To have chucked the microwave...

I never use the microwave. DP and teenage DCs use it regularly.
When cleaning the kitchen I, usually, just wipe around the outside of the microwave as I assumed inside was being cleaned after each use.
Today I opened it. OMFG!! Disgusting doesn't cover it. Turntable, door, roof, all walls were CAKED in food. Not the odd spatter, full on encased. My oven is cleaner and it hasn't been cleaned for 3 months.
I fully lost it and threw it out in the garden for the scrapman.
DP says I'm being ridiculous. I think, if they can't wipe over the thing after use, they don't deserve to have it.

Slight over reaction! I would have made them clean it.

Snowpatrolling · 11/03/2020 19:24

My friend did this with her dishwasher!
Her son and daughter in law wernt even scraping food scraps on the bin and were putting the whole plate caked in food in the washer! She threatened it for days then one day the pipes clogged so she dragged it out for the scrap men!! Now they have to wash up!!

coffeeandpyjamas · 11/03/2020 19:24

I’d have done the same. Total disregard of basic cleanliness from 1 actual adult and 2 almost adults. Yuck!!

Zombiemum1946 · 11/03/2020 19:27

To be honest I don't expect that my family clean anything. I would have attempted to get them to clean it in the full knowledge they wouldn't. Then I would have thrown it in the garden.

Wavey123 · 11/03/2020 19:28

It’s a bit wasteful, as it sounds well used so a new one will be needed when it can just be cleaned. Give them a warning first and get them to clean it, a few minutes with a bowl of lemon water to steam it off then it should scrape off OK

PJsEveryday · 11/03/2020 19:29

I'd have flipped my lid, made them clean it and in a few day time, when I'd checked it and could see that they'd paid bo heed and and that they were still not cleaning it, andwould THEN have then have chucked it.

negomi90 · 11/03/2020 19:52

You aren't using it, its more theirs than anyone elses. It hasn't made them sick.
Suddenly punishing people by taking things they like without warning (and there was no warning as presumably it has been like that for ages without you knowing or any consequences) isn't how you treat a child let alone an adult and two teenagers.

BumbleBeee69 · 11/03/2020 19:57

Good on you OP... let them wonder where this Non-self cleaning item has gone .. 😂

Overcomplicated · 11/03/2020 21:26

They're not getting a new one. They can use the oven and hob. They clean pans, bowls etc after themselves. No excuse for the state if the microwave. Teens are only 13 so not adults but know better. DP is 41 and, last week, went ape with me because I hadn't wiped the chopping board 5 minutes after using it!

I've done this! My ex used to cook beacon via the microwave on a plate with no cover. Found it covered in bacon fat a fortnight after scrubbing it clean and asking him to stop it. I chucked, told it was screwed (it wasn't) it and made him buy a new one, microwaving the bacon stopped after that

1Morewineplease · 11/03/2020 22:13

Over 25 years without one , after it broke down. None of us miss it.

Fannia · 11/03/2020 22:16

Well they should have cleaned it but you sound a bit OTT.

Estara · 11/03/2020 22:23

Oh I'm with you on this. We have a microwave oven and my DP will only use that and not the actual oven. I repeatedly ask him to make sure he cleans the glass plate and rack after each use, I opened it to use the other day and I was gross. I called him through to the kitchen to sort it and he rinsed it under the tap! I had to explain that hot water and washing up liquid was needed 🙈. If we had the room in the kitchen I would like a second microwave that is just for my use.

Ginkypig · 11/03/2020 22:24

Well yes obviously they should have been cleaning it but why do you think you have the unilateral right to decide what they deserve? You don't even use it or even see inside it normally so what's it got to do with you?

QuestionableMouse · 11/03/2020 22:24

It's a bit selfish to chuck it out. Sounds like you did it because you don't use it. They're fab for making quick meals and I'd prefer a 13yo to use it over the hob. Yes it should be clean but sometimes they get grotty really quickly.

EmmiJay · 11/03/2020 22:40

As someone who gives the inside of the microwave a wipe everyday, even when its only been used once, I am on your side OP. I would have thrown it out too! Bleh.

Lucked · 11/03/2020 22:43

Well if they are going to replace it that that is incredible wasteful as a bit of elbow grease could have cleaned. I would have put it in the garage/shed and said it only comes back in clean.

Intrigued by the scrap man, all our stuff has to go the dump.

Overcomplicated · 11/03/2020 22:51

@Ginkypig it's my house, my kitchen, my kids. That gives me the right!
@QuestionableMouse my kids can all cook from scratch. Dd13 has a twitter account documenting her recipes.
@lucked it's not going to be replaced and scrapman took it within 3 hours if putting it out

They can live without a microwave. We got rid of ours 2 years ago and haven't looked back it was taking up too much space and we needed the space to put a sterilizer.

JRUIN · 11/03/2020 23:01

Have you ever considered anger management?

Lidon · 11/03/2020 23:12

Yabu simply for not disposing of it properly. Leaving it in the garden means it'll get stripped for metal and the rest will be fly tipped.

gamerchick · 11/03/2020 23:16

I don't blame you for getting rid.... However.

If someone had sprayed the inside. Put a half cup of water in and put it on high for 5 minutes. It would have been easy to clean.

I wouldn't let them have another one though. Lazy gits.

Ginkypig · 11/03/2020 23:19

Well ok the your house and even at a stretch your kids argument I get but your dp isn't a child or your possession. You don't have the right to tell your supposed equal life partner that they aren't getting something.

How would you like it if he decided you didn't look after your phone or hairdryer (or another item that he never uses) to his liking so he took it off you threw it away and told you you weren't getting a replacement?

Your not living in a dictatorship.

GummyGoddess · 11/03/2020 23:20

I think you were unreasonable, it wasn't affecting you in any way.
