Possibly one of the few payoffs from covid-19?

OP posts:
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/03/2020 19:27

CFs in my local garden centre this morning had stolen the toilet roll. Overheard one member of staff asking the other if they'd mind filling the dispensers again as someone had stolen the new rolls that they'd only just put on.

Can you be certain that the culprit wasn't actually the staff member?!

Queenofeverything44 · 16/03/2020 20:03

I am a wfhm with a Cardiac child...
Cf have already said I can look after their kids cos I do fuck all all day... I've stopped opening my inbox..

Fimofriend · 16/03/2020 20:04

@PlinkiePlonk og No, you are not over thinking. She was most definitely trying to get you to offer to look after her kids.

PlinkiePlonk · 16/03/2020 22:12

Fimo - good to know. Today it was all about how she will have to close the restaurant next week so will lose money on the rent. I love the kids, I do, but they demand a lot of attention and a lot of food

Givemeabreakpls · 16/03/2020 22:20

Count me in on this. One cf friend asked me to look after their poorly child who was advised not to go to school today (it’s ‘just a cold’) as I wfh. 1. I’m working 2. I must have missed the memo about your extensive medical knowledge and 3. I have a child and immunocompromised family and would like to avoid anyone who is poorly at the moment just in case. It was a polite but firm no from me. I do feel bad still...

Pomegranatepompom · 16/03/2020 22:43

We predicted 4 people who would off work 'with symptom' and 2 of the 4 are already off.

MauriceandAlec · 16/03/2020 22:43

I've already been told, not asked, by 8 people "Oh you'll be my lifesaver when I need childcare".

I hope you made it very clear to them that this will NOT happen. Just a simple, no, I have two vulnerable people in my care and will not be providing childcare for this reason.

Jokie · 16/03/2020 23:25

I've had a few guilt trips today to look after friends sick kids so their parents can work. When reminded that I've got to work AND an immunocompromised so it's not the best idea to be around a sickly child, they suddenly become defensive

ChestOfFields · 17/03/2020 00:08

So many people took the piss out of me when I stockpiled for brexit..

Luckily, my DDs (and families) all live within 5 mins of each other so we'll just pool together anyway!
There might be a few more kids though, as my DD works in a school so she's offered to look after a couple of friends DC (parents work in nhs)

Subeccoo · 17/03/2020 06:38

I was asked days ago (I'm a teacher) if I'd have my friends children in event of school closures Shock she said I'd be inundated... She's the only one who's asked and the answer was no. I've just lost my mum, I need to look after my dad and I am no way putting him at any increased risk Sad

I had a boss who had swine flu twice 🙄

I have

I’m getting grief left, right and centre because I’m the Chair of a volunteer staffed after-school care, breakfast club and holiday playscheme. Our before and after school has been cancelled because all external lets have been cancelled in the school. There is nothing I can do about it

I’m being pressured to open the Easter playscheme full time in the holidays (we do 1 week usually 10-4) as it’s the “fair and responsible thing to do”

Annoyingly most of the pressure is coming from people who normally come out with “I wouldn’t put my kid in a volunteer run place” who have been let down by the extremely expensive private facility who decided last week to close

I’m ignoring it all

Spotted locally
a Reiki practitioner offering , albeit free, virtual sessions for new clients. Ie touting for future business and suggesting a very foolish and potentially dangerous treatment. On a par with tv faith healers. Especially if people think that it will offer any protection.
I have responded pointing this out.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 17/03/2020 10:02

She has replied. Apparently she is a Reiki master who has the power to transmit a universal life force to others, even remotely. What utter crap.

Really12345 · 17/03/2020 10:11

You see this worries me. Do and I both work in the nhs In the frontline. If schools close what do we do? (Although DH might have to self isolate as he’s in An at risk group) I had hoped my closest sahm friend would help out. She won’t And implied I’m an massive CF for even asking. So that’s an nhs worker down. We’re bloody risking our lives Here and yet it’s CF to ask someone to care for my daughter so we can both do that....I’d rather stay at home nice and safe (and I will now as I won’t have childcare) but when all these people who say it’s CF to ask for childcare help are dying because there aren’t enough nhs staff well right back at you......

Biddie191 · 17/03/2020 10:25

Really12345 Thank you - I hope that you manage to get something sorted out, but most of all I hope that you and your family stay safe. Thank you for all that you are doing, and have done.

mbosnz · 17/03/2020 10:59

@Really12345

I'd help you out like a shot.

StatisticallyChallenged · 17/03/2020 11:06

Can't speak for others Really12345 but while we won't be able to do it for free we will be doing our damndest to provide childcare for hcp if the schools close. I run a childcare company and we're already trying to identify people quietly who might need us. We don't want to advertise because a) we're not at that point yet and b) we'll only get social media warriors telling us it should be free (because our staff and their families live on fresh air clearly).

Hopefully there will be folk around you doing similar.

scoobiedoobiedoo · 17/03/2020 11:15

I really hope the Uk will do what they are doing in other countries, schools must provide care for children whose parents work in vital services, not just Medical, but police, emrergency services, Supermarkets, energy workers, garbage collectors, anything considered essential. This is certainly the case in Germany where I live.

Jokie · 17/03/2020 13:18

In Germany and Holland your kids are assured daycare if you work in one of the critical jobs listed by the government (this includes people working in the food supply chain).

LeNil · 17/03/2020 13:44

France has childcare provisions for HCP, so crèches, schools etc. I’m not sure if this extends to police/ other emergency services although it must include fire service as they are paramedics. They have also offered free taxis to and from work, along with hotel rooms to all HCP who need them.

ScreamedAtTheMichelangelo · 17/03/2020 14:38

My employer has asked for details of which staff members have children, so that they can allocate work in a "resilient" way. Us childless people know exactly what that means... Hmm

Hope you're looking forward to doing the work of ten people. What about those who care for elderly relatives?

I'm childless (couldn't have them) and now retired but still remember being pissed off at colleagues with children being given all the plum holidays.

PlayingGrownUp · 20/03/2020 13:24

@ScreamedAtTheMichelangelo

I already had the same discussion with my manager’s manager (my manager, bless him knew better than to address it) asking why I didn’t put more hours in due to the number of people off for childcare issues.

I asked where covering other people’s childcare is in my contract. I mean, I’ll help a friend out now and then when they are stuck but no way am I working every shift in the foreseeable future just because I have no kids.

AngelsSins · 20/03/2020 15:21

Those cheeky working mums how dare they ask for a bit of help

SAHM are not free childminders

My god men really do get a free pass, no blame accounted to them for not looking after their own kids, and not asked to look after anyone’s else’s! Who would be a woman....!
