Can’t get food ANYWHERE

GaaaaarlicBread · 20/03/2020 08:21

Husband and I don’t drive , my husband is however, currently having lessons and close to passing but that’ll be a couple of months away as his lessons have been cancelled .
Anyway besides the point, we have two supermarkets by us. An Aldi and a Tesco (Tesco is 40 min walk though and buses have been made less regular now). Neither store have any food, no exaggeration . I have been after work to aldi and husband has too (he finishes late so we thought they might have restocked but no).
We tried to order online last night- Ocado have suspended online shop as they have too many deliveries- Tesco, Asda, Morrison’s, Iceland and Co-op have zero slots until end of April. What do we do? Seriously? We have frozen bits from our last shop but nothing to last us more than a week.
I’m pregnant , so being extra cautious about going out other than work, my husband works shifts and we literally can’t get anything . We have loo roll , shampoo you know normal toiletries but food we have a bit of milk left , and a few tinned things and cous cous etc. A few people on here might say ‘why have you left it until you have nothing’ but we have been trying and trying and it’s getting worse because people are selfish and bulk buy unnecessarily. We both work for the nhs so work long days and this is just ridiculous .
We ended up buying nappies etc for baby even though I’m not quite half way through the pregnancy yet but every single shop is out of baby essentials too so we thought sod it we will get some in case it’s still like this in 4 or so months time.

Any ideas what we can do? Please be kind .

People laughed at my ‘Brexit box’ now renamed ‘corona box’ it has loo rolls, tins, painkillers, jars, packets, sanitary towels. I gathered these all back last summer and filled the freezer after Christmas when food was on sale...

BMW6 · 20/03/2020 16:23

DH went to local Tesco garage shop at lunchtime and came back with bread, milk, veg as needed.

violetgrey · 20/03/2020 16:24

What’s your point and how is it of any help to the OP Likethebattle?

fishonabicycle · 20/03/2020 16:25

OP I've just seen that our Tesco is doing an NHS hour? See if yours is too. Good luck x

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 20/03/2020 16:28

@Likethebattle good for you. You can add modest to your list of attributes.

waltzingparrot · 20/03/2020 16:31

Not RTFT but have you any cafes near by. My DS works at a cafe that has no customers so is helping out the local community by getting their suppliers to send more food that they can deliver round to locals. Can you suggest they do that. It's just basics, eggs, bacon,, bread, milk, etc but really useful. Or the local pub. Helps them out to.

Hingeandbracket · 20/03/2020 16:34

@Likethebattle Can the OP buy some of your stash then? Or are you just gloating?

WaxOnFeckOff · 20/03/2020 16:40

NHS hour no use to us even though DH is NHS. I'm out of quarantine tomorrow but he has another week to go. I'd managed to get a click and collect for Monday from Tesco but half of my very ordinary shop is unavailable with no substitute. I'm going to have to get up at crack of dawn tomorrow and see what is available given none of us has been allowed out for the last week.

People are basically arseholes. Everyone should have been able to get enough for a normal shop plus some extras to last in case they got shut in for a week. The shortages are going to end up causing people who aren't supposed to be out, having to go out, just to try to get stuff to feed themselves.

GaaaaarlicBread · 20/03/2020 16:42

@MotherofPoodles about 30 mins from Ashby, close to Derby (in a town by derby).

A few people mentioned Hello Fresh, we subscribed to them for two meals a week and they’ve been cancelled due to shortages of ingredients :(

@Likethebattle well good for you I hope you enjoy every ounce of food you have . I’m going to enjoy the nhs free pizza deal today with my husband before we tackle this challenge of no food using the actual good advise off MN posters here who aren’t boasting over their big stash of food. 😝

Asda is allowing people from the vulnerable list to shop for an hour in the morning before other customers. On some days. Check out the website. As you are pregnant you are in this category. Then you can stock up after overnight deliveries. Good luck

Olawisk · 20/03/2020 16:48

Your have to get out of bed first thing like everyone else if you want some decent food.

Emmmie · 20/03/2020 17:03

Some businesses are adapting. A manufacturer typically selling hummus through Costco and Ocado is now delivering hummus and falafel packages right to customer’s door. I saw their post on Facebook. If this interests you can check them out.

Kerry's Fresh deliver to Derby. They sell fruit and veg but also milk, juice, bread, honey etc.

We had a fruit and veg box delivery yesterday and it's delicious.

EwwSprouts · 20/03/2020 22:18

Have heard Aldi are going to give more shelves to food & fewer to alcohol. Makes sense if people are going to buy a bit more food if no school lunches, no lunches at work, no meals out.

HappyHammy · 20/03/2020 22:27

Lots of companies are doing NHS deals. McDonalds Pret Dominoes. Free drinks and at least 50% off anything else.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2020 22:42

Why is this happening ?
The country can't actually be short of food

I live in Germany
Our Corona cases started earlier, we're on lockdown now,
everything closed except pharmacies & grocery shops - which have the usual goods

.. except hardly any bloody loo rolls of course, no sanitiser or gloves
and pasta is limited in some places

but everything else is normal

Shops are more quiet than usual, if anything, as people are just going in once a week and not lingering

Justaboy · 20/03/2020 23:48

DD3 is applying for a temp food delivery job, you all better watch out as that van hurtles around the town;)

You have bene warned!!

CSIblonde · 21/03/2020 02:13

Try corner shops first thing. Mine sells everything & isn't out of anything: & its getting stock deliveries daily. Basics prices on par with Asda. I went at 6.45am & by 7 it was getting massively busy.

Truckman · 21/03/2020 02:59

I haven't stocked up at all.

I usually have Huel in the morn and sometimes at night mixed with porridge - have a good few weeks worth in cupboard. For lunch I usually grab something on the go (I'm still working and doesn't look set to change).

I stopped at two service stations today and both had a fair bit of food.

PotholeParadise · 21/03/2020 03:52

Have you joined your local town facebook group?

Various tiny firms and independant shops (butchers, grocery wholsalers and so on) across the country are making hay while the sun shines by branching out into home delivery of foodboxes. They advertise on social media.

BritWifeinUSA · 21/03/2020 05:07

I’m completely shocked by all these pictures of empty supermarkets in the UK that I keep seeing online. My mum is an NHS nurse still working full- time at 65. She retires later this year. She lives alone and works 13-hour shifts. She went to a 24-hour Tesco on the way home and the shelves were bare. She sent me pictures. I’ve never seen anything like it. We are on a lockdown here and apart from paper products the supermarket shelves are at their normal levels. What is happening over there? I went online to try and order groceries for my mum but no slots for 4 weeks. She went to the post office and they had some canned goods available so she bought some soups and canned vegetables but a nurse needs to be eating better than that.

Lots of restaurants and cafes are switching their business model to sell take away food or boxes of fresh food. Also, wholesale markets are selling boxed food for delivery. Imagine your area also has a mutual aid WhatsApp or Facebook group who will be able to help you.

You also realise you are contributing to the problem by panic buying nappies when you are still 4 months off having your baby? This forum is full of people saying they’re struggling to buy formula and nappies for their babies. I suggest you offer them to someone who actually needs them.

dentydown · 21/03/2020 06:13

@Likethebattle I had a brexit cupboard that everyone laughed at too. Everyone now is grateful for it. I would be shafted without it.

Skigal86 · 21/03/2020 06:23

It doesn’t help with any other food supplies, but this company are doing meat packs and will deliver: m.facebook.com/PriceAndFretwell/photos/a.1037279609756687/1754631191354855/?type=3&source=48
