these funds every time you use your Sparks card.

Forgottenwhatsleepis · 21/03/2020 21:18

Round our way theres been local Covid 19 help groups set up on facebook so people can ask others if they have anything spare, maybe try searching using just the word covid 19 east Midlands? Good luck OP, and thank you to you, your husband and colleagues for all the hard work you are doing, now and always 💐

balalalala · 21/03/2020 21:31

Have a look at Bidfood. They are a foodservice wholesaler that have just announced they will be doing a home delivery service. Claim to be able to do next day deliveries Monday to Friday.

Mistressofpemberly · 21/03/2020 21:36

I was in isolation for 7 days and live in midlands. I have been to multiple shops in the past few days and there was food in all of them. All of them had some stuff missing from the shelves but there was plenty of food, just less choice. I think you need to just pop in at different times of day.

Rachel709 · 21/03/2020 22:11

We have only managed to get things by going early. Some butchers, greengrocers / farm shops / veg boxes will deliver. Find a milkman. Yes I know this is more expensive. Search on FB for local groups set up to help with the crisis. The supermarkets have started rationing. Do you have family that can help.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 21/03/2020 22:17

I really hope you manage to get sorted, definitely recommend favebook to ask for help.

I also had a smile at birds at Christmas. Live a long way away now but I can remember queuing down the street at 7;30am Christmas Eve for a preordered pork pie (which no one ever ate) and cobs for my mum!

lastnightthemooncame · 21/03/2020 22:24

hello I'm a rare poster on here, but an offer of help, I have transport and in East Midlands, travelling to drop items in for other folk, family etc, between Derbyshire, Notts and Lincs?

Ellamar · 21/03/2020 23:47

You should be a priority not just being pregnant but as you both are NHS workers. I think Iceland,Lidl etc seem more full of stock but as for nappies, baby milk, calpol etc it is scary. I know some supermarket staff have phone apps that can check stock in supermarkets maybe someone on here can help. Someone said to also google farm shops in your area hopefully there will be one. Bless you and your hubby i can imagine how hard you are working now.

kasm · 22/03/2020 02:12

I don’t know if anyone has suggested “amazon Now”. They deliver from amazon or Morrison’s. Choose Morrison’s -I have had more success doing this. They open up delivery slots at exactly midnight. Fill your basket and go for an early in the day delivery slot....this is your best chance. If you get later deliveries there is less chance of getting everything. Postage is free over £40. So this week on Thursday night midnight I booked a 10-12 slot for sat (missed the earlier one through app crashing!!) but still got a good amount. Go for a good mix and accept substitutes.
Very best of luck xxx

Laurasamayoa · 22/03/2020 03:10

My husband went at 6 am when they just opened and managed to get a few things. This was a morrisons thou so not sure

sunnybean60 · 22/03/2020 05:26

I was in a similar situation to you. I didn't stock pile and I too got in a panic once I couldn't get a delivery slot. My suggestions.
Local milkman
Neighbours/colleagues - stick a note through their doors with your contact let them know you are running out of food now
All other suggestions above are good too and the government understands the situation too.
