Dawn sodding chorus!

I know IANBU!

We live 4 floors up. Penthouse apartment and our bedroom is in the roof of the building.

Twice in a row now I’ve been woken by a dawn chorus. 5.50 yesterday and 5am today.

They must be nested in the guttering or next to our velux. It sounds like one very happy bird telling the world it’s morning.

It’s so loud I thought DH had changed his alarm noise and set it incorrectly yesterday.

Had to decamp downstairs (we have 2 floors) after half an hour of trying to get back to sleep laying with my deaf ear up and a pillow over it.

I don’t think there’s anything I can do except grin and bare it is there?

No, not really, but it won't go on forever. The dawn chorus only goes on for a few weeks in the springtime, and then back to normal. Enjoy the birdsong, or maybe just get earplugs.

cjt110 · 07/03/2020 08:15

I’d enjoy it if it was maybe 6.30am lol

Well that's the Earth for you. Full of birds and other animals.

Perhaps some ear defenders?

fiddledefiddle · 07/03/2020 08:23

Yabu, I love hearing the dawn chorus. It's even my phone alarm

SoloMummy · 07/03/2020 08:30

I loved when I first heard this again in the lats week.
I know that for me, it won't be short lived as life rurally and it will Continue for any months.
The only thing to do is embrace it! I know that for me it means my day will start at around 5am. Which means my evening shifts too.
Spring is on the way!

Mascarponeandwine · 07/03/2020 08:35

Ear plugs, the foam ones from boots muffle the sound just enough to stay asleep.

A bit of an aside, but your home sounds amazing! I’d love a penthouse.

cjt110 · 07/03/2020 08:36

It's a lovely sound. It really is.

Just a little startling when you're not used to it at 5am!

I wonder why the bird has chosen so high up and here to start its day?

We have owls followed by the dawn chorus. It's lovely after the endless winter!

cjt110 · 07/03/2020 08:38

@Mascarponeandwine It's ok. We've lived here 10 years. Don't think we'll ever move. It's usually quiet.. with the exception of The current dawn chorus and a pigeon on the roof space years ago!

I love hearing it. And my alarm is birdsong too.

MitziK · 07/03/2020 09:04

Penthouse? top floor flat

Probably a Blackbird - he needs to be higher for his song to carry and attract all the load Blackbirds/tell other males to back off.

If not a Blackbird, possibly a Robin - both are very, very loud first thing.

That's why I have birdsong as my audible alarm.

It's the best part of the day to hear a bird singing so loudly. downhill all the way afterwards

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 07/03/2020 09:04

I feel your pain Grin Our house backs onto a woodland and a brook so the birds are plentiful and loud at the moment! We get the little birds in the mornings and the tawny owls at night!
As pp have said it only lasts a few weeks while they're desperately trying the drum up some interest in a shag and then it'll be nesting for a while and they should calm down.

cjt110 · 07/03/2020 09:11

@Mitzi It's official title is a penthouse duplex apartment. But yknow... 🤷‍♀️
