To think a Sun journalist should not have sent me a PM because I'm on a thread?

And to ask you how to flag this up to MNHQ.

"Hello!

Hope you are really well. I am a journalist working on a story for The Sun about people who are stockpiling due to the coronavirus outbreak. I noticed in your comment you are keeping a small stockpile just in case - I wondered if you would mind giving me a little bit more info about what you have decided to stock up on, and how much you have stored?

Best wishes
Ellie"

I get it now and again. I either ignore or direct them to MNHQ which has a journo policy.

Herpesfreesince03 · 04/03/2020 15:30

@sirfredfredgeorge you’re onto something here 😂 maybe we can help the op with a reply. Something daft but not so ridiculous that it’s unbelievable, try and get it published

Newjez · 04/03/2020 15:31

Two hundred tubes of anusol because scummy sun journalist are a pain in the arse.

Abraid2 · 04/03/2020 15:35

now I know you need a pretty cabinet for the first, but where you do store handbags?

:))

MrsFogi · 04/03/2020 15:36

To the Sun journalist - I'd be happy to let you have a list of the contents of my cupboard for £500 (payment up front) Grin. Photos available but will cost extra.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 04/03/2020 15:37

They won’t print your story unless you also tell them you like to romp with your sexy neighbour in amongst the tins of beans.

DirtyTicket · 04/03/2020 15:46

All S*n journalists are cunts. JFT96.

MarieQueenofScots · 04/03/2020 15:49

I wouldn't even admit to working for The Sun if I was a journo so kudos to "Ellie".

GregoryGrainog · 04/03/2020 15:49

I got it too.... thinking up a smart arse answer. It's taking me a whileBlush

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 04/03/2020 15:56

I still fail to see what the big deal is?

WorraLiberty · 04/03/2020 15:59

And to ask you how to flag this up to MNHQ.

I've had about 3 over the last few years and I just clicked 'report message' from my inbox.

I use desktop though. Are you using the app and if so, is there no report button? Confused

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/03/2020 15:59

It happened to me over the "cancel the cheque" thread and I found the answer was to just ignore them all

Presumably the journos must register with MN or they wouldn't be able to send PMs, but it's a free world I guess and HQ aren't likely to mind when newspaper articles are directing more attention to the site - after all, on a free public forum we're the product

GloriaMumsnet · 04/03/2020 16:01

Hi everyone, thanks for alerting us to this thread. You can always report a PM to us on the PM page itself.
In case no one is aware, journalists and media outlets contacting members directly is against TG, as otherwise we'd be flooded with them.
Thanks again!

CatChant · 04/03/2020 16:03

It's a perfectly polite message, not a personal attack. You can reply to it or ignore it as you wish. I don't see why you feel it necessary to take umbrage. You did, after all, choose to post the information about your stockpile on a public forum.

Where do you think the stories come from that you read in the newspapers or online, or watch on the television news?

Mary1935 · 04/03/2020 16:09

I’d ask her how much she was prepared to pay for such information.

Marmunia1975 · 04/03/2020 16:20

As a former journalist, this is something that is part of the job requirements unfortunately, and that includes contacting people related to crash victims etc...

ImportantWater · 04/03/2020 16:24

I'm a journalist, often cover issues around education that people comment about on here, and often wish I could DM people when they say something that is directly relevant to a feature - but I don't, because I know it is against the rules. If I really wanted to, I would contact Mumsnet directly or start a thread in the specific journalist section (which nobody ever looks at, but hey).

SecretWitch · 04/03/2020 16:24

I was contacted once to fill in the details of a post I’d made. I said “No thanks” and moved on.

I also had a post show up in a click baity article on BuzzFeed. I was really weirded out by that. Thankfully, I never use my real name in any forum I’m on.

Thinkingabout1t · 04/03/2020 16:32

Why not reply with a polite "No, thanks" or just ignore it?

Umberta · 04/03/2020 16:40
  1. Yabu for stockpiling. There's no need and it selfishly hogs resources that other ppl need.
  2. Yabu for thinking that when you post, it isn't public.
  3. Yabu (and many others on this thread ABU) for being so holier-than-thou about journalists. I hugely value the free press in this country for holding the authorities to account and keeping us informed. Ok, the Sun isn't the best example. But still, journalists are an important part of a well functioning society.
Just don't reply and get over it.
Lweji · 04/03/2020 16:40

You can report the message directly to MNHQ. It's on a button above the message.

TryingToBeBold · 04/03/2020 16:43

Condoms!

Apparently people are using them over their fingers when they touch things..

DishingOutDone · 04/03/2020 16:45

I think this is a missed opportunity to make a massive list of crap as suggested by PP, there could be some sort of prize for the most unlikely thing stockpiled? I wouldn't win it though, all I can think of is fork handles.

Lweji · 04/03/2020 16:46

Apparently people are using them over their fingers when they touch things..

What size condom is that? Hmm

DishingOutDone · 04/03/2020 16:46

Oh and obviously we would need said Sun journo to print it. Wouldnt be that much fun otherwise. Oh and hoes. We need hoes.
