Bagless Delivery and Self Isolation

HidingUnderARock · 13/03/2020 16:28

Vote: Yes = bagless deliveries will work (please explain in comment)
No = bag option should be available at checkout.

Exactly how can someone or an entire household self isolate if food deliveries from supermarkets insist on no bags?
I have just booked a Tesco delivery for Monday - the earliest one that's available.
For a family of 4 there is no way it can be left loose on the doorstep without bags.
Are there sensible options? This will affect a lot of people.

Isn't having your shopping delivered pretty hypocritical?

Ocado delivery this morning. Lovey driver seemed very apologetic that he was no longer allowed to carry the bags into the kitchen, instructions are now to leave the bags at the door, not ask me to sign for the delivery and not to accept any bags for recycling

All fine by me.

Lynda07 · 13/03/2020 17:39

Presumably someone will be in when the delivery arrives so no need for it to be left on the doorstep. Have a big box handy for everything to be put in, that's what I do - sometimes two boxes or big bags.

I wondered that, how are grocery deliveries hypocritical? I've had deliveries for a couple of years and it's very useful and convenient. Now that so many people are wary of catching or spreading 'germs' it makes sense not to be walking around shops with loads of other people. I have stuff delivered from Boots and Superdrug too.

Horehound · 13/03/2020 17:49

Because you want to stay happily at home away from the virus. What about the driver?!

Needtochangemymindset · 13/03/2020 17:50

DH is a delivery driver for Sainsbury, this is the advice from Sainsbury

  1. Let the store know you have self isolated by either adding a note to your order or calling the store. 2)They will put a note on your order and your oder will be put in to bags.
  2. The driver will leave your bags either on your doorstep or your drive.
  3. If you DO NOT let the store know and tell the driver face to face when he arrives he does NOT have to leave your shopping. To minimise his/her own risk of catching it he/she can refuse and leave and return your shopping to the store.

My DH has now delivered to several people who have only told him they're self isolating once he was in their houses!!! Two of the households were self isolating because they've just come back from Italy!! Self isolating doesn't work if you still let your delivery man in your house!

Needtochangemymindset · 13/03/2020 17:52

Just incase anyone is wondering how you will know your delivery has arrived if its left on your doorstep, they call you to say they've delivered it.

Saladmakesmesad · 13/03/2020 17:54

Oh I wondered why the delivery men unpacked all my shopping item by item last week - I thought I forgot to ask for bags, didn't realise it wasn't an option anymore. Wasn't too keen on them handling all my stuff tbh (I'm in a wheelchair currently so couldn't do it fast enough myself) though obviously I know it all gets handled when picking and packing too. I can't go to the store at the moment (can't drive/wheelchair) so no other option but it does seem a bit daft not to just let people have bags.

Redglitter · 13/03/2020 17:55

Judging by the serious lack of Tesco delivery slots in the coming week there are a lot more people opting for delivery rather than venturing out. First slot available just now is Wednesday. There would usually be slots for tomorrow but certainly Sunday at this point in the week

He or she is probably quite happy to be working, I'm sure I would be in that position. It's also possible that he may have to self isolate at some stage and rely on deliveries.

There is no point in people not having groceries delivered because of the Corona virus especially when they have them anyway. Flipping heck it keeps people in work and a steady job is not to be sneezed at (no pun intended).

I’ve just cancelled my online delivery scheduled for Monday, as I went on this afternoon to add something and noticed that half of my shop was no longer available so would have been pointless.

I’ll have to go to the supermarket instead and possibly re-think what we are eating next week if I can’t even get a packet of rice or a tin of tomatoes Shock

Imicola · 13/03/2020 18:06

We always go bagless, and last week the delivery driver didn't come in. I carried the creates to the kitchen and then unloaded and returned the crates. Alternative would have been to unload into the hall then move afterwards. No big deal.

Pollaidh · 13/03/2020 18:09

Ocado texted this afternoon to say drivers are now only allowed to leave the shopping outside (Ocado is always bagged, usually a pain but now useful) and cannot accept returns of bags from last week.

I've been calling Ocado all afternoon anyway as we have someone in self-isolation and so needed both the prescriptions dropped off by taxi this morning, and the shopping dropped off outside this evening.

It worked well. Driver called to check substitutes. Then called when he'd unloaded the bags. We waited until he'd gone and collected the bags.

sleepingpup · 13/03/2020 18:10

Delivery guy literally just told me that they are going to deliver in Bag for life bags if they need to leave outside. This is Tesco.

Imicola · 13/03/2020 18:11

No wait, I misunderstood the question. Doh! The point I guess is you can't open the door so they have to leave it outside. So yeah, either leave your own box, or you'll need it to be bagged. I await my time to test it.

Glassmami · 13/03/2020 18:13

Tesco have just sent an email explaining what to do! Check your inboxes!

PeterPanGoesWrong · 13/03/2020 18:29

Can you not opt to have bags?
Put a note in the ‘notes’ section, saying. Coronavirus, please knock and step away, we are self isolating victims.

Kinneddar · 13/03/2020 18:33

Doesnt mean you wouldnt have got it though. Stock changes constantly it means you cant get that stuff just now. I had a Tesco order this week when I looked online the say of my delivery there was a ton of stuff out of stock. My order didnt have a single thing missing from it. There would be several stock deliveries between now & Monday when they make your order up

BasinHaircut · 13/03/2020 18:37

I can’t be bothered to chance it @Kinneddar. This week’s shop had so much missing that not one meal I’d planned has worked out. If I’ve got to go to the shop I’ll just deal with what is available at the time.

Redglitter · 13/03/2020 18:38

@Glassmami. No email here. What are they saying

Giganticshark · 13/03/2020 18:40

Use Waitrose. You can speak to an actual person in branch and explain your situation or just leave it on the notes section on order page. you can pay for bags it's only 30p. Just don't use a supermarket that won't allow you to use bags. Fuckin ludicrous.
Or try ringing the branch and explain
