...because I can’t bear the thought of Cromwell dying?

The book is sitting here looking at me, but I feel that if I don’t read it, somewhere there is a Schrodinger’s Cromwell training up more apprentices and chatting to Holbein and being quietly brilliant.

I know, IABU...

Ok. Have decided to read 1 and 2 back to back and then head on into 3.

That's what I'm doing.

Started re-reading book one earlier this week and going to keep going until it's all finished.

BadEyeBri · 07/03/2020 18:50

@KingscoteStaff I am. Will most likely be burned

TheWildPlaces · 07/03/2020 18:59

I'm also reading the first two books again before starting TMATL, probably partly to avoid the inevitable!

Just imagine how devastating Mark Rylance is going to be in the final ever episode once they film this one...

Bearfrills · 07/03/2020 19:22

I can't read the books without hearing his voice in my head.

longwayoff · 07/03/2020 19:28

Cromwell and Cummings have a lot in common. No that I'm recommending a beheading but I'm expecting him to have a similar shelf life.

KingscoteStaff · 07/03/2020 19:36

Isn't that interesting - I see Mark Rylance, but I hear the RSC's Ben Miles.

@longwayoff, in fairness, Mantel’s Cromwell dresses far better than Cummings. I mean, TC was never going to rock up at Whitehall in the Tudor equivalent of a Joules gilet and a Sci Foo tshirt. Grin

longwayoff · 07/03/2020 22:04

No argument there, FuchsiaBay, I suspect TC would be far better company as well, albeit briefly.

KingscoteStaff · 08/03/2020 12:47

I'd match Cummings to More, Mandelson to Cromwell

I like the Mandelson comparison, though perhaps Cromwell was more like a Mandelson-Campbell hybrid?

Not sure that Cummings has got the intellectual heft to be More (much as I dislike More), though. And More did die on a matter of principle, whereas Cummings seems to have no principles, other than a desire to destroy.

3rdNamechange · 08/03/2020 15:07

I've read the first chapter, now I'm going to re read the other two first , just don't want them to end Wink

Sypha · 08/03/2020 15:13

I’m reading it now and thinking of going back to WH (for the Nth time) when I’m finished so he’s alive again.

ProperVexed · 08/03/2020 15:24

I've started it with a heavy heart! Cracking idea to resurrect him by re reading Wolf Hall afterwards.

KingscoteStaff · 08/03/2020 16:04

@3rdNamechange - You're going to read books 1 and 2 in between EVERY chapter of book 3??? That is devotion.

Some idiot on Radio 4 last night saying Rees-Mogg to More, Gove to Cromwell!!!!!!!

LOL. In their dreams. Though, to be fair, Grove is propping up a capricious narcissist with multiple wives Wink

3rdNamechange · 08/03/2020 16:37

@KingscoteStaff God no 😂

Zilla1 · 08/03/2020 16:42

(spoilers) I like your thinking, OP. Schrodinger's Jay and Daisy ran away together and had a happy life in Gatsby land.

PennyMissilesAndWombPies · 08/03/2020 16:49

I'm having a re-read of the first two to put off the inevitable!

karigan · 08/03/2020 16:52

I had the exact same thing over Elizabeth Chadwick's books on William Marshal (the greatest knight ans the scarlet lion) I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on him and had read hundreds of books about his life and her fictionalized account of his life was so well written that I slowed down reading the last few chapters as I didn't want him to die. (Obviously making no difference given he lived 800 years ago)
It makes sense to me! :)

KingscoteStaff · 08/03/2020 16:56

Actually thinking about it I still read the 1944 entries in Anne Frank's diary with my fingers crossed...

Shroedinger's Cicero is definitely living out his retirement, happily, in Italy and meets up with Tyro regularly (Imperium trilogy)!
