Tiktok driving me mad

Wetfloortiles · 07/03/2020 20:48

I should say, I am a mum to 3 teenagers, and also a secondary teacher, so maybe I'm 'exposed' to it more than most but......tiktok is driving me MAD. It's almost impossible to talk to my children without then doing some stupid tiktok dance whilst talking, or quoting from it. At work, all I see are kids tiktoking at lunch time, or in class, doing a stupid move or dance from it.

It's like a cult!!!!

Do it drive you mad as well?

I hate it. My dd is 11 and wants it as all her friends have it. As a compromise I’ve got it on my phone but her account is locked and she can’t post videos. I hate the bloody app. She’s obsessed with it and some of the content and the dances are hugely inappropriate. I’d love an app like this without the inappropriate dances and the ability to connect with others.

DrWAnker · 09/03/2020 19:29

I'm tots stealing I'm freestyling, that will make DD actual cringe.
It is pretty annoying but also great to get back at them by cutting some fine shapes but never, ever at a school event in front of all the pals

SofiaAmes · 09/03/2020 19:30

Really!!! Are you complaining about kids being active and moving around? Really!!! Of all the rebellious/subversive/unhealthy things that teenagers could be doing and you are complaining about them dancing and being active?

Msgiggles30 · 09/03/2020 20:25

@DianneWhatcock you should be fine if it's all locked down :). Its just that some dont realise that it is set to public at first. People can still add but that's just about educating the children on who they accept and monitoring which you are doing. Commonsensemedia.org is a good source of info for people that arent so clued up - like I wasnt until someone from the high schools came to talk to us about esafety and all the different apps kids are on these days (I'm primary)

Missarad · 09/03/2020 20:40

Think my 10 yr old has lost weight with it lol. Obsessed with it

Knowhowufeel2 · 09/03/2020 20:52

My youngest (15) is obsessed too. She has actually got her dad involved and tried teaching him a few of the dances... now that was painful to watch 😂😂 as he's got no rhythm at all.

Hers is on private settings, but I do worry that they're wasting their lives watching all this crap on SM.

At least it gets her moving though.

DianneWhatcock · 09/03/2020 21:53

@Knowhowufeel2

Yes I think that's what bothers me how they waste their lives watching the utter shit

DD has friends round and they literally sit at opposite sides of her room both on their phones 🙄

I have drastically cut down the time mine are allowed on them for though

Chesntoots · 09/03/2020 22:09

I have no kids and never seen Tiktok, but thanks to this thread I am now massively addicted to Mr P

SofiaAmes · 09/03/2020 22:26

So what did all of you do when you were teenagers that was so much more valid and intellectually promising than watching videos on tiktok and doing dances in the hallways?

Hellshotforgoodreason · 09/03/2020 22:31

I have actually started telling my daughter off for doing the dance constantly! She isn't even aware shes doing it sometimes. May also have told her she looks like Mr Bean when doing it.........

BaronessBomburst · 09/03/2020 22:32

Read Smash Hits, Just Seventeen, and obsessively taped songs from the radio, praying that Bruno Brookes wouldn't start talking before you pressed 'stop'. Grin

Haggisfish · 09/03/2020 22:35

Ra ta ta taaaaa...I’m in the ghetto!! I love the dances but hate the bloody app.

longcoffee · 09/03/2020 23:26

Teenager spends half her life trying to get the dog to comply for tiktok videos. It's never going to happen, he's far too stubborn, but highly amusing to watch. I did comment that she is being continually outwitted by a hairy draught excluder who eats his own poo, but she perseveres, god love her.

SofiaAmes · 10/03/2020 03:21

I have been hosting two quite well known tiktok creator friends of my dd's most weekends (they come to LA to do photography). It's kind of fun seeing it from their end. They are actually fabulous photographers and I'd much rather see them creating content for tiktok and perfecting their craft than hanging out at the mall doing nothing like many of their peers.

@laurenm345 can you please stop bumping all these old threads for your survey? There's a specific survey / petitions section.

I really enjoy enjoy Tiktok although yes, I can waste away hours on it if I'm not careful. Some of the videos are really create. I love the creativity especially the cosplay and the dances. My 18 year old daughter has no interest in any social media of any description but I have been trying to persuade her to do one of the dances with me while we're ahem...'W'FH
I appreciate I don't have to worry about my children on it and might view it more cautiously if I did.
