Close friend’s birthday today. I asked if she wanted to go out for coffee or anything but she said she’s working a late so going to have a long lie in before work. Fair enough. But a mutual friend just text to say they are having lunch together. I’m not bothered about them having lunch, but I’m a little confused as to why friend lied and why mutual friend felt the need to text me. We are middle aged married women - surely we are too old for this playground type stuff? I’ve messaged friend to say Happy Birthday but I’m unsure whether to mention it next time I see her, which will be Thursday or to just leave it.

You acknowledge she’s a close friend which means it’s unlikely she’s ‘faking’ being friends with you. You asked her about birthday plans and she pretended she already had some. She was actually spending it with another friend. That says to me she’d simply rather keep her plans with the other friend. It doesn’t mean anything other than she was worried about your reaction if she told you she just wanted a coffee with the other friend. Your post suggests you would have taken it badly.

I had a friend do that. Then she voluntarily told me she'd been to see the other friend and hadn't told me about it. I hadn't asked. Just thought she'd lost the plot. I see other friends without her being there - never felt the need to explain or tell lies. I guess, OP, this means we're just not 10 anymore 🤷‍♀️
