To think TV remote signals won't pass through MDF?

I'm looking for a new TV stand. Some of them seem to be made of MDF, with no window at the front, e.g. this one. We have a Virgin Tivo box and a PS4, both of which are operated by a TV remote. Am I right in thinking the signal won't pass through the door, so we would have to keep it open when they are in use?

(You would think this sort of info would be on the retailer's website, but unfortunately not).

Your PS4 will work as that uses Bluetooth, not infrared. I don't have virgin, but I'd be surprised if it would work

YeahWhatevver · 17/03/2020 20:15

Virgin and your TV will be IR and won't work

YeahWhatevver · 17/03/2020 20:15

Shame coz it's really nice

ThePants999 · 17/03/2020 20:16

Correct. The signal from a remote like the one for the Virgin box is basically light, so if you can't see the box, you can't control it. There are devices that will sit outside detecting signals and rebroadcast them inside the unit.

I would buy one where the shelves are open if I were you

Sky works through Bluetooth

Just cover you TiVo box with a bit of wood and then try and change the channel

ManlyMenAreWe · 17/03/2020 20:47

You can get a little cable with a tiny cube thing on the end that you can plug into tv etc and stuck the cube bit out under the tv. It receives the signal from the remote. We had one for ages, it was fine. Until the cleaner kept tucking it away!

This wasn't our model, but this sort of thing www.amazon.co.uk/ELEGIANT-Infrared-Receiver-Extender-Repeater-Black/dp/B017XOU6RM?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Ikea have frosted glass doors which work with remotes. Looks very similar to the one in your picture.
From memory it's a besta and you can pretty much design it yourself.

Sky works through Bluetooth

My Sky Q box is definitely being controlled by infra-red. I don't know if it bluetooth is an additional option.

Purpleartichoke · 18/03/2020 03:26

Some are infrared and require line of sight. Some are rf or Bluetooth and will go through walls.

TiggerOfThigh · 18/03/2020 03:29

TiVo boxes now don’t need to be pointed at the box to work.
I have mine in a drawer.

BruceAndNosh · 18/03/2020 03:30

We have a Virgin TiVo box, it's the V6 one installed November 2019.
It works fine hidden inside a wooden tv unit.

Lidon · 18/03/2020 07:42

The v6 remote is dual signal, but it needs to be setup properly. My v6 remote will work through brickwork.
