To hate matching up husband's socks

ValedictoryMessage · 09/03/2020 17:28

I just wear any old socks as long as really similar typedont have to be a pair. No one sees them. Job done.

Husband feels weird if socks aren't matched.

He does 99% of the washing in the house. He has a system and I leave him to it. On the odd occasion I di get involved I feel irrationally annoyed about the sock matching.

He has a scotch of black socks that are identical apart from a different coloured seam. Presumably designed for people like

Am I being unreasonable in just wanting to dump his socks in a heap? .

It's my 5yos job to match the socks. He sits with a weeks worth of socks and a cartoon on then shouts when they are done for me to quickly ball them up. He then runs them to the right rooms.

couldn't imagine wearing odd socks - weird.

About twenty five years ago, I found the perfect black socks, had a couple of dozen pairs, problem solved, until I ran out & only had a few manky worn ones left.
Started the new sock hunt about five years ago - and have just found the holy grail of socks, Only slight problem it that they do come in packs of three, different colours - but if I buy enough packs it will be fine!

Odd socks are fine. Yep, dh finds it very unsettling to have different thickness of socks never mind colours.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz that’s my favourite answer Grin you win at parenting

I'm so glad I've seen this. Nothing frustrates me more and it just puts a downer on my entire day Confused My DH has all black socks but all pairs are different (height, texture, different shades of black if you know what I mean,...) . I just hate it because if it was up to him he would match up the first 2 he can get gold of and then carry on but my OCD strongly disagrees. I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

It's oddly a job I quite enjoy!

Actually I like folding clean washing & I fold socks in a particular way so they are nice & tidy - not messy balls!

My lovely friend was drowning in washing & had 3 (clean) unfolded loads to deal with so we tackled it together. I noticed her watching me & it seems she just puts all pants & loose single socks in a drawer together (seperatated only by family member)! It really bothered me! They weren't even smoothed out!

I'm pretty crap at all other housework though Grin

I see a number of choices here:

  1. suck it up
  2. fold and put away everything but his socks dump place them on his drawers/bedside table in a big mass
  3. dedicate a space in your room for the laying out of socks. Every morning DH gets to find a pair from the sock table - like a mini game of mahjong tiles.
  4. buy him new socks with more exciting colours - even if they are mainly black with coloured soles
  5. buy him new, plain black socks. Grab any two. Pair.
  6. LTB
  7. Kill him. Bury him with all his unpaired socks.

Your choice.

You're welcome.

Ariela · 09/03/2020 22:40

Life is too short to pair socks.
You have a choice: put them all in the same drawer and let him pair them OR ditch all his socks and buy a dozen or so in exactly the same colour - no pairing needed.

TheNoodlesIncident · 09/03/2020 22:44

See, I'm with him on this point. I could wear odd socks no more than I could go to the shops naked. It's just WRONG. (That might be my autism saying that though).

In our house, I have coloured patterned socks, DS has plain black ones for school and coloured stripy ones at the weekend, DH has black socks with the different coloured heel and toes. All easy to match up really (except school socks, they don't need pairing).

Socks that are still balled up through the laundry though... Angry I am NOT unrolling someone else's sweaty socks. Nope nope nope.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 09/03/2020 22:50

Is it just me that has a family sock pile we all dip from ? Blush

DesLynamsMoustache · 09/03/2020 22:54

@WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo Nope! We just have 'socks'. I like to wear DH's as I can pull them really far up Grin We also wear odd socks all the time and don't care. And we don't bother pairing them, they just get chucked in the sock drawer and left to fight it out.

DesLynamsMoustache · 09/03/2020 22:56

Oh and I love Oddsocks (the brand). I get them for us every Christmas

GrolliffetheDragon · 09/03/2020 23:02

I do most of the washing just because I'm around the house more, but I don't put DHs clothes away and I certainly don't match up his socks. Life is too short to match up someone else's nearly identical looking socks.

Msmcc1212 · 09/03/2020 23:11

This post made me laugh. Just the other day, on my own at home, doing the laundry and feeling a bit hard done to, I was muttering under my breath: ‘and you can match your own f-ing socks from now on!’ Not fair of me really as he does his fair share, but I was feeling particularly put upon that day. Feeling your sock pain OP

Hopingtobeamum · 09/03/2020 23:12

@opticaldelusion 😂😂😂

ValedictoryMessage · 10/03/2020 07:12

Burying him with his unpaired socks....

I was feeling hard done by and I shouldn’t .

Did you miss the bit where he does 90% of all the laundry but on the occasions the OP does they can't be bothered?

I did! 😳

Laserbird16 · 10/03/2020 10:05

His socks, his problem

ValedictoryMessage · 10/03/2020 10:21

Yes - he has a whole laundry system. Though he no longer pairs my socks as he realised that I really don't care. But he does care.

And obviously other people care too.

I never knew there were so many shades of black until I was faced with the task of matching up black socks from the wash!
