To ask if you are in your 40’s and feel full of energy what your secret is?

I have just turned 44 and honestly feel about 80 right now. I have 2 pre teenagers and have been on anti depressants for a year which has helped a lot but my energy levels are rubbish and often feel unwell. I’m due a colonoscopy next week which I’m feeling really stressed about. I have a friend the same age as me who is expecting twins soon, who works full time, has 2 teenagers and looks about 25. If you look young for your age and have lots of energy what is your secret? I’m slim and take some exercise but could do more. My diet is not too bad either.

Eating a keto diet, taking magnesium and vitamin d supplements have helped me enormously.

AquaFaba · 04/03/2020 19:59

Following with interest. Complex B vitamins have helped me a lot.

VeryLittleOwl · 04/03/2020 20:02

Low carb diet and lots of water. If I eat bread, pasta or chocolate I get sluggish and depressed.

Mummadeeze · 04/03/2020 20:04

I gave up dairy and eggs due to an allergy two years ago and I have felt wonderful ever since. I also did the couch to 5k and now run a few times a week. I intersperse this with Zumba and other classes at the gym. I only drink alcohol now on special occasions, maybe once every couple of months. I don’t stay up too late either. My life is not v exciting but it is balanced and I feel healthy and well. Sorry to hear that you are going through a tough patch.

Daria32 · 04/03/2020 20:05

Exercise! Weights and lots of outdoor exercise- cycling/ running. I start to feel sluggish if I haven’t done anything for a few days. Also low carb diet

Daria32 · 04/03/2020 20:05

Also, check your B12 and iron levels

zafferana · 04/03/2020 20:06

Exercise, good diet, plenty of sleep and HRT.

A low processed carb and low sugar diet.

Take a multi vit and mineral supplement.
Outside exercise, even just walking.

However if you are going into the peri-menopause you will feel knackered. Your hormone levels might be changing.

I'm in my 50's and have come through it and my energy levels are back.

HathorX · 04/03/2020 20:08

Less stress, more fresh air and exercise. Less red meat and cut out dairy.

Very hard to make big changes but worth it.

ScrapThatThen · 04/03/2020 20:22

HRT
Exercise
Good diet

I'm a similar age with a toddler and I totally feel you!
Pre-child I used to look a lot younger than I am (to the point I got ID'ed regularly, one memorable occassion on a rare visit to a pub with friends. I was refused service as I didn't have any ID on me - I was 38 at the time!) and be fit and average weight. Now I'm a perpetually tired fat bitch that has aged about 20 years.

If I was child free I'd be able to sleep more than 3 hours in a row (toddler has never ever slept through the night. Max block of sleep was just over 4 hours), exercise regularly and eat much better. I probably could eat better but the toddler would refuse to eat it, DH wouldn't be impressed either and it's a PITA cooking more than 1 type of meal in an evening.

Lucky to inherit good genes (3/4 GP lived to their 90s, as did the twin of the 4th) so have always had good health, stable family background so no mental health issues, highly educated and high income so able to spend time and money on the following: lots of fruit and veg, daily exercise, no smoking, moderate alcohol consumption.

36degrees · 04/03/2020 20:30

Low carbs, low sugar, taking vitamin D and iron. Hardly ever drink alcohol or eat out, don't smoke. Working part time in a mostly stress-free role, making time for exercise, choosing to stick with just one child, fortunate to have no other caring responsibilities.

I feel about 10 years younger than I did 2 years ago, before major lifestyle changes came into play.

britinnyc · 04/03/2020 20:34

No sugar. Makes a world of difference in how I look and feel (although I do still have a bit of red wine). Yoga has also made a difference in my mental state and how my body feels.

FickleTickle · 04/03/2020 20:38

Vitamin D3. It comes in a spray. And drink enough water.

Rocketpants50 · 04/03/2020 20:40

Early 40s def felt sluggish, would get to 2.30pm and need a snooze before school pick up. Now mid 40s, try not to eat processed carbs and eT generally much healthier, drink lots of water, exercise a lot, got a dog so have to be out in the fresh air . Have a lot more energy and feel so much better. Have never run in my life and now doing 5k park runs, lots of support and makes you feel more alive. I go to bed tired but that's because I am rather than just feeling sluggish.

Msmcc1212 · 04/03/2020 20:40

Could be perimenopausal? Totally with you on this and am appreciating reading ideas.

Dozer · 04/03/2020 20:41

Exercise, not drinking much alcohol. Vegetables!

SlB09 · 04/03/2020 20:48

"Now I'm a perpetually tired fat bitch that has aged about 20 years"
@AddressLabel literally hit the nail on the head Grin

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 04/03/2020 20:49

Anti-ds made me feel really tired. Not a reason not to take them if they help you though x

isittooearlyforgin · 04/03/2020 20:49

Wine

Clockonmantlepiece · 04/03/2020 20:55

Lying buggers on this thread.
I will tell you the truth:

Subtle botox and fillers.

Literally so many people do it now that it's almost as normal as washing your hair.
I've just started botox recently and I feel 10 years younger already.
And people are treating me better and more respect at work which are just bonuses ☺
I no longer look permanently cross and sad and tired.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 04/03/2020 20:55

I walk everywhere, take oil of evening primrose, berocca and iron sachets every day .
I rarely drink , don't smoke and I try to eat healthily.
I look and feel younger than 44 and have plenty of energy but it's a very boring life haha

scoobydoo1971 · 04/03/2020 20:55

I feel half-dead most of the time, due to a host of genetic conditions. However, I do feel better when I don't drink alcohol at all for a couple of weeks, and drink lots of water. I wish they would invent a pill for energy. Try not to worry about your forthcoming procedure. I had one a few years ago, and so has my mother at 81, and it wasn't as bad as you might imagine. You can ask for sedation if you wish. The pre-med clear out is probably the worst bit, and fingers crossed your inners will be fine.
