To have phoned in sick to work?

I've got a really heavy cold. Copious snot, sinus pain, sore throat, and nasty productive cough. I also keep getting toothache (which I think is related to the sinus pain).

I feel like absolute shit. I can hardly speak and just didn't feel up to nine hours of running round after customers.

My boss made me feel like I'm being unreasonable for phoning in. They don't need me. They have plenty of staff to cover but he has made me feel like I'm being a lazy git.

Aibu?

Yanbu. You sound really ill.

BadCatDirtyCat · 07/03/2020 09:55

Yanbu

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/03/2020 09:55

Tell him you are self isolating.

On a serious note- at the present moment no boss should be pressurising staff with cold and flu symptoms to come to work.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/03/2020 09:56

Ewww. Who would want you serving them anyway? Your boss is a minger.

QuestionableMouse · 07/03/2020 10:09

I wouldn't want me serving me. I feel gross.

He seems to have decided that I'm the problem employee recently and he's been picking at everything I do. ☹️ I'm not doing anything differently to what I was before but he does this.

I would moan if you came in and infected me.

Where I used to work 6 different people came in Martyring coughing and spluttering and then I get it and ring in and I’m the bad one.

I made sure my opinion was documented on my return to work from 😋

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/03/2020 10:15

Maybe it’s time to start looking for a different role.

StealthPolarBear · 07/03/2020 10:18

Yanbu at all. How long have you been there and how much time off have you had?

MrsAJ27 · 07/03/2020 10:25

YANBU I did the same thing yesterday...and still feel like shit today!

Your boss is a dick!

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

QuestionableMouse · 07/03/2020 10:28

8 years in June.

I had maybe five shifts off all last year (sickness bug meant I had to take 48 off, then a couple shifts off due to migraines)

I had even less the years before. Not like I ring in sick every month.

Sounds like my boss. He is the one that never has time off ill, as he tells us frequently. Will come in when he is full of cold and obviously really not well. But if we take time off he isn't happy at all. According to him, if he can manage to get in when he isn't well, so should we. It's due to him that we are ill in the first place!!

NeverForgetYourDreams · 07/03/2020 10:35

I'm a business owner and right now I would not want any staff in who have cold symptoms. If it's just a cold they will be back in a few days. But it could be more serious and I wouldn't want my entire workforce off with this virus for weeks as this would mean our business would fold quite quickly.

QuestionableMouse · 07/03/2020 10:36

I used to always go in until I had the flu and fainted getting out of the car at work. Sacred the shit out of me and made me realise that I was pushing myself for no reason because I got a phone call two days later asking when I would be in.

I feel like going out with a cold atm is especially unfair because people are worried about corona virus.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 07/03/2020 11:47

Five days plus this one is a lot of time off sick imo. Maybe he feels the same.

QuestionableMouse · 07/03/2020 12:11

I'm glad I phoned in. Got the runs now which makes me wonder if this is flu rather than a cold 😭😭😭.

It's maybe seven days over the last two/two and a half years. Not too terrible I don't think? Last day of sick was back in September.

fiddledefiddle · 07/03/2020 12:15

It's only a cold. Take lemsip if you can and get on with it?

QuestionableMouse · 07/03/2020 18:12

I wish it was just a cold. My whole face hurts and my voice has totally gone. ☹️

Sounds like my boss...

CheekyMango · 07/03/2020 18:16

Honestly, don't go back until you're 100% otherwise if you are still in and go off again it's a separate record of sickness.

RobinsEggBlue · 07/03/2020 18:44

I had your exact symptoms OP, it lasted for over a month and I ended up getting some antibiotics for sinusitis- I felt like a big baby but the GP said it isn’t just a cold and unlikely to clear on its own. Feel better soon!

QuestionableMouse · 07/03/2020 18:52

Thanks. I'm off until next weekend. Thinking about getting an emergency appointment tomorrow if I still feel like this.

Just had a shower and the amount of crap that came out of my nose was ridiculous 🤢😭☹️

OP posts:
tryingtoloseweightnow · 07/03/2020 18:54

Could be a sinus infection. I was ill for 10 days with one once. Was awful.

BlueEyedPersephone · 07/03/2020 19:00

If you are dealing with customers face to face, I think you made a good call, get well soon

copperoliver · 07/03/2020 19:03

Ignore him. X

QuestionableMouse · 07/03/2020 20:21

Ugh my head is either going to fall off or explode and tbh I don't much care which. ☹️

Off to steam over the sink again.
