Bagless Delivery and Self Isolation

HidingUnderARock · 13/03/2020 16:28

Vote: Yes = bagless deliveries will work (please explain in comment)
No = bag option should be available at checkout.

Exactly how can someone or an entire household self isolate if food deliveries from supermarkets insist on no bags?
I have just booked a Tesco delivery for Monday - the earliest one that's available.
For a family of 4 there is no way it can be left loose on the doorstep without bags.
Are there sensible options? This will affect a lot of people.

Put a box out.

angstinabaggyjumper · 13/03/2020 16:30

Could you leave a box out?

DrySnitch · 13/03/2020 16:30

Plastic crate or box is what I do anyway

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 16:32

Bags won't make much difference to home delivery. The things have been touched by everybody and their uncle before getting picked for your home delivery. Tesco driver carrying them in a bag isn't going to change that.

Use a box for practical reasons, it won't make a difference re COVID-19

EdinaMonsoon · 13/03/2020 16:36

Actually they may not agree to leave things inside the box or crate for you as they will need to touch it and anything inside your house could be contaminated with the virus. I have just received a text from our delivery driver to say that from today they are leaving shopping on the doorstep in bags, until further notice, instead of handing it to the resident. Usually we hand the bags from the previous weeks shop back to the driver but they aren't accepting these anymore either.

EdinaMonsoon · 13/03/2020 16:37

That should read "anything from inside your house"

BeyondMyWits · 13/03/2020 16:40

A box... We have 6 totes worth of stuff. (around 18 bags worth in the old system.)

If you are self isolating you are trying to stop infecting others - like the driver - not the other way round. If the driver can drop the bags at the doorstep and not have the self-isolator touch any totes etc it would work. So bags are a much better way to go... for now...

HidingUnderARock · 13/03/2020 16:41

I could put a couple of boxes out, yes. That might work, though they'd have to lift each item out and put it in. A lot of extra work.

@bemoreeverything I was thinking of protecting the driver (and next customers) from the self-isolating family, though I know it can work both ways.

@EdinaMonsoon that's interesting, which company is that?

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 16:45

Of course, sorry I totally didn't think about this the right way round at all. Bags needed I think.

Redglitter · 13/03/2020 16:45

I've kept a big box aside incase I have to self isolate. It wont be much more work for the driver instead of him coming in and me helping him unpack hed just put them in the box

EdinaMonsoon · 13/03/2020 16:45

@HidingUnderARock It's Ocado.

In our case, it's actually what needs to happen since my eldest son is currently in isolation at home, awaiting test results. Although he is confined to his bedroom I am still paranoid regarding contact with others.

Myshitisreal · 13/03/2020 16:48

I booked a slot for next weekend with Tesco and there was a new option at the end to have a note. I assume this is so you can state please put in bags etc as self isolation. Did you have this option on checkout????

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/03/2020 16:49

I've just had that Ocado text too and will be putting all this to the test within the hour. Oo err. We always have bags and give them back periodically for a refund. Had not thought of the box system.

AmputatedSoul · 13/03/2020 16:50

@EdinaMonsoon Morrison's are doing exactly the same

Myshitisreal · 13/03/2020 16:51

Hmmm I've just rechecked out and it didn't ask me. It was only at the first initial booking. Ring the shop or helpline and explain, they will accommodate you for sure. Its in their interests to

Chloemol · 13/03/2020 16:52

Why would putting them in a box cause more work for the driver? Surely he unloads the box now?

Scarlettpixie · 13/03/2020 16:56

cholermol when I have an online shop, i unpack them not the delivery person. Usually I take the crates or bags at the door.

OP can you use a different store? Some use bags.

Redglitter · 13/03/2020 16:57

I've always had an option to leave a note on my order. Definitely not new

DonaldDrunk · 13/03/2020 17:00

@Myshitisreal Tesco have had the note box for years, I used to ask the driver to say silly things to my DH when they delivered!

@cumnet123

Mummy and Daddy have taken you out of school to self isolate, but why have gone to work and left you home alone, haven't they?

Tartyflette · 13/03/2020 17:13

We had a delivery from Ocado yesterday as normal. The driver handed it over at the door but it'll be fine if he leaves it in the porch.
One of the reasons We changed to Ocado is that they deliver in bags, charge you 5p per bag, but collect them the next week and refund the money to your account.

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 13/03/2020 17:20

Well that’s lowered the tone of the thread. From Ocado to spunking in a condom in less than one hour.

sueelleker · 13/03/2020 17:23

Sainsbury used to offer bags, which I paid for. They've now stopped doing them altogether.

tammiedog · 13/03/2020 17:28

Ocado and Waitrose still use bags, I use the latter now and they provide a number to discuss options if you are in self quarantine.
