I appear to have touched a nerve

Not a TAAT just a question.

Why is it that when people post "I appear to have touched a nerve" a) I imagine them smugly folding their arms and nodding to themselves that they've shown everyone on the thread up and b) it's only used by people spectacularly missing the point or behaving atrociously?

I genuinely don't think I've ever come across it on here without it being used in the context of "I can't find anything else to hammer my point across so I'll simply accuse you of bitterness".

Can we ban it? And head tilts, too?

Yanbu.
And, it embarrassingly, has the exact opposite effect than the desired superiority.
It basically is short hand for 'ok, you've won that, but I don't want to admit it'

Yes, that's exactly how it comes across! I honestly can't imagine using it in real life at all unless I wanted to deliberately upset someone!

It’s so cringeworthy- Reminds me of something Simon from Inbetweeners would say before pushing his glasses up his nose, after delivering a shite ‘burn’.

Sagradafamiliar · 04/03/2020 18:15

Grin 'ooooh touched a nerve there, have I, hmmm'

Yanbu!

Igotthemheavyboobs · 04/03/2020 18:19

I have only ever said it about myself (I'm sorry I got upset, you really touched a nerve there, that sort of thing) but when I read it on here I think the same as you. Yanbu

I've seen an OP or PP go off on one when someone has seen the core issue that the OP or a PP doesn’t want to see. Are some smug about it? Maybe.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 18:43

Yanbu people who say that are always irritating
