Help!! Smoke alarm beeping making me go insane!

goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 19:12

We have mains connected smoke alarms. Three in total, one on each floor. They all talk to each other. When you test one they all go off.

The one downstairs is emitting a beep every 45 seconds. The others aren't. It's not the battery. We've changed it for a new one twice. Reset them and it's still beeping. There is mains power going to it. DH has checked the wiring and it's live.

It's driving me insane. I'm losing my patience with it and it's actually making me feel angry because it's messing with my already fragile head.

I shamelessly put this in AIBU for the traffic in the hopes that someone might be able to help me. For 4 days the bastard thing won't shut up!!! I can't take much more of it. What the fuck is wrong with it!?

HELP!!!

Please.

It's

brk 670mbx

If that helps anyone.

That is very odd. If it ain't the battery, then it's faulty!

So tomorrow, go and buy a new one, and rip this one out.

WoofAndWhiskers · 07/03/2020 19:14

Have you hoovered it? Might be dust.

Shinycat · 07/03/2020 19:15

Actually, Homebase is open right now. If you are able to, go see if you can get one tonight. And Wilko and Screwfix sell them too.

UntamedWisteria · 07/03/2020 19:15

If it's not the battery, take the battery out & see if that stops it.

truebeliever · 07/03/2020 19:16

Pheebs? Is that you?

goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 19:16

@WoofAndWhiskers we've recently had a lot of work done in the house with a lot of building dust. But DH covered it. It's only started beeping now, over two months after all the work.

I'll try hoovering it now though. Do I need to press the reset button again after doing so?

The user manual is here brk.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/700-Series-Manual.pdf it suggest gently vacuuming it in the trouble shooting section.

rosy71 · 07/03/2020 19:18

Did you say they are mains connected? They beep when they are reaching the end their lives. You may need to buy new ones.

dementedpixie · 07/03/2020 19:19

How long have you had it? Supposed to replace them every 10 years I think

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 07/03/2020 19:19

Have you reset it after changing the battery?

Mine did this once, took four batteries to get one that worked. I took the battery out in the end as the beeping was driving me mad, but after an hour it set off all the alarms as it’s main wired. It was not good!

I’d either hoover it well or try another battery. Maybe one out of a different alarm?

Sympathies for the noise, I felt like I was going insane.

MakeItRain · 07/03/2020 19:20

Does it need replacing completely? They have a shelf life of about 10 years. I had this recently but it was the battery so I can only think yours must be faulty or coming to the end of its life. Could you replace the whole thing with a new one?

Shinycat · 07/03/2020 19:22

@truebeliever

Pheebs is that you?

www.safelincs.co.uk/replacing-brk-600-and-700-series-smoke-alarms/ we got replacements from this website although ours was a different brand

Longdistance · 07/03/2020 19:24

Ours did this. We replaced the battery, it still bleeped and then out came the Hoover to clean any dust. In the end we replaced it.

callmeadoctor · 07/03/2020 19:24

Take the whole thing off and disconnect it from the system (it will have a wire like a phone connection). Make sure all your others are working though and replace tomorrow (her now)

callmeadoctor · 07/03/2020 19:24

OR now

iMatter · 07/03/2020 19:26

We had this. Bloody nightmare.

We took it apart and used a handheld hoover to clean it and that worked

Every sympathy - it did my head in

goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 19:39

We've taken it apart (off the ceiling fitting) changed the battery for another completely new one out of different packaging, turned the mains off (the ceiling connector is still beeping on the ceiling with no battery and no mains electric going to it though) hoovered it, put it back up, turned the electric back on, reset it and guess what!?

It's STILL FUCKING BEEPING. We've only had them three or four years. Definitely nowhere near 10 years.

goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 19:41

So even if I disconnect the alarm, the base plate is the bit that's still beeping. And even though DH is competent in electrical wiring, it's not something he can do this evening with neighbours and thin walls.

OP posts:
goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 19:41

How is the base plate beeping with no alarm attached to it, no electricity and no bloody battery!?

OP posts:
goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 19:43

They're all working though. Even this one. Looks like we'll be buying new ones probably Monday morning now for the ones we need.

OP posts:
tryingtoloseweightnow · 07/03/2020 19:48

Does it also detect carbon monoxide?

goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 20:18

@tryingtoloseweightnow no it isn't a carbon monoxide alarm.

goodytooshoes · 07/03/2020 20:20

I've found the same alarm on amazon, can deliver tomorrow but not sure if it's radio linked the same as what we have. It has to be radio link not hardwired link. Looking into it a bit more before I click buy.
