Bagless Delivery and Self Isolation

HidingUnderARock · 13/03/2020 16:28

Vote: Yes = bagless deliveries will work (please explain in comment)
No = bag option should be available at checkout.

Exactly how can someone or an entire household self isolate if food deliveries from supermarkets insist on no bags?
I have just booked a Tesco delivery for Monday - the earliest one that's available.
For a family of 4 there is no way it can be left loose on the doorstep without bags.
Are there sensible options? This will affect a lot of people.

Just leave a box outside! The plastic bag problem doesn’t disappear with Coronavirus. I’d see them banned completely.

No problem with my Ocado delivery. The man brought it to the door exactly as normal but sometimes they take it a few paces further inside the house. Biggest problem I face with Ocado now is getting back onto the website for next week's delivery. May have to wait till the small hours to find a time when the website is accessible!

'"note box was always there" 🤭 whoops worry over only noticed. My bad.

Tesco email

We understand what a worrying time this is, so we want to make sure that essentials are available to as many customers as possible, and that we can keep delivering to you safely. We’re also working with Public Health England to get their latest advice, so we can prepare for any further developments.

Grocery buying limits
To help everyone have access to the essentials, we may put some common-sense buying limits on certain products - you’ll be able to see buying limits on the individual product pages. We’ll do our best to keep shelves stocked up but at times, we may have low or no availability of some items. Of course, where possible, we’ll pick a suitable substitute for you which you can choose to keep or ask your driver to take back.

Booking a delivery slot
As there may be more customers than normal booking deliveries, you may find that there aren’t as many slots available, so it’s a good idea to try and book further ahead. Don’t forget, you can make amends to your order up until 11.45pm on the day before your delivery.

If you’re a Delivery Saver customer on a paid plan, we’ll still be opening priority Easter slots on Monday 16 March. But demand for slots will be exceptionally high, so please book your slots as early as you can.

Deliveries and advice if you are self-isolating
We want to deliver to you as safely as possible, so please let us know if you’re in self-isolation by telling us in the delivery instructions box when you order online. To be on the safe side, our drivers will be asking everyone they deliver to if they’re self-isolating, so please don’t be offended if you’re asked.

Following the Government’s advice on preventing the spread of COVID-19, if you’re self-isolating, your driver won’t be able to come into your home. But to help make things easier, although we have a bagless policy, we’ll provide clean shopping bags which your driver will use to pack your shopping for you at your door. Lastly, to avoid having to touch our signature touchpad devices, your driver will ask if you’re happy with everything and then sign the order for you.

We hope that this information has been helpful and we’ll do our best to keep your online shopping experience as smooth as possible.

Drivers have been issued with new work instructions for those who are self isolating. They have a stock of bags in the van and will bag up for you, if you inform them you are self isolating. They'll leave it at the door and step back, they have to observe you collecting the delivery and will then sign for it on your behalf.

Just had an email from Tesco explaining all this - you should have one too or soon if you're a customer.

Thank you for the Tesco email. I don't seem to have it, but I can work from yours. I have till Sunday lunchtime to change the order anyway, so I will put out a box and ask them to bag it for me and put in the box.

I'll also look at Waitrose and Morrisons for future.

I think using deliveries is the opposite of selfish and hypocritical fwiw. People who are well need to work, and deliveries are a great way to keep a distance while staying alive.

I've had an email form Tesco regarding home deliveries! It says the driver will ask if you are self isolating and if so he will bag up all the products to hand over rather than trays

HeddaGarbled · 13/03/2020 19:44

Very sensible response from Tesco IMO.

Oxo01 · 13/03/2020 19:59

Just got that email also.

Myshitisreal · 13/03/2020 20:59

At least they have a sensible strategy 😊

BeyondMyWits · 14/03/2020 07:50

within 2 hours of receiving that email "it's a good idea to book ahead" - there were no slots available locally for 3 weeks.

These things create panic.

HeddaGarbled · 14/03/2020 08:56

Damned if they do, dammed if they don’t 🤷‍♀️

Randomword6 · 23/03/2020 15:03

I am new-ish, I can't find out how to post a new thread but would anyone be kind enough to tell me what happens once you get through the virtual queue for Ocado? Do they actually have any slots?

RB68 · 23/03/2020 15:05

First one he deboxed into bags I left outside

second one he left me boxes stood back and let me unload to bags/OH behind me in a pass through to the kitchen chain with dd

after that who cares no slots available - lol

Randomword6 · 23/03/2020 15:07

Relevant to topic (I hope). I plan to leave out boxes and the driver can fill them up (if I actually get a delivery),then leave them sitting so potential virus dies off. I wonder how long would be enough though?
