To take my child out with chicken pox?

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 08:27

Before I get torn apart I absolutely 100% agree that children with chicken pox should be kept at home until all scabs are healed over and no longer contagious - however I have no food in the house, nobody to go and get it for me, nobody to watch my poorly child and no online delivery slots available until the 26th of March thanks to incredibly selfish panic buyers. I am now starting to worry that we have no food and unless I join what seems to be the ever growing population of idiotic, selfish, and frankly quite stupid people then we will starve.

Please has anyone got any other suggestions for me? Because The thought of taking a miserable, highly contagious child out shopping does not appeal to me under normal circumstances let alone in the current climate....but then again the thought of us all starving isn't too appealing either Angry.

My 3 year old had chicken pox a few weeks ago, I thought my 8 month old was going to avoid them, but after she got better he got them(of course)

Never realized how contagious they are .. we passed them on to every child we were in a room with - and that was before the spots had even started.

I'd do everything you can to avoid going out. My 8 month olds became infected and he was extremely ill.

Where are you based?

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 09:11

And my partner is away for a few days on a job so he can't get the food to unfortunately, I absolutely do not want to put anybody's health at risk - I have said this multiple times but if I can't get someone to help me (and I am trying) then if it does come between feeding my children or taking them out for literally 10 minutes then I know what I'm going to choose and yes that does make me selfish but I think 99% of parents would be in that situation.

Or order a takeaway

crispysausagerolls · 16/03/2020 10:31

I know this isn’t the point of the thread but I don’t understand why people don’t get the chicken pox vaccination

HonestlyItsFine · 16/03/2020 10:33

crispysausagerolls probably because it's not part of the childhood vaccination scheme.
Probably a lot of people don't even realise you can get the vaccine.

CruCru · 16/03/2020 10:36

I planned to get the vaccination for my children once they were both over one (they wouldn’t do it before then). Unfortunately my oldest child brought it home from nursery and gave it to my youngest (who was five months at the time).

Wolfiefan · 16/03/2020 10:36

Hope your child recovers quickly OP. Glad you have a solution.

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 12:47

@crispysausagerolls it isn't part of the routine vaccine schedule, so you can only get it on the NHS if you come under a certain criteria which my children don't, and I haven't had a spare £400 to get them vaccinated. In all fairness chicken pox is a very mild childhood illness for most children (obviously I know some can become very, very poorly) so it hasn't felt necessary.

Thank you again for all your suggestions, Iceland had a delivery slot for Friday and I've now got enough to last us until then 😊

OP posts:
Isthistrueor · 16/03/2020 13:33

@crispysausagerolls because it costs a lot of money maybe? Not difficult to understand really and CP is a mild illness for most anyway like coronavirus.

Glad you have found someone to help you out. It is a total shit storm atm, we can’t get an online delivery for a fortnight either.

randomsabreuse · 16/03/2020 14:10

I missed the boat on getting mine vaccinated... was just waiting to get 15 month old through his standard 1 year old vaccs before booking them both in when 4 year old brought it home to the pair of them! Had enough fun getting them both through the standard lot with temperatures popping up on the day of the vaccination a fair few times that I was planning it for the middle of the summer holidays!

crispysausagerolls · 16/03/2020 14:44

It costs 50£ at a lot of places I think. Thats hardly extortionate! Lots of people spend double that in a month on a sky subscription

HonestlyItsFine · 16/03/2020 14:55

£50 is a lot for a lot of people.
By the time someone has saved £2 a week for 25 weeks, their child may already have had chickenpox.
If measles etc jabs weren't free, lots of parents wouldn't be able to afford them either.

dementedpixie · 16/03/2020 15:02

You need 2 injections for chickenpox so it's not just £50. Plus if you have multiple children it adds up to even more

CinderellasSecrets · 16/03/2020 16:02

£50 is extortionate when you don't have a lot of money, when your struggling to budget for food/rent/council tax/bills etc. £50 for a vaccine against what is essentially a very mild - if inconvenient - is not feasible. And it isn't just 1 injection it's 2 injections, and when you have 2 children to pay for it all starts adding up. We don't have sky, or any TV subscription for that matter. As far as I can tell we aren't entitled to any help, but we don't earn much at all our income is just over £30,000 a year, and our rent is ridiculous (£850 for a 2 bed flat) and that's cheap for the area we're in. I shouldn't have to explain why my children don't have the chickenpox vaccine, it isn't a part of the NHS vaccine schedule, and £50 may not be much for you but for alot of people it is a weekly food shop.

OP posts:
randomsabreuse · 16/03/2020 16:06

The vaccination is definitely cheaper than 2 weeks off work - yet another reason why it is expensive to have limited "extra" funds. But with the best will in the world it can still sneak in before a vaccination is convenient as it's a live vaccine!

Ginseng1 · 16/03/2020 16:28

Lots of people are doing on line shops for first time not because of panic buying but because they are vulnerable (older / compromised immunity) & being sensible & staying at home! More people should do same if they do not need to go out.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 16/03/2020 16:40

As @HonestlyItsFine said, milk & more is brilliant - they do TONS of stuff, and usually deliver by seven in the morning. When I used to use it, you could amend your order up to 21:00 the night before, and there was no delivery charge, whether it was a pint of milk or three BIG bags of food shopping. More expensive than supermarkets, but a lifesaver if you can't get out to the shops.

CheshireChat · 16/03/2020 16:46

I really hope that people realise knowing your neighbours and being part of a community can be a good thing after all of this.

Not having a go at the OP at all, I could've easily been in her position a couple of months back even so I'm just wondering.

Flopjustwantscoffee · 16/03/2020 18:37

Where I am (not uk) there’s specific Facebook groups offering help for people self isolating from the Corona virus. There are way way more people posting offering help than people asking for help at the moment (tho that may change). I think because people are facing an unusual situation and in general feeling a bit helpless you may find many people are happy to help if there is something concrete they can do. So definately try posting...

Flopjustwantscoffee · 16/03/2020 18:38

And Cheshire Cat - I’m hoping that’s one positive thing that will come out of all this

Leaannb · 16/03/2020 19:14

@Honestlyitsfine Its still not a part of your vaccination schedule? My neighbors thought I was insane when I had my 2nd oldest vaccinated for it on base. Its been a part of vaccine schedule for over 25 years

Healthyandhappy · 16/03/2020 19:20

We went to the park and families house xx

BeNiceToYourSister · 16/03/2020 19:21

I shouldn't have to explain why my children don't have the chickenpox vaccine, it isn't a part of the NHS vaccine schedule

^ This! Hardly relevant to OP’s current predicament as it’s too late now Confused

Glad you’ve found a possible solution OP. It’s a shitty situation to be in. Flowers
