Member of staff stroked my child's face

Aibu to be annoyed that a member of staff in John Lewis touched my babies face today?!

With coronovirus at large, this does annoy me but it's not ok to just touch random babies. Why do people do this?!

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 11/03/2020 23:18

Lol if anything she put herself at risk because babies are the carriers.

AngstyAnnie · 11/03/2020 23:19

It's not meant with malice. Babies evoke affection in people.

I understand your annoyance but all you can do is be on guard and try to anticipate and block it before it happens.

Sonichu · 11/03/2020 23:19

Oh the humanity.

FeeFee382 · 11/03/2020 23:22

@AngstyAnnie I saw it happen in slow motion and said ooooh, sorry please don't - I'm worried about the coronovirus etc.

She looked at me like I was mad! I'm not even that worried, I just don't like when people stick their hands in the bassinet Shock

I’m not usually precious about stuff but I don’t understand why random people touch babies without permission. So weird. Like when people feel your bump when you’re pregnant. What are you doing?

bemoreeverything · 11/03/2020 23:24

It's likely they didn't think. I wondered what your issue was until I read in and you mentioned corona, maybe the staff member also didn't consider it.

TheFlis12345 · 11/03/2020 23:28

You are paranoid about Corona yet took your baby out shopping? Of course YABU.

UserV · 11/03/2020 23:29

@FeeFee382

YANBU at all. Even if coronavirus was not a thing, it's weird as fuck for some random person to touch/stroke/feel your baby.

I would have been annoyed too!

pigsDOfly · 11/03/2020 23:35

There must be something wrong with me. I've never ever had the urge to touch someone else's baby.

Likewise touching other women's stomachs because they're pregnant.

Used to drive me up the wall when people did this to me; it's bloody weird. And it wasn't just women who did it, men I hardly knew seemed to think it was okay to touch a woman stomach because she's carrying a child.

Christ, I've heard it all now Hmm

Potkettlexx · 11/03/2020 23:58

I was once on a bus with my bundle of joy as a baby.... 4/5 months old.

She was over my shoulder and the lady sat behind us stood up and kissed her on the forehead 😳 yes it was nice I suppose but really not the done thing

redwinefine · 12/03/2020 00:00

YANBU. I hate this. Poke her in her face! See how she reacts to that!!!

Juliehooligan · 12/03/2020 00:22

@FeeFee382 it’s kissing babies that bugs me, you don’t know what the random person could be carrying, especially as cold sores can be fatal for babies.

Ericaequites · 12/03/2020 00:47

I am one of three children from the same parents who were married 59 years. My mother wanted Dad to feel us moving inside her as we kicked and shifted. My father refused to do so, as he was afraid to cause a miscarriage from gently touching her tummy. This was in 1960, 1961, and 1970.
A person should only touch a pregnant mom's tummy when invited and if the person is someone you would let hold the baby when it is born.

eaglejulesk · 12/03/2020 02:45

Oh not this again!!!! You are being ridiculous - all this "don't touch my child" is modern day nonsense.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 12/03/2020 02:53

This works the other way too, I’ve had a toddler randomly grab/touch me with their germ infested little claws on a train. I’m probably going to survive this encounter but I would rather not experience it again (regardless of Coronavirus). Parents seemed oblivious and thought it was cute

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 12/03/2020 02:54

Modern day nonsense? Fuck off

Cacaca · 12/03/2020 03:28

Not nonsense at all - nobody has any right to touch anybody. Even a baby - especially when the mother has said no.

Monty27 · 12/03/2020 03:31

I despair at this thread.
Oh such precious posters
Shock

TeaAndDarkToast · 12/03/2020 04:14

@Potkettlexx I'd have been tempted to lean over and kiss her husband and see how she liked that.

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 12/03/2020 05:03

I was recently on an international flight and the amount of strangers who came over to touch my baby's face was crazy. They are trying to be nice. Doesn't make It ok though

Esspee · 12/03/2020 05:14

I used to live in the Caribbean where the Indian population pinch the cheeks, arms and legs of babies they think cute.

My mother was so paranoid about it that she kept my pfb away from every Indian woman she saw.
We never did get an explanation for this behaviour which was so extreme sometimes he would be marked.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/03/2020 05:32

I get you op. Strangers do not have the right to touch adults. So why children. It’s about germs, yes. But also about boundaries.

Ive had a toddler randomly grab/ touch me with their germ infested little claws Shock. What a disgusting thing to say about a child. Are you so detached from reality to realise you were once a small child and may have done the same when you were 2?

SamSeabornforPresident · 12/03/2020 05:36

had a toddler randomly grab/ touch me with their germ infested little claws.

Wow. What a horrible way to describe a small child. I can't imagine despising anyone so much, never mind a child.
