To take my child out with chicken pox?

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 08:27

Before I get torn apart I absolutely 100% agree that children with chicken pox should be kept at home until all scabs are healed over and no longer contagious - however I have no food in the house, nobody to go and get it for me, nobody to watch my poorly child and no online delivery slots available until the 26th of March thanks to incredibly selfish panic buyers. I am now starting to worry that we have no food and unless I join what seems to be the ever growing population of idiotic, selfish, and frankly quite stupid people then we will starve.

Please has anyone got any other suggestions for me? Because The thought of taking a miserable, highly contagious child out shopping does not appeal to me under normal circumstances let alone in the current climate....but then again the thought of us all starving isn't too appealing either Angry.

Can you post on a local group and ask if anyone would be willing to get what you need?

user1483387154 · 16/03/2020 08:28

could you ask one of your neighbours?

GA2012 · 16/03/2020 08:34

Chicken pox is contagious before the spots so it’s likely that your child passed them on already. I think taking them out will be frowned upon though. When DS had them I kept him in but mil picked him up to take him McDonald’s.. I assumed drive thru under the circumstances but she took him inside!! I wouldn’t have been best impressed if someone was eating in there with them myself.

It’s 8.30 now. If I was desperate to go to the shop I would have gone really early like 7am if possible. Could you go early tomorrow?

People are so willing to help out others at the minute. Could you ask for help
On Facebook?

You do have my sympathy though! Hope you get it sorted!

ThinkPinkStink · 16/03/2020 08:37

Is the child small enough to be bundled into a buggy with the rain cover on?

Bottom line. If you nip in and out of a shop at a quiet time, not using any public transport, he probably won't pass it on to anyone.

But I'd you can avoid it, either by getting someone else to help or bundling him into a buggy and covering him over, that'd be better.

Normally I'd say to do an online shop, but that's not really a tenable short term solution with the situation as it is right now.

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 08:40

I don't know my neighbours well enough to ask we haven't lived here very long, I will have a look for a local group to see if anyone could help but I'm not sure I'd have much luck.

There are loads of social media groups popping up at the moment offering to drop off groceries for people/ some of our local shops are even delivering. I know it’s for Coronavirus but I’m sure someone would help if you reached out on one of those groups.

randomsabreuse · 16/03/2020 08:42

Do you have a car? Click and collect would be fine. Or agree about buggy with rain cover.

Or post on local FB

MadamHattie · 16/03/2020 08:42

Not everyone's favourite but do you have an Icelands near you that delivers? It's the only food shop I've found that still has next day deliveries so might be worth trying

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 08:42

And my daughter is 4, I would literally be going to the corner shop 5 minutes away with her on the buggy board (I have a 9 month old who will no doubt have caught it too 😫) I would much rather avoid taking them out until I know they're both ok.

I would do a post on social media along the lines of “x has chicken pox and we need some shopping. Could I ask a massive favour and if transfer the money over could someone pick up a few bits for us”

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 08:44

I don't drive, I will have a look at Icelands to see if they have a slot available, I don't mind what food we have as long as we have something.

Any chance you have a sling for the baby, and put 4year old in the buggy?

Hillocrew · 16/03/2020 08:52

Can you phone your local shop and order few bits , pay with your card and then order a taxi to collect them for you?

WTFdidwedo · 16/03/2020 08:53

This is probably a better time than normal to take chicken pox children out I would think, given that people concerned about their health would be less likely to go out than usual at the moment surely? I'd just make sure she had as little skin as possible showing, so gloves and scarf covering most of their face, and go to the shop.

Mine has chicken pox at the moment and I had a massive problem getting Calpol this weekend because people are fuckwits and have bought it all, and obviously Nurofen is a no no for chicken pox. I was furious on Saturday.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 16/03/2020 08:56

no online delivery slots available until the 26th of March thanks to incredibly selfish panic buyers

I don’t think it’s fair to suggest that people booking for home deliveries are either selfish, nor panic buying!
We’ve encouraged my MIL to do her first online shop.

Do you have a dad on the scene, maybe he could bring his children some shopping? Could you ask a neighbour if they’d watch the children for thirty minutes when they are asleep? I know you say you don’t know your neighbours yet, but this is the perfect time to get to know them. Please don’t take your contagious and poorly children out. That is the real definition of “incredibly selfish”

Tinkletwat · 16/03/2020 08:58

I'm sure your neighbours would understand if you asked for help. Having neighbours that look out for each other is invaluable - maybe you will be able to do something in return at some point.

CruCru · 16/03/2020 08:59

If you live in Islington, I will be glad to get you what you need. PM me if you do.

HonestlyItsFine · 16/03/2020 08:59

Milk and more (milkman service) do pantry deliveries of basics. You can check and see if they are in your area?

Cremebrule · 16/03/2020 08:59

Can you go to a petrol station? There should be food and you can leave the child in the car.

HonestlyItsFine · 16/03/2020 09:01

Or post what (general) area you in and someone may be able to point you in the right direction?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 16/03/2020 09:02

Amazon pantry?

Cremebrule · 16/03/2020 09:03

Sorry missed you can’t drive. That was a very useless suggestion I made.

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 09:06

The fact that if people were shopping as normal and only as much as needed there would be delivery slots available before the 26th march, it's worse than Christmas. There are no food shortages, or shortages of essentials in any of the countries that are affected far worse than us at the moment. I do think it is mostly selfish, panic buying that has caused this issue. I have family (living hours away from me so I can't actually help them) who rely on online shopping for there weekly food all year round and I'm petrified of how they're going to cope.

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut has solved it! Of course, Amazon pantry, slough you’re out of luck if you need loo rolls, £75-95 on there in Saturday night. We couldn’t get any on Saturday in our usual shop. We went back at opening time on Sunday.

OhLook · 16/03/2020 09:07

My Facebook feed is full of people on local groups offering help with shopping at the moment.
