Weinstein will most likely die in prison

23 years - nearly the maximum sentence of 29. I hope he feels every single one of them. Nothing can give his victims back the years of safety, happiness and faith in humanity he stole from them, but this at least is a just sentence. I hope all the brave, powerful women who testified against him (and all of the women who never got that chance) feel some kind of vindication tonight.

Curious to know the thought process from the 2% who apparently voted 'YABU'...

Confused
Patroclus · 11/03/2020 19:19

Dont know how finances work in US prison but if he gets access to his im sure he wont be making many enemies in there

CoraPirbright · 11/03/2020 19:38

I was amazed at a R4 interview this morning, when it was said his defence lawyers had asked for a minimum sentence on health grounds

I was gobsmacked too Fr0g but more so that they also mentioned a smaller sentence given his contribution to cinema Shock. Sooooo they think it might be ok to be a serial rapist and carry out countless sexual assaults because we all thought Shakespeare in Love was a fun film...........

Funny though, isnt it, that he seemed fine and dandy until the accusations started to fly and then suddenly he was hobbling around everywhere with a Zimmer frame.....

amusedbush · 11/03/2020 19:49

My first thought when I heard his sentence is that he will lodge as many appeals as he is permitted to get it cut down. However I personally hope he he is locked up until he dies.

Findawaytobehappy · 11/03/2020 19:58

How have I never heard of Ronan Farrow?? What a man. Ordering the book.

pamplemoussed · 11/03/2020 20:03

Roman Farrow is the son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen. Needless to say he does not think much of his ‘dad’.

Findawaytobehappy · 11/03/2020 20:51

Just realised my autocorrect error. Fail.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 11/03/2020 21:42

Ronan Farrow was also in the BBC documentary on Weinstein.

He has in the past commented on father also being his brother-in-law.

AcrossthePond55 · 11/03/2020 21:47

He's been sentenced to 23 years in NY. He's facing 4 additional charges in California with potential sentences totaling 28 years. If he's convicted of those, serving that time would begin AFTER his term in New York ends (if he lives long enough).

I haven't seen anything about how long he must serve before he's eligible for parole in NY. I'd hazard a guess (and it's only a guess) that he'll have to serve around 11 years before he's eligible (usually 1/2 the sentence). And being granted parole is based on the person admitting fault and acknowledging what he did was wrong. Not sure if he's capable of that or if the parole board would believe him if he did.

If he's convicted in California and given, say 20 years, he's still looking at a total of around 20-21 years in the hoosegow between the two States.

Good riddance!

UYScuti · 11/03/2020 23:15

Looks like it's open season on sexual predators....

SudokuQueen · 11/03/2020 23:33

So?

I feel sorry for the hundreds that die from hunger every day.

I don't know how anyone can feel sorry for that waste of air, unless of course you have little humanity about you.

He will die in there. Hopefully soon, then he won't cost people too much for being in there.

BitOfFun · 11/03/2020 23:33

Jodi Cantor and Megan Twohey actually broke the story before Farrow. Their book is really good.

LorenzoStDubois · 12/03/2020 00:03

He will appeal because he has no other way of passing the time now.
He can concentrate all his energies on getting out.
He deserves every minute of his full sentence though.

I wish sentencing was as tough as this where I'm from.
Where I'm from, a rape conviction involves maybe 18 months in jail - tops. Sentences run concurrently.
A number of convicted rapists have merely walked free out of court after a guilty verdict.
The lunatics took over the asylum long ago.
If things carry on like that where I'm from, soon enough rape victims will have to apologise to their rapists. ….and probably give them a consolation blow job as well.

Dita73 · 12/03/2020 00:07

I thought he’d top himself before he was sentenced. One way or another,he won’t last all that time. Not that I care

StuckBetweenDarknessAndLight · 12/03/2020 00:11

Unfortunately I don't think he will have any moment of compassion for his victims. He deserves every one of those years and I hope he lives to see them through.

UYScuti · 12/03/2020 00:25

so?
Oh yes I see my post was ambiguous then let me be clear, sexual predators deserve everything they get, I hope they're all quaking in their boots

MorganKitten · 12/03/2020 00:34

Good

Fr0g · 12/03/2020 00:46

@CoraPirbright = WOW = I missed the bit about contribution to cinema - in my usual getting ready for work, only hear half of stuff.
I hope whoever was sentencing added on a few years for the audacity of that alone.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 12/03/2020 00:46

The statement from his lawyer was laughable. They will appeal. I have never seen someone on a Walker whizz about like he does and he forgets to be disabled sometimes when faced with steps. He needs to live the life of misery and isolation he deserves.

CoraPirbright · 12/03/2020 07:29

Absolutely Fr0g - I am sure it was that seriously bolshy barrister who stormed out of the hearing declaring the whole thing ridiculous!!

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/03/2020 07:31

Yes, I love the idea that rape is - what? Less serious? More understandable? Less rapey? - if you make really nice films.

I plant a lot of trees. Does that mean if I rob a bank I get a lesser sentence for services to the environment?

Babybel90 · 12/03/2020 20:16

To appeal he’d have to have grounds to appeal, not sure what he could cite?

flirtygirl · 12/03/2020 20:44

I hope he does die in prison.

He got a shorter sentence than some black 16 and 17 year olds, who get tried as adults when they just happenned to be in a car when a crime was committed. Convicted for felony whatever because they happened to be friends with the wrong person.

Weinstein is an evil predator, he should have got far longer but loads of evidence never saw the light of day, due to his great expensive lawyers.

Rowan8 · 12/03/2020 20:56

I think it’s vile he used his position this way, to “hook” women to abuse them, to humiliate them, belittle them but also, he is not the only one, this goes on closer to home also, senior managers, company directors, even trying to sign off on a major contracts... until these things are addressed too, where are we..? I just hope this will give these other men a wake up call
