So I'm moving on Friday, and as I'm renting I don't have any white goods, and new house doesn't have fridge, freezer, washing machine. Saw that the BHF have 2nd hand ones. I haven't had time to visit yet - working full-time, sick child - but does anyone have any experience of buying 2nd hand. Am I silly to think of it. WWYD.

I've bought 2nd hand for a rental before - you'll be lucky if it doesn't have a little bit missing (eg a shelf) but other than that, it's fine - just give it a really good clean before using!!

I bought a second hand fridge freezer on eBay from a lady living nearby, cost us £50 and lasted the whole 6 years we lived in that rental. Might have lasted longer if we'd not moved.

I believe they safety test their white goods. Def go for it op.

We got a second hand freezer from BHF, it came with a6 month guarantee, still going strong.

There’s no reason at all not to. Environmentally friendly too.

Since all my new appliances started crapping out within a few weeks of the guarantee expiring I’ve bought nothing but second hand large appliances. Washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge and freezer are all second hand now and lasting much longer than the three brand new washing machines I bought in row which lasted just over 2 year’s each maximum. I bought my current washing machine for £50 5 years ago and it’s still going strong. I’ll never go back!

There doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with it being second hand. I gave a freezer to charity purely because I moved and had nowhere to put it in the new house.

pooopypants · 16/03/2020 11:56

As long as you give it a clean, crack on OP. My second freezer is second hand and although I shouldn't tempt fate, it's still going strong

I really wouldn’t. I bought a second hand fridge freezer from the BHF and it was an absolute nightmare. I bought it a few days before Christmas, bought the usual Christmas food and shoved it all in the fridge. Next morning everything in the fridge was frozen solid. The temperature gauge was broken so the fridge was just getting colder and colder instead of maintaining the temperature. It had got past the 24 hour test period because the fault was only apparent when it had been on for a few days.
They were a nightmare to deal with afterwards. Didn’t want to refund the £25 delivery charge just the cost of the fridge. Managed to get them to agree, they picked the fridge up and when I phoned to tell them I was coming in that day to receive my refund they said I could only have it if they had made any money that day. ‘There needed to be money in the till in order to refund me’.
Moral of the story is go to Curry’s (other fridge freezer retailers will do) it’s not worth the hassle.

I've always bought second hand white goods and been fine. We got a washer, fridge and cooker for £200 all delivered from a man on gumtree. All still going now 4 years later.

Sh05 · 16/03/2020 12:59

BHF have to uphold safety and standards of quality on all second hand white goods so I would go for it.
Recently I wanted to donate a small fridge freezer that my parents were replacing for a bigger one and the BHF collection men checked it over pretty thoroughly before they agreed to load it into their van. They said there would be even more checks before it would be sold on as well

HappyAsASandboy · 16/03/2020 13:18

I bought a second hand full height fridge for £50 to chill wedding wine 10 years ago, and we're still using it now! It's been our main fridge for 8 years Smile

Got mine from Facebook market place, £40 for an Argos basics under counter fridge and freezer which was meant to be temporary. 18months later still going strong!
