Something strange happening with banking

belay · 09/03/2020 16:30

My banking app shows cleared and pending transactions. There have been items in pending all day today. That never happens. AIBU to think this could be because of the instability of the stock market ?

Yes. Items go from pending to cleared once the merchant puts it through not at random

StevieSandwich · 09/03/2020 19:12

😂😂😂😂 What has stock market instability got to do with your bank?

PregnantCat · 09/03/2020 19:13

That’s quite normal for me. I’ve often had pending for days at a time. I’m with NatWest.

TSSDNCOP · 09/03/2020 19:15

Have you been buying stuff in sale that’s low stock? You might find that they clear when the items are sourced.

FecktheBoss · 09/03/2020 19:15

I think it's a new thing that all banks have had to do, ie show balance before and after things have cleared. I had an email while back.

AhoyMrBeaver · 09/03/2020 19:16

That's normal, nothing to do with the stock market. Do you really think the bank is holding out to see how markets close before letting British Gas take your direct debit? The world's economy isn't riding on your current account.

Jess827 · 09/03/2020 19:20

This post shows such a lack of understanding about how bank accounts work, and what relationship there is between variables that are influenced by financial market volatility, I don't even know where to begin. Is this post for real?

ffswhatnext · 09/03/2020 19:20

Been that way for ages with both Barclays and hsbc.
It’s handy to know that I still have whatever to still come out. It also alerts me a hell of a lot quicker to things I haven’t bought.

How would the stock market impact this?

mnthrowaway202020 · 09/03/2020 19:26

Sounds like a mere app update has got you paranoid

Carrie7469 · 09/03/2020 19:28

I have accounts with first direct and halifax and both have recently changed to that system

coconuttelegraph · 09/03/2020 19:29

Totally normal for my bank, there's no rule that pending transactions have to clear within the day

ffswhatnext · 09/03/2020 19:39

and Contactless never clear same day. TfL for example stay as pending for a day or so.

TSSDNCOP · 09/03/2020 19:41

TBF ffs if you really stretched you could say a global stock market collapse led to the end of RBS. I’m stretching.

BertiesLanding · 09/03/2020 19:42

Totally normal, and was recently instated in both banks that I use.

envelopeofpubes · 09/03/2020 19:43

Are you... serious??

Splitsunrise · 09/03/2020 19:46

Is this a joke? Genuinely?

milveycrohn · 09/03/2020 19:49

I have noticed before that sums are often held in 'pending'.
ie When I pay my credit card, by logging onto the on-line credit card account. They state it will often take a few days to appear on your bank statement, but if I subsequently log onto my bank account, the sum is held in 'pending'.
Similarly, last year, when I booked up a hotel in a non EU country (with my credit card). The rules clearly stated I could cancel up to 24 hours before. However, a week before, the sum was shown as 'pending'.
It is though the money has been reserved.
Also, when I get paid, I know the payment date is a certain day of the month, but one or 2 days before, the sum is shown as a pending credit.
In otherwords, it happens all the time

VeniVediViciTwice · 09/03/2020 19:49

My bank always shows items pending, it's normal.

Redglitter · 09/03/2020 19:51

🙄 ffs it's nothing to do with the stock market. That's just how banking works

ffswhatnext · 09/03/2020 19:52

I‘d forgotten all about that TSS.
I just have this mad thought that op thinks the money that eventually comes out will depend on the market at the end of the day.

Imagine a world where your bank takes a bit longer to get you the best rate before releasing the funds 🤣 If it exists, where?

The fca changed the rules on how the banks show your balance. It’s to do with changes to overdraft charges & making your balance clearer to avoid going into excess/getting arranged or unarranged overdraft charges.

TheTrollFairy · 09/03/2020 19:55

Have you been stocking up on toilet roll OP?

managedmis · 09/03/2020 19:56

What?

Longdistance · 09/03/2020 19:56

Nothing strange going on.

Nationwide was like that last week, it eventually went through. I wish they’d just bloody well take the money.
