To get an extension on my sick note

Hi I had an operation 6 weeks ago and was told at my pre op I would need 6 weeks off work. I have had a few complications since the op - some bleeding whilst in hospital and an infection.
I would say now that I am 80% fit for work, however its a really busy time at worker the next month and I know that I won't be able to do light duties as we don't have enough staff and then I will feel like the other staff think im not pulling my weight.
AIBU to get an extension on my sick note for another 4 weeks?

Go back when you feel ready everybody heals at different rates.

You were told 6 weeks. But that’s without complications. I would ask for a further note but wouldn’t ask for a whole month in one go. You could feel much better in a couple of week. (Hope you recover soon OP!) Flowers

It's better to recover fully then go back early and have to be off again. Hope you feel better soon

Sounds like you need it. Doing too much too soon could compromise your recovery in the long term. Don't feel guilty about safeguarding your health - your body has been through a lot! Flowers

YANBU. In fact it sounds very reasonable.

sarahj86 · 12/03/2020 14:08

YANBU. Rushing back to work especially if short staffed is a big mistake, your body won't be able to cope.

The state of affairs at the moment, it would be very wise to extend until you are fully fit. For your own benefit and others. You will be much more susceptible to "bugs" (we all know what I mean), if you are run down.

Get another sick note. I had an op once where I was expected to be off six weeks - ended up being six months due to complications and then having to take the annual leave I was due before the end of the year!

Shinycat · 12/03/2020 16:31

@welshgirl82 Yes of course get another month, if your GP will do it.

Get well soon. Flowers

welshgirl82 · 12/03/2020 18:09

@Shinycat I think thats what's making me more anxious is that my GP will say I have had enough time off to recover but I just don't feel ready.

This happens all the time. I get a lot of people needing extra time off. I give it. There's no exact day when you suddenly feel better. I'd probably give you 2 or 3 weeks then review you again then see how you were. In this Corona virus climate that consultation would be a joy to me. 😄

Shinycat · 12/03/2020 20:09

I am sure the doc will be OK with extending it @welshgirl82 Good luck. xxx

shiningstar2013 · 13/03/2020 20:28

YANBU I think the problem is with a lot of work places they make you feel guilty for been off sick and people end up going back way to early. If you were told 6 weeks off and then experience complications I think its essential that you have some more time off to recover. Take care of yourself and return when you feel ready Flowers
