Can’t get food ANYWHERE

GaaaaarlicBread · 20/03/2020 08:21

Husband and I don’t drive , my husband is however, currently having lessons and close to passing but that’ll be a couple of months away as his lessons have been cancelled .
Anyway besides the point, we have two supermarkets by us. An Aldi and a Tesco (Tesco is 40 min walk though and buses have been made less regular now). Neither store have any food, no exaggeration . I have been after work to aldi and husband has too (he finishes late so we thought they might have restocked but no).
We tried to order online last night- Ocado have suspended online shop as they have too many deliveries- Tesco, Asda, Morrison’s, Iceland and Co-op have zero slots until end of April. What do we do? Seriously? We have frozen bits from our last shop but nothing to last us more than a week.
I’m pregnant , so being extra cautious about going out other than work, my husband works shifts and we literally can’t get anything . We have loo roll , shampoo you know normal toiletries but food we have a bit of milk left , and a few tinned things and cous cous etc. A few people on here might say ‘why have you left it until you have nothing’ but we have been trying and trying and it’s getting worse because people are selfish and bulk buy unnecessarily. We both work for the nhs so work long days and this is just ridiculous .
We ended up buying nappies etc for baby even though I’m not quite half way through the pregnancy yet but every single shop is out of baby essentials too so we thought sod it we will get some in case it’s still like this in 4 or so months time.

Any ideas what we can do? Please be kind .

@BritWifeinUSA It would appear in the UK is full of selfish twats and thick ones at that. It really is an embarrassment.

unchienandalusia · 21/03/2020 09:32

Definitely get on Facebook. Lots of groups have been set up to support the local community and many farm shops cafes and restaurants are posting on them offering food deliveries. It's a shit situation but you have to be resourceful. Digital is your friend here. Good luck!

GeorgieSparks · 21/03/2020 13:52

Not too sure why people are gloating they stockpiled for Brexit, as you didn’t need it then, did you? Therefore, it was unnecessary and probably why people laughed at you.
You had no way of knowing this virus would hit us all!
Sorry you are struggling OP. Enjoy your pizza and try as many local farm shops as possible.

Standrewsschool · 21/03/2020 14:56

I think Brexit boxes were laughed at because non-preppers thought that preppers were being over the top, and didn’t think that food shortages would occur. There’s been lots of preppier threads on mn giving advice as to what to buy over the last year etc, so it’s not a new phenomenon. Lots of the food would have been purchased gradually over the last year, so probably not resulting in the recent food shortages.

@GaaaaarlicBread hope you are ok and managed to get some groceries

TrafficHater · 21/03/2020 15:03

Hi OP,

I'm in Nottingham. You can have some of my food/water for free. I can deliver them and leave them outside so you don't need to have any face to face contact.

No online delivery slots for how long?

How will the disabled and vulnerable cope?

My mother is physically disabled and relies on online shopping. This is terrible

maxbabi · 21/03/2020 15:10

I'm disabled, no car and self isolating. Lucky to be able to book asda online has I have relied on them due to disability But there is very little option good wise. No loo roll, tins, flour, lentils, frozen chips for example. I will be OK for a couple of weeks but what then?
I am having moments of panic about it all. Also self employed and about to lose my job. Life is tricky.
On the plus side I have a great street WhatsApp group, local group and friends. But I still feel vulnerable.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 15:41

Brexit boxes were laughed at because they were brexit boxes. No with iq over room temperature laughs at people with normal stocked up pantry and few extra bits there and there. However, people were talking about tins in a wardrobe and under the beds because of brexit and that was really weird and ott...

Husband left early this morn to the shop, managed to get a decent lot of food to last us a week of packed lunch and tea so thank you for the tips everyone , leaving early seems to be the thing to do although not ideal after night shift bless him, but he didn’t want me to go

OP posts:
BritWifeinUSA · 21/03/2020 16:11

He should get into the habit of going on the way home from a night shift. Even if he only manages to get a few items each day.

GaaaaarlicBread · 21/03/2020 16:14

@BritWifeinUSA he did he went straight from work

WHY is this happening in the UK? I can’t understand it. I’m in Ireland- we had one and one only day of madness and everything is normal again now.
I’m really sorry OP, if I lived near you I’d go shopping for you. Medical staff should get priority along with older/vulnerable people

MrsKingfisher · 21/03/2020 16:23

your local FB pages might help, deliveries such as Hello Fresh so all your ingredients for meals are in the box. Where we are local farm shops and small retailers are now delivering. I hope you find something soon op.

GaaaaarlicBread · 21/03/2020 16:34

@CilantroChili thank you so much. I can’t put into words how crazy it is. And because of my medical condition I’m not allowed to drive , it makes things so much more difficult . I feel for people who have young children too because we are stressed just the two of us with baby on the way . I’m so grateful for all the kind words and advise thank you

Our local Foodbank has been given fresh food from local restaurants and is offering out to anyone who needs it ,don't need a referral at the moment. if you have one close by they might possibly be doing the same?

tiggerkid · 21/03/2020 17:44

People are acting like we have reached the end of the world but if you get up early, you can get at least some food in most supermarkets. A queue of 60 people isn't a massive one: it's less than a handful of people per isle in most supermarkets!

tiggerkid · 21/03/2020 17:46

How will the disabled and vulnerable cope?

This is the group I feel the most sorry for. I have an elderly neighbour in his 80s. We dropped off some eggs, soups, milk and bread for him yesterday and another one of our neighbours is making him some food too but he can't drive anymore. Getting taxis to go to empty shops can end up costly and pointless. Plus this group of people is advised not to go out anyway. People really ought to stop being so selfish. Shop responsibly. Buy only what you need.

Nimmykins · 21/03/2020 18:09

In my area we have a street, neighbourhood and wider area WhatsApp after leafleting and through a town-wide Facebook group.

Through this we are sharing alternative solutions. Through this I discovered a commercial baker is selling direct to the public as the restaurant trade dried up. Two street markets are doing veg boxes and so on.

Network with your neighbours. There’ll be something to help.

Sorry you’re struggling and I hope you find a solution..

user1476277375 · 21/03/2020 18:12

Can anyone with a car help you? Have you tried little corner shops? We're in London and even our corner shops still has a fair few bits. So sorry to hear this.

Jonas14 · 21/03/2020 18:16

Saw someone posted a picture of her saving of 82p on Ocado. She was moaning as she had spent over £8k!!!! What is it with people. I feel so grateful that we live in the sticks and I have half a sack of rice and half a sack of porridge oats and lots of tins. No toilet paper though or milk. Grrr.

tierdytierd · 21/03/2020 18:22

Can you do a click and collect? Get a cab there or back at least? Round by me the neighbours/local community have pushed notes through doors with tel numbers so you can call and they’ll help collect things and drop them off for you, local church maybe able to help, it’s rubbish we’ve been to 4 supermarkets today and just about managed to grab some essentials. It’s so frustrating people are needlessly buying everything up, with no consideration for people who don’t have the luxury of time, oodles of cash and apparently live in warehouses to store it all. Hope you manage to get something sorted x.

EndlessUserName · 21/03/2020 18:23

Why are you working if you're pregnant???

Gabby61 · 21/03/2020 18:24
