To worry that I keep forgetting how old I am?

Sounds very silly and most of the time I brush it off as quirky but today I genuinely had to calculate my age based on my year of birth to figure out how old I’ll be next week. I’ll be 33. I will most likely forget again by tomorrow, that’s what always happens. I have twin 18mo babies and yes things can get very stressful. I read a lot of articles like “mums of twins will definitely relate to THIS” but to be honest I’ve never heard of other parents in general forgetting their age. It’s such a personal thing I see it as being like forgetting your hair colour. AIBU to worry? Is it a sign of something else? Or is this extremely normal and just not talked about a lot? Confused

I think it’s normal. I get my age wrong initially at least half the time.

I don’t think it’s like hair colour as your age changes obviously. I think it’s also very common to get “stuck” at a particular age.

Ponoka7 · 15/03/2020 10:32

I stopped counting so i started to forget how old i was around your age.

With twins that age, it's perfectly normal to not be able to do mental arithmetic, as is memory loss, if you are busy.

How's your sleep pattern etc?

LisaSimpsonsbff · 15/03/2020 10:32

I don't have twins - I have one 20 month old who sleeps well, so I'm reasonably sure I'm operating at a normal level of cognitive function! - and I have to think quite hard to remember if I'm 31, 32, or 33 (I'm 32 and will be 33 in July). I've found it hard since about 30 - I don't know if it's a bit of denial, that I can't really believe how fast time is going! But I'm not very worried about it. After all, it's not like being a kid where being 8 and 3/4 or whatever is a tremendously important fact that you talk about regularly - I can't remember the last time someone asked me my age or that it was very relevant, so it's not something you think about very frequently (and, unlike your hair colour, you don't see it in the mirror daily!)

mauvaisereputation · 15/03/2020 10:33

I always forget and have to work it out. I’m 33 (I think).

DonnaDarko · 15/03/2020 10:33

The other day I put "I'm 35" on a thread, then had to double check lol

LuciLuci · 15/03/2020 10:36

@Ponoka7 oh my sleep pattern is absolutely awful, I actually have an appointment coming up in a couple of months at the sleep clinic due to the problems I’m having. I never actually linked this to anything else. ... thank you!

@LisaSimpsonsbff I try to avoid looking in the mirror whenever possible Grin I’m still ginger though Wink

wineandcheeseplease · 15/03/2020 10:37

I never remember! I have to stop and think (I'm 32)

Ponoka7 · 15/03/2020 10:38

It's sleep deprivation then. Google it and memory loss. I've found out since going through the menopause that it's also linked to hormones.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 15/03/2020 10:39

I have twins and definitely forget what age I am (and they are!) I don't even have sleep deprivation as an excuse!

CastleCrasher · 15/03/2020 10:40

I do this all the time. I have 2dc but pretty sure I did it before that too! Blush

LuciLuci · 15/03/2020 10:40

I love this place Smile I feel so much better already. Thank you everybody. Back to worrying about Coronavirus Halo

SlayingDragons · 15/03/2020 10:41

When I had my first DC and joined a baby group with all the others from my antenatal classes, there was a general conversation about how old we all were and I couldn’t remember - I was 24. Eldest DC is now 15 and I still can’t remember. I have to calculate it from my year of birth every time. (And then add 4 to get my DH’s age because I can’t remember his either)

ChocolateTea · 15/03/2020 10:41

I've spent god knows how many months telling people I'm 38. Until I twigged this weekend I'm not 40 until 2022.so I'm only 37.

It happens.

BecauseReasons · 15/03/2020 10:45

I'm younger than you and have to calculate my age by taking DH's age and subtracting the age difference.

Slith · 15/03/2020 10:45

All of last year I thought that I was 42 - I was only 41.
I don't have children.

hels71 · 15/03/2020 10:47

Ever since I turned 30 I have had to calculate my age from my date of birth. I am now 48....

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 15/03/2020 10:51

It might be sleep deprivation but I think this happens more and more as you get older because age becomes less relevant.

Zoecarter · 15/03/2020 10:53

I am 33 and I keep thinking am I 32. I also have a 20 month old I think it’s normal xx

Auridon4life · 15/03/2020 10:55

Me too OP people always get called the wrong name and I've never remembered my age. Have to ask my partner. It's a blind spot in my brain because I'm good at remembering everything else. My mum is exactly the same. I wouldnt worry about it:)

RhodaDendron · 15/03/2020 11:01

The only reason I know how old I am is because I’m a few weeks younger than Kate Middleton. If I forget, I google her. I have a three month old but it’s still a bit worrying!

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 15/03/2020 11:04

I have to tell my friend how old she is when it is her birthday. She is 33 too. She forgot it was her 30th bday. I arranged a little party for her at my house, I had to tell her it was because she is 30!

I think it is more common than not.

ThanosSavedMe · 15/03/2020 11:05

I think you’re the right age to start forgetting!

I remember talking to a woman when I was in my 20’s and she couldn’t remember. She eventually worked out she was 33. I thought it was hilarious.

Roll on a few years and the exact same thing happened to me at around that age.

One year I thought I was turning 46 on my birthday, then realised I was only 44 turning 45!

Don’t worry, eventually we start remembering again. How many older people have you met when they tell you ‘I’m 72 now you know’ 🤣

user1333796 · 15/03/2020 11:06

Weirdly, at 32 I used to have to double check by counting from my DOB very regularly, but now I am 33 I never forget... No idea why.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 15/03/2020 11:07

My friend spent nearly a whole year telling people she was 24 when it suddenly dawned on her that she was 23.

I have to really think hard about how old I am sometimes.

My family (outside my immediate family) are JW's, my uncle says he often has absolutely no idea how old he is and has to do the maths.

LakieLady · 15/03/2020 11:09

I don't have any trouble remembering that I'm 64 years, 7 months and 2 days, but that's probably because I'm counting the days until I get my state pension and can retire.

I don't remember my 30s well enough to recall if I forgot my age. I spent most of my years from approx 25 to 40 drinking copious amounts of alcohol and ingesting god knows what else.
