Airbnb refund

ShaftedCO19 · 13/03/2020 12:03

A few months ago my friend booked accommodation in an Airbnb apartment for myself and two others. We were on a course this weekend.

The course was cancelled a few days ago because the leader has had to self isolate.

Our Airbnb host has informed my friend that as her cancellation policy is strict that she won’t issue a refund or let her change the date of the booking. She advised her to cancel saying that if she could rebook the dates she would give her a refund. We think this is unlikely.

Airbnb themselves say that as there are no travel restrictions in force in the UK, this is down to the host’s discretion. They won’t intervene. My friend has tried calling them several times to try and see if she can get someone different who will help with no luck. She’s also messaged the host who now won’t respond. When she calls her she simply hangs up.

My friends and I are down over £200 each.

By the way I’m a host myself. I also use a strict cancellation policy.I always warn my guests of this before they reserve and should have told my friend to check the policy before she booked. I didn’t think of that so am prepared to eat the loss.

Anyway please keep safe and don’t get caught out if you plan on using airbnb in the near future.

We’ve had flights cancelled in April, and can’t get to our Airbnb so had to cancel. They took 50% which is their policy and fair enough. They’re running a business.

Is this a course for pleasure or for business? Either your personal or business insurance might cover your loss

Scarlettpixie · 13/03/2020 17:06

I would have still gone if going with friends. Especially once it was clear you couldn’t get a refund. The host has done nothing wrong.

ShaftedCO19 · 15/03/2020 10:19

After my friend and many others took to twitter and slammed airbnb for their unfair policy they have changed tack.

We are getting our refund. So will a lot of other people.

I don't understand what's unfair about their policy.

Goatymcgoaty · 15/03/2020 10:29

I believe Airbnb are now refunding 100% if corona presents you from getting to your Airbnb

Rosainryehead · 15/03/2020 10:31

I don't understand what is unfair about this. Presumably you knew the cancellation policy when you booked.

heartsonacake · 15/03/2020 14:11

We are getting our refund.

That’s a shame. You shouldn’t be refunded just because you stamped your feet and threw your toys out the pram.

AStarSoBright · 15/03/2020 14:19

Well I hope your friend is pleased. This situation is awful for so many people, an Airbnb host is no different to anyone else running a business and they rely on an income.

CodenameVillanelle · 15/03/2020 14:19

Airbnb are fucking all their hosts over with this now - anyone can cancel penalty free until mid April because 'coronavirus'

girlwithadragontattoo · 15/03/2020 14:33

Just had the same thing happen to me. Someoje tried to cancel ans asked for a refund, advised them to use their holiday insurance, 4 days later Airbnb have just refunded the guest! This is what insurance is for

CodenameVillanelle · 15/03/2020 14:39

As if it's not hard enough for we hosts who need Airbnb to make ends meet, booking down to almost nothing - the company should take the hit and refund not the hosts.

pinksauce · 15/03/2020 14:52

If you have already cancelled, there is now nothing you can do.

Generally, never cancel unless you will et a refund. At the moment you will be cancelling - but if the government made isolation a legal requirement then the contract would be frustrated and you would be entitled to a full refund - irrespective of any contract (it no longer exists).

If I were you, I would point out that if the government does change the law, then the refund is 100% - so you will accept 50% in full settlement now, so you both share the up/down risk. Otherwise, you will use the AirBNB to isolate and they will then need to arrange a full deep clean.

pinksauce · 15/03/2020 14:54

See you have your refund - sorry for posting late.

Double3xposure · 15/03/2020 15:05

Air BNB have a policy on this and will offer refunds for certain bookings.

If you have a such a booking go into your account and you will see that it’s marked

Extenuating circumstances
This reservation qualifies for a full refund due to the coronavirus outbreak.
