Hi. Our family takes a daily multi vitamin. Would it be safe to take an additional vitamin c tablet?

Yes

However the actual evidence of its utility is slight. The Pauling Institute found it might shorten the duration of a common cold by a day or so, but made no difference to whether or not you catch one.

I'm not aware of whether there is any evidence for usefulness for other grounds s of diseases

But unless you are going for utterly crazy megadoses, you'll do no harm

According to the NHS site the only side effect of too much vitamin C is that it might you stomach pain, diarrhoea and flatulance.

Here is the page: www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-c/

Depends on the dose contained within the multivitamin, but usually yes it is most likely safe though can cause gastro issues in higher doses.

If this is as a result of coronavirus concern though as above there is no evidence vitamin c will make any difference, the tests being done in China that have hit the news involve IV mega doses of , and that is within the context that their RDA is already tens of times higher than the UK RDA. It is not even the same kettle of fish, RDA here for a woman is 75mg. The test amount currently being trialled on covid19 patients as part of one trial is 24 GRAMS via infusion for a week.

Bolstering immunity via supplementation isn't a quick fix or reliable and is of most benefit to those who are malnutritioned. With that said OP if it's easily affordable and provides placebo, what's the harm. Just don't overdo it thinking it will swing it either way.

If it's Vit C it's fine. It's water soluble so your body just gets rid of the amount it doesn't need in urine.

Fat soluble vitamins like Vit E are a different matter. They can't be easily excreted and it can be dangerous if you take many times over the RDA.

I’d at vitamin D rather than C, that’s the one that is the latest buzz for warding off bad health

I started taking vitamin D tablets, after a run of bad coughs and colds, and have definitely had better health since.
