Put this here for traffic, hope that is ok..

I just moved into a flat recently and am wanting to get the carpets sorted out. I have had about 8 different carpet fitters out to measure up etc but all have said the same thing.. They will not put carpets on my stairs as they are classed as safety stairs, they all said its because they have the black strip on them. Never heard of anyone not being allowed carpets on their stairs and I wouldn't have taken the flat if I had known. Have another guy coming out tonight but have a feeling he will say the same.

What can I do with the stairs if I can't have a carpet on them? (I am not allowed wooden flooring) so I am feeling very limited in what I can do here? Since taking the picture I have cleaned them all up but they just remind me of the stairs in my old school or a hospital..

Maybe carpet tiles? Still not exactly luxurious but slightly better than bare stairs

Glassio · 17/03/2020 16:40

Are you renting? get the landlord to write approval that they can be covered.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 17/03/2020 16:44

Can you paint them?

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 17/03/2020 16:44

If you are renting you should talk to the landlord. The carpet fiier may be able to fit individual strips up to the safety strips

Fluffybutter · 17/03/2020 17:33

Ah .. these are used in sheltered housing in communal stairwells .
It’s Lino isn’t it? Yeah , can’t paint that but could possibly try and pull the lino off and put different stuff down so they’re atleast clean

Aknifewith16blades · 17/03/2020 18:06

Some great funky lino choices here (but not cheap) www.atrafloor.com/vinyl-flooring/pattern-vinyl-flooring/

NoMoreDickheads · 17/03/2020 19:21

Floor paint?

CSIblonde · 17/03/2020 19:30

You can buy stick on carpet stair treads but they look messy. We had those stairs in last place, they were carpeted up to the edging strip for noise reduction.

Hoppinggreen · 17/03/2020 19:32

Carpet tiles?

TheSheepofWallSt · 17/03/2020 19:33

Are you in a position to buy the carpet and get a mate to help you fit it?

Walkerbean16 · 17/03/2020 19:40

If its a flat are they communal stairs?

And why waste another tradesmans time if 8 have already told you the same thing!

SciFiScream · 17/03/2020 19:51

If it's a flat...are those stairs outside your flat? They won't belong to you!

They look like stairs that are communal and so shared with others and of course you can't carpet them.

SillyMoomin · 17/03/2020 19:53

As others have said - 1) Are you renting or have you bought this flat 2) where are the stairs?, outside your front door or actually inside your property?

duckduckgoosealbatross · 17/03/2020 19:55

They look like external stairs to me, do you own that space?

Redcherries · 17/03/2020 20:17

You can carpet tile them, the nosings just need to be a contrasting colour so it’s clear they are stairs. Commercial property or a domestic home? These rules only tend to be commercial?

motherheroic · 17/03/2020 20:23

.....are these OUTSIDE your flat? You have no business carpeting them if they are.

SebastienCrabSauce · 17/03/2020 20:30

I’m guessing she is in a maisonette type flat hence why she has stairs
