Come on, really?
Bloody World Book Day.
Just call it Superhero and Disney Princess Day and have done with it.

I used to dress up as Darth Vader Grin the movies came before the Extended Universe books

hazeyjane · 05/03/2020 11:10

My favourite costume was a year 1 girl in a full on beauty pageant style crinoline, make up and heels. When I asked who she was she showed me the copy of Gone With The Wind she was carrying...I'm pretty sure she hadn't read it...or seen the film! At least the 100 Elsa's and Arrrna's know who they are.

As for the 'mind your language' post, I love language, all of it, the facund and the filthy, in the same way I love books...graphic novels, comic books, fact and fiction, poetry and prose.

BestZebbie · 05/03/2020 11:11

We've just worked our way through a whole box of Transformers phonics "reading scheme" type books....

Floribundance · 05/03/2020 11:12

It would be a good opportunity to get local authors in to read from their work (I’m sure some schools do.)

AriadnesFilament · 05/03/2020 11:12

The other child has had to take a potato.

I confess the potato has me confused.....

Livpool · 05/03/2020 11:13

My DS has gone to preschool as Thor. He wanted to wear it and I didn't think it was a big deal. At 4 he doesn't really understand about World Book Day and I don't feel the need to force him into something he isn't interested in or spend more money.

I'd a bit 🤷🏼‍♀️ about the whole thing

Sux2buthen · 05/03/2020 11:13

Whatever makes my child excited for school works for me.

Balkinfly · 05/03/2020 11:14

Grin You take it that seriously that you notice what other DC are wearing! Wow

awesomeaircraft · 05/03/2020 11:15

YABU. Star Trek and Star Wars also have book and graphic novels. There is a whole publishing genre there.

PristineCondition · 05/03/2020 11:16

God, who cares?!?!

Floribundance · 05/03/2020 11:17

Neil Gaiman wrote Norse Mythology a few years ago so that makes your DS a very advanced reader Wink

Floribundance · 05/03/2020 11:19

‘The other child has had to take a potato.’

A Pratchett fan?

Twinkletoes888 · 05/03/2020 11:20

@BiscuitBarrels we’ve had to do potatoes too and WBD dress up not sure what the potato thing is all about this year???

I’ve seen some random ones this morning, however I do get annoyed at all this dress up etc as it puts pressure on parents who can’t spare the money etc, can’t kids just bring in their favourite book?

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 05/03/2020 11:21

no one said transformers wasn't a book, the point is most kids will only know them because of the cartoons and toys or the movies...

Same with Harry Potter. Many kids absolutely love the books, but many more haven't read a line and know only of the movie....

SwishSwishSheesh · 05/03/2020 11:22

I was mightily pissed off when my DD's school introduced dress-up for WBD this year. It's bullshit. Why not just ask kids to bring their favourite book or take them to the library etc. Otherwise it's a farce.

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 05/03/2020 11:24

This thread is brilliant.

Transformers is a legit comic/book, as well as a TV program/film.
DS loves all of it.

Also......
Graphic novels are a valid form of "decent" literature.....
You know that Neil Gaiman, author of some of the best books/episodes of Doctor Who/worked with Terry Pratchett.....wrote brilliant books....inc.American Gods, Good Omens etc...
He also writes "comics" and The Sandman series of graphic novels is the best thing I've ever read.

I home ed......so I thought I'd get away with it......but one crazy person in our home ed group suggested doing a book day today and we were all like "nah...fuck that shit...our kids wear stupid shit most of the time anyway!" Grin

DropYourSword · 05/03/2020 11:24

no one said transformers wasn't a book

.... it’s literally the title of the thread Confused

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 05/03/2020 11:29

but you know that it's not the "book" that explains why the theme is chosen don't you

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 05/03/2020 11:30

Floribundance hah!!

Another Gaiman fan....brilliant, nerdy x posts.

DropYourSword · 05/03/2020 11:31

Do you?
I certainly don’t. I have no clue what that child reads. I only know what me and my child read!

Hereforthenamethreads · 05/03/2020 11:33

They are kids. It is a dress up day. They can dress up as any character they want or not dress up if they prefer.

Limpshade · 05/03/2020 11:34

Well, then I guess you'd judge me for sending my 3yo in as Dora the Explorer.

Never mind that she enjoys the books (she's autistic and they're the only books she'll currently read), that I spent hours putting together a costume, and - for the first time ever - she wore something that she wasn't used to wearing. And happily, without us both having a breakdown at the front door at 8am.

Never mind all that. It's having the intellectual high ground that's important, right?

bookmum08 · 05/03/2020 11:34

Transformers books have been around since the 1980s. I think some were published by Ladybird.

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 05/03/2020 11:37

Michael Rosen reckons that letting kids read what they want and not being snobby about it actually helps them get into reading other stuff.....sooooo....I'm inclined to go with the best children's author in the world (imo)

Ihatesocialmedia · 05/03/2020 11:40

Our school said no superheroes costumes for some reason.... well the amount of kids wearing one this morning!!! We dont have the money or the time to buy anything else, people use what they have. I wish the stupid dress up days would fuck off
