Come on, really?
Bloody World Book Day.
Just call it Superhero and Disney Princess Day and have done with it.

And yes Transformers books were about when I was a kid in the 80s....I'm sure there were Barbie books, Thundercats, Rainbow Sprite....etc etc

bookmum08 · 05/03/2020 11:42

1980s Transformers books published by Ladybird.

To think Transformers is not a book!

YANBU world book day does nothing to promote reading. One of the few advantages of now having teenagers is not having to contend with this utter bollocks.

I heard quite a few parents slating kids outfits today I couldn't believe it, I mean get a grip it's a kid having fun who does anyone give a toss. Expect kids to be kind when the adults cant even manage it

Oh, come on, there are definitely Transformers books. If you want to be a pedant about it, I shouldn't have let ds2 go as Oliver Twist- that was originally published in serial parts in a magazine and not as a book.

What does it matter? I read just about anything and I haven't yet found that my ability to enjoy highbrow stuff has been impacted by my also enjoying throwaway supermarket novels. We want kids to read, don't we? Does it matter whether they're reading Transformers books or classics?

Pretty much every popular kids franchise will have a book associated with it. Eg an annual

It's much better for kids to dress up in whatever they fancy than push acceptable/unacceptable books or buy a costume that will be worn once. This isn't a competition to see which mum (it's rarely the Dads) can craft a costume or pick an advanced reading book so their child looks intelligent and cultured.

My ds dressed as a Minecraft character one year and Dr Who another year. They are more famous amongst kids for being a computer game and tv programme but there are books and this is primary school.

One year another school had everyone dress like Where's Wally characters. Does anyone read the text on each page?

Also it's so fucking unfair on parents who can't afford to buy extra stuff....surely at least a costume is better than letting your kid miss out/ be the one left out.

WBD assumes that every kid has a parent that can afford/has the mental headspace/ ability to make a costume..

What about kids whose parents are mentally/physically unwell??

Or on benefits??

Or eating from food banks??

What does being fucking snobby about parents doing their best do??

@Floribundance no, he’s still reading paddington and peter rabbit, never heard Neil Gaiman (but he will, I shall ensure it) - the potato thing is an instruction from school.

@Twinkletoes888 he has no clue why. He just hoped he could have one big enough to fill his classroom and turn it into mash 🤷🏻‍♀️

“ But so many people are proud of not reading, not liking books, that reading is boring and boasting about putting a tv in the bedroom of a 3 year old “

And so many people never miss an opportunity to show off about how bookish they/their dc are and stay up half the night creating historically accurate hand tailored vintage tweed mr toad plus fours and the like, all to stick on the gram or their crappy blog. So what? Anyone who confuses liking a specific leisure pursuit with having an actual personality is a complete wanker imo, no matter what the pursuit is.

Isthistrueor · 05/03/2020 12:06

Most superheroes did start in comic books tbf (if not all of them) and a few of the Disney princesses derive from old folk tales.

Floribundance · 05/03/2020 12:11

Paddington rocks. He’s got years to discover all the brilliant books that are out there.

My 2 went in football kits today with books about football. They were happy. It cost me nothing. They are both avid readers and read lots of different books and the literary snob in me would
much rather they had chosen a character from a classic. But I recognise that as my issue and let them crack on with what they wanted to wear and the books that they chose. Can't see why people get so worked up about it.
