I’ve just seen a video of myself. I look enormous. I’m 5’4 and a size 16, I weigh around 13.5 stone.

I didn’t realise how huge I look, in the video I’m eating dinner at a party and I look disgusting. I actually thought I looked ok and loved my dress etc.

Other people must think I’m repulsive.

Please help me what is the best way to get started and stay on it.

1st thing, please stop beating yourself up. If you felt pretty and liked the dress, thats what other people will have picked up on, not your weight and they won't have thought you repulsive.

try following the NHS diet plan. you get a calorie allowance for each meal, so:
Women (allowance 1,400kcal)
• Breakfast: 280kcal
• Lunch: 420kcal
• Dinner: 420kcal
• Other food and drink: 280kca
and you can have any of the meals on the change for life website (they have recipes for breakfast lunch and dinner).if you also get yourself a plate like this, then you can clearly see portion sizes (if you had something like chicken and noodle stir fry then it would cover both the carb and protein section).

in terms of exercise, do you do much currently? if not, start trying to have a walk once a day, for 10 minutes. once you can do this fairly briskly without stopping, up it to 15 mins, then 20 and so on. you could also consider starting to swim? going once or twice a week makes a huge difference to how you feel because it uses loads of different muscles.

all the best x

forgot to say, at the start of each week, look through the change4life website and make a meal plan. stick this up, write a shopping list and buy what is on the list only, nothing more.

I’m 5’2” and a size 20. I’ve joined weight watchers. I’m 40 and sick of being so fat.

I’ve been there 3 weeks and lost 9.5lb

Having lost five stone a few years ago and keeping it off, I feel like the one thing that helps most is having a day off. So, I eat whatever I want on a Friday. This helps when it's Tuesday and I'm dying for something nice...I just tell myself that I can have it on Friday.

OwlinaTree · 13/03/2020 23:03

I lost just over 3 stone on slimming world and kept it off. Really easy and you can make family friendly meals.

Ellisandra · 13/03/2020 23:06

I wouldn’t lose weight on 1400 calories. Age and lifestyle is important here - I’m a menopausal woman in her 50s with a desk job!

There are so many different types of diets, OP. You need to think about what motivates you. Do you like the idea of real life peer support and accountability? Then slimming clubs might be for you.

Everyone has their favourites... personally I find low carb (to the point of keto) really works for me. I would hate anything with “special food” - like meal replacement shakes.

Have you dieted before? What did or didn’t work for you then?

I had the same revelation at the beginning of Feb- I am 5ft7 and weighed 15st2. I thought I was both taller and thinner and was doing a good job lying to myself.
I took advantage of my initial motivation and limited myself to 600-800 calories a day. I increased going to the gym from once a week to four times a week and started walking to the local shop if I needed anything in the evening as it is a 20 minute walk there and back.
Once I lost half a stone (about 3 weeks in) I eased up and increased my calorie allowance to 1200 a day but crucially I am viewing it as a absolute limit and not a target. Most days I'm eating about 800 a day. As of yesterday I've lost just over one stone. :)
The thing that has made the biggest difference this time (rather than the numerous diets/health kicks that have fallen by the wayside over the years) Is that I'm recording all my calories on my phone. I'm also not ruling anything off limits but recording stuff has meant that when I have the 'i want to eat that (whatever)' I look at the calories and judge whether or not it is 'worth It' Just this simple thing has made a massive difference. I highly recommend.

I did similar re calories years ago (though I prefer keto now) and I agree with @karigan - it worked well for me. If I banned something, I’d feel hard done by! Whereas with calorie counting I could say - yeah, go for it, have the Mars Bar. That’ll be your lunch though - are you OK with that? And sometimes I was Grin

MashedSpud · 13/03/2020 23:35

I’m 5ft 9 and to lose I’d have to eat less than 1358 calories, so op wouldn’t lose on 1400.

Get My Fitness Pal app.

OwlinaTree · 13/03/2020 23:39

Well I put those stats into an online calculator and guessed the op was 35.

Her TDEE was 1834, so she would probably lose weight on 1400 a day.

MashedSpud · 14/03/2020 10:27

What activity level did you put in?

I put in the lowest level so there’s less room for accidentally going over.

Sunny4876 · 14/03/2020 13:01

I started Monday doing 16:8 intermittent fasting and MFP allocated 1550 cals but haven't gone over 1200 yet because I run out of time lol and learning to wait til hungry to eat, lost 7lbs in 6 days which i understand is mostly water, i fasting the easiest for me and curbs the binges.
I'm 43 started at 18st 4.5lbs and 5ft 6 bmi 41.1 so classed as morbidly obese.

Marmalady75 · 14/03/2020 13:35

I’m currently reading “The hormone reset diet”. It looks at how various hormone levels can affect weight gain/loss. It tells you how to reset the 7 main hormones over 21 days. I’m 6 days in and have lost 2kg.

OwlinaTree · 15/03/2020 12:51

mashed I put in the lowest level.

Yabadee · 15/03/2020 13:18

I’m getting married next year, so started a diet in the new year.

January I did keto along with working out. Didn’t lose a lb.

February I did vlcd with working out. Didn’t lose a lb.

In March, I said at the start I’m just going to eat normally while I decide what to do next, while working out. By chance, decided to weigh myself and I’ve lost 7lb.

I have an ileostomy so don’t know how much that has to do with it but the body is crazy. You might need to try a few different things to figure out what works for you.
