Apparently "Bitch" is a synonym for Woman.

It makes me wary of relying too much on the dictionary definition of woman if it also says things like that.

The oxford dictionary doesn't make up and choose definitions of words , they are added and explained by usage in society . Just because you wouldn't use that term or are offended by it does not justify its removal . People are nuts

I don't have access to Oxford dictionaries online so looked at Cambridge one instead. It gave the following, which all sounds perfectly reasonable to me without the need of the phrases and words that the Oxford one apparently has
an adult female human being:
She's a really nice woman.
A woman and two men were arrested the day after the explosion.
Women first got the vote in Britain in 1918.
She is Ireland's first woman (= female) president.

I don't buy that EJ, if someone looks up "bitch" then it's correct for the definition to mention it is a derogatory word used about women, as well as the female dog stuff. But when you look up "woman" why does there need to be a list of derogatory words? And is the same done for other words - dick, prick etc are only ever used for men ime so do they appear in the definition of man?

Iambloodystarving · 04/03/2020 17:38

exactly Through, I don't buy that either EJ. For men they have “a person with the qualities associated with males, such as bravery, spirit, or toughness”.

So why not "a person with the qualities associated with females"? Like ability to give birth to other humans would spring to mind. Lots of things spring to mind and none of them are "bitch", "wench" or the rest...
