To be disgusted in my employer?

I work for a very large pub company.
They have not closed their venues.

In fact they are keeping ALL of their many hundreds fo pubs, bars and NIGHTCLUBS open.

Don't believe me Facebook search your local Popworld.

Nobody is allowed to post a lot on social media.

Even fucking better now is that managers who are short on staff have to communicate with others in their area to lend and swap bar staff. So travel around and work in different venues.

Also Guinness and Ale is on sale 👍

I have friends, family and colleagues who work in these venues and I am now terrified.

They just don't give a flying fuck. What is it going to take for them to stop endangering people.

And don't have any faith in the great British public. They are absolutely going out. Even to our nightclubs.

And these people are not the most naturally sanitary. And some are still working.

They will be forced to close soon Angry

PlainBritishFlour · 19/03/2020 13:31

I watch the news obsessively but I honestly have no faith. By then it could be to late.
Some colleagues have already come down with symptoms.

This is the government’s fault as they haven’t enforced anything to prevent businesses from claiming on insurance.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 19/03/2020 13:35

this is exactly why we need a strong lock down from the government. People still don't take anything seriously.

Mumdiva99 · 19/03/2020 13:35

They may be desperately worried but until the government forces closure they can claim on business continuity insurance. If they can't claim they may lose their business. By not forcing closures the government has signed the death warrant for many many small businesses and arts associations. Giving them loans doesn't sort the problem out. So maybe talk to your friend. Offer support. Empathise...they might have lots of staff relying on them to give a paycheck which feeds and clothes the family.

Unreasonablyextravagant · 19/03/2020 13:41

I feel for the business owners here. Speaking from experience, if they shut their doors voluntarily they will likely be looking at mass redundancies & a very slim possibility of reopening in the future.

Save your anger for our typically ineffective government who are not doing nearly enough for those stuck between a rock & a hard place.

It’s cost prohibitive for most to be a moral crusader.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 19/03/2020 13:41

I imagine OP that the majority of staff are on zero hour contracts so to avoid mass lay offs they are trying to keep venues open and staff paid......what would you rather?! I think businesses are damned If they do and damned If they don't

PlainBritishFlour · 19/03/2020 13:42

I have plenty of anger for both.

They have hundreds of venues. If they needed to be proactive they could've kept their food venues open and pushed social distancing at least.

There is no justification for keeping a nightclub open and wanting people to attend.

Nope. They have negotiated with insurance providers that any business who would be eligible to claim on their insurance can do as if they have been ordered to close. Unfortunately, hardly any insurance policies cover them anyway, so it makes little difference.

AlohaMolly · 19/03/2020 13:45

I’m on both sides of the fence for this one.

I work for two tourism businesses - accommodation.

I honestly believe in social distancing and practising it with my family - just work and exercise, but both the businesses are still open, because he’s got staff to support. If he closes, I’ve got no income. He feels bad for his staff, a fair few of whom don’t have any money other than their weekly wages and this is coming off the back of a really bad winter.

He knows he’ll have to close af some point, but until he’s forced to, he can’t claim on the insurance and even then, he’s sentencing a lot of us to poverty, no bills being paid etc.

cjt110 · 19/03/2020 13:47

Toby Carvery were advertising on FB the other day with words to the effect of "If you're still coming out, come here! We are making sure our staff and customers are kept safe" I was so so fucking angry to say the demographic are usually elderly and families!

EmeraldShamrock · 19/03/2020 13:50

Most retail stores are still open sticking to the government guidelines of safe distance. I understand and appreciate the need and challenges for grocery stores but not fashion outlets.
Lots of cut price fashion items encouraging socialising. They can't close without the government go ahead, they are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

MamaGee09 · 19/03/2020 13:53

They aren’t the the one all our local pubs whether small independent or part of chains such as weather spoon salt aNd greene King are still open and busy.

However the majority of staff in these places work minimal hours due to being students and don’t even earn enough money to claim ssp !

AlternativePerspective · 19/03/2020 13:54

This is the government’s fault as they haven’t enforced anything to prevent businesses from claiming on insurance. Most businesses don’t have the right kind of insurance anyway.

At the end of the day, closing businesses means that many of them will go under. And given we’re not in a state of lockdown at the moment, being angry with a business who is refusing to close and put its staff out of work is unreasonable. If you feel you shouldn’t be going to nightclubs, then don’t.

Lindy2 · 19/03/2020 14:01

Our local leisure centre is actively encouraging people to use their gym stating "you definitely can't catch the virus through sweat."

Isn't it amazing that they have such accurate medical knowledge on Coronavirus when so many actual experts are not sure what it can and can't do.

I've cancelled my membership and told them that I'm horrified at what they are saying. They are still running swimming lessons and a soft play area too.

Sonichu · 19/03/2020 14:06

This. Unfortunately coronavirus doesn't mean that people still don't have bills to pay.

Kazzyhoward · 19/03/2020 14:06

No, Boris said yesterday that they'd arranged with the insurance firms to pay out on business interruption insurance. Problem is, too many businesses didn't bother covering themselves with the right insurance!

SerendipitySunshine · 19/03/2020 14:14

My local council leisure centre wont let me pause my membership and is refusing to close as they want to keep taking money.

AvonBarksdale99 · 19/03/2020 14:17

If it’s unequivocally awful and disastrous for anyone at all to go to any kind of pub, club, restaurant or gym why didn’t the government just order them closed - as they have done schools, and as other countries government has done? Something doesn’t add up.

DanglySpider · 19/03/2020 14:19

So people were supposed to predict that their business would go under from a virus, @Kazzyhoward ?

Shinesweetfreedom · 19/03/2020 14:20

I think the leisure industry has a bloody check to be carrying on and whining about how their industry will be affected.Everything and everyone is affected.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 19/03/2020 14:21

YANBU OP. I would be disgusted too.
I see that a fair few people on here still believe the myth that these businesses can only get insurance payouts if forced to close.

Glad to see several posts clearly explaining that it is not true.

RasberryRoyale · 19/03/2020 14:29

That’s awful. My Cousin is still working. He works in the offices for a large infrastructure company but apparently he can’t work from home. Large office. He has a baby who was premature at home and an under lying health condition.
Some employers are just awful.

Merrymumoftwo · 19/03/2020 14:32

The sad thing is they don’t want to lock down due to need for NHS and other emergency workers getting in to work but because of behaviour like this that’s exactly where we will head. What happens then?

Inkpaperstars · 19/03/2020 14:34

I think the govt should enforce closure, but whether they do or not they have given advice that these things should not be happening, and that it is crucial people comply.

I would take photos, screenshots, notes etc so we can remember exactly which businesses were busy creating the cases of a week or two from now.
