Dave's Brits Performance

I personally loved it. I had goosebumps watching it and I loved hearing the audience's positive reaction. It highlights how much racism is still around and how far we have to go. Even added in about our Prime Minister being racist and the blatant difference in the treatment of Meghan and Kate. "The least racist is still racist" was one of my favourite lines.

However, over 200 complaints calling Dave racist! What do you think of the performance?

YABU: they're right to complain his performance was racist.

YANBU: they were wrong to complain his performance wasn't racist.

Black people can be as racist as white people and women can be sexist.

I never said they couldn't. They are not remotely comparable however to the socially entrenched, generations-deep racism and sexism experienced by people of colour and women.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 04/03/2020 18:21

Yanbu - It wasn’t racist at all.
I didn’t enjoy it as I didn’t find it pleasant to listen to in the slightest but a lot of the black boys I teach said the sentiments really resonated with them.

Asimovsfutureishere2020 · 04/03/2020 18:25

Very powerful and articulate. Said what I imagine a lot of people have been feeling.

Thought the visuals, piano, performance and tone were fantastic.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 04/03/2020 18:38

Same

Not in a sistine chapel way though, I kept it quiet Grin

Gosh his performance gave me goose bumps and made me cry. Incredible - like others have said a work of art.
Anyone complaining about him must be a thick racist.

ThisIsTheGreatestShow · 04/03/2020 19:28

So so powerful. Absolutely brilliant performance; articulate, moving, and mesmerising. In short I thought it brilliant. I may have mentioned that!

QuiQuaiQuod · 04/03/2020 19:40

If he was white ranting about a black politician hed be called a racist...but its ok cos hes black and Johnson is white????? Hmm

its not okay (it never is) for a whote person to be raxcist but okay the other way no?

BTW IM mixed race and I get more remarks from my 'white' side than black.

MrsHandles · 04/03/2020 19:43

Totally agree. Got his message across in a beautiful way. Visually stunning; outstanding performance in my opinion.

Neighneigh · 04/03/2020 19:49

I stopped in my tracks - haven't watched the Brits since about 1997 and was about to turn over when it came on. It was quite incredible and I'd recommend you watch it on YouTube if you haven't seen it. Aside from the lyrics and how it was delivered (and the finish!!!) the artwork was incredible

Chienloup · 04/03/2020 20:07

Yes, it's beautiful.
People who say it's racist don't like the idea of black people having a voice and speaking their truth. We've had white people's versions of life represented in every genre forever, but when black people start making their voices heard it makes white people feel uncomfortable, and so is called racism.

strawberrylipgloss · 04/03/2020 20:15

Reckon 4 of the complaints were from Dominic, Boris, Carrie and his Dad Wink

I first heard about Dave when he invited a super fan (Alex) on stage at Glastonbury which I thought was really cool for Alex.

I totally forgot about that viral video until the Brits performance and thought- wow!

I'm going to ignore the brother issue because I don't know about it but I reckon that this is an iconic performance that people will talk about in years to come.

It was an elegant and eloquent explanation of his life as a black man

Asimovsfutureishere2020 · 04/03/2020 20:20

I don't think white culture/thinking has fully accepted the reality of black history, especially around men.

I read a really powerful story about a woman in Ireland who had an affair with a young African student. When she found out she was pregnant she said he had attacked her. It was only years later that she admitted that it had been a consensual, loving relationship and only because her child needed to know the truth. That poor man had to carry that stigma because she wouldn't acknowledge her behaviour.

Asimovsfutureishere2020 · 04/03/2020 20:21

Happened back in the 60s I think and it was in NI, not Ireland (if I remember the story correctly).

The stabbing was in 2010, Justanotherlurker, you didn't hear about Dave because of that. He was 12.

I loved it.

HeresMe · 04/03/2020 22:14

Idiot name for a rapper , it's hardly Beyonce ect ,

The hypocrisy of Stormzy, Dave ect, is complaining how racist everyone is, but is successful despite that. Hmmm.

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 04/03/2020 22:18

Dave is his actual name.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 04/03/2020 22:26

How on earth is it hypocrisy?

There are racist people in the uk

Stormzy and dave have succeeded Despite racism

And whats wrong with Dave? Obviously felt that he didn’t need to change his name

stopbeingadinosaur · 04/03/2020 22:33

@heresme excellent point, naming two successful black people does indeed prove racism is not a real thing.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 04/03/2020 22:38

QuiQuaiQuod He called Boris Johnson racist, which there is evidence for.

HeresMe That isn't the norm though is it. Black people face more struggles and prejudices and have to work harder to achieve the same results. Then we're expected to be grateful for any tiny snippet of equality.

Justanotherlurker a piano playing is music so why the need for inverted commas?

Nothing to do with black people just saying what a crap name Dave is , surely he's more creative than that.
