I have just turned 44 and honestly feel about 80 right now. I have 2 pre teenagers and have been on anti depressants for a year which has helped a lot but my energy levels are rubbish and often feel unwell. I’m due a colonoscopy next week which I’m feeling really stressed about. I have a friend the same age as me who is expecting twins soon, who works full time, has 2 teenagers and looks about 25. If you look young for your age and have lots of energy what is your secret? I’m slim and take some exercise but could do more. My diet is not too bad either.

I tell people I'm eating well when they compliment me.

Northernsoullover · 04/03/2020 20:58

I'm 48 soon. Last year I gave up booze completely. Its been amazing. I have so much more energy (I don't know if you drink OP). I'd recommend it to anyone who drinks regularly even if you don't think its excessive.

Samtsirch · 04/03/2020 21:36

Not everyone can afford Botox or fillers though, or feels brave enough to try them!
I definitely think diet and exercise helps, both physically and psychologically.Over Christmas I felt and looked as though I had aged 10 years due to overindulgence in alcohol and junk food and not keeping up with my walking and exercise bike.2 months on I am back to my healthier lifestyle, low carb, loads of water, lots of sleep and moderate exercise, and am definitely feeling/ noticing the benefits.

MellowBird85 · 04/03/2020 21:39

@Clockonmantlepiece speaks the truth Grin

I'm 50, but feel full of energy. I've come out the other side of the menopause, I stopped drinking and smoking 2 years ago. My children are older 22&16, and I'm divorced. I eat reasonably well, and get lots of exercise and fresh air. I take vitamin D in winter, and I'm not frightened to have a nap if I'm knackered and have time ( up early before work for horse) I try to find balance in my life. I don't have any other caring responsibilities as sadly my mum, dad, and sister died a few years ago. But I'm out of the other side of a horrendous time, and feeling pretty good!

ComeAlive · 04/03/2020 21:53

Good quality probiotic
Vitamin d supplement
Cut out gluten
Reduce dairy intake

I’m delighted with the changes I am feeling (and looking)! Two children under 4 and at last I have my energy back.

misskick · 04/03/2020 22:00

Antidepressants made me feel exhausted. I dont take them for that reason I simply cannot function day to day whilst taking them.

Fidgety31 · 04/03/2020 22:01

I’m 44 now and don’t smoke anymore but I do drink far too much alcohol every weekend !
I still look younger than a lot my age but I think it’s just genetics tbh .

OhioOhioOhio · 04/03/2020 22:02

Getting divorced!

ColourMeExhausted · 04/03/2020 22:05

Hard to say. Just turned 40 over here and am perma-exhausted. But I do have small pre school age DC who both still wake up at night. And a full time job, and no childcare help outside of nursery. So yes, I accept these are not my best years health/energy wise!

That said, I do a lot of exercise whenever I can and that helps enormously. My mostly sugar diet does not, but I'm working on it... I'm really not

BeardedMum · 04/03/2020 22:05

I am 48 (I think or 47🤔) and get my energy from daily exercise and walking lots in the countryside and by the seaside at the weekends. I eat a normal diet and probably drink too much. Exercise is what makes it a difference for me.

vitaminC · 04/03/2020 22:05

I've never smoked, drink sensibly and eat pretty much only fresh, home-cooked foods (except on the odd day I'm pushed for time and eat in the staff canteen at work).
I make sure I eat fresh fruit and vegetables at every meal. I'm also careful to drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

I will be honest, though, and say a big part of looking younger is good genes. My mum is in her 70s and looks around 60. My grandma passed away at 86, but people thought she was in her 60s.

As for energy, I think the most important thing for me is getting enough down time to recharge. I work a crazy shift pattern, but I make sure that I get at least one day a week just to live at my own pace, with no commitments. If I have to give up my me-day I really feel the difference!

Geekster1963 · 04/03/2020 22:06

Exercise for me. I don’t do loads but I will go for a run three or four days a week and walk on the others. I feel more energetic when I do, it helps me sleep well too. I feel far more sluggish on the days when I haven’t been outside.

QueSera · 04/03/2020 22:11

Exercise - brisk walking, zumba class, home weights, youtube Yoga with Adrienne. Healthy vegan foods. Getting 7hrs sleep (a struggle). Water and green tea.

DirtyRotter · 04/03/2020 22:13

Green tea for me. It has about a third as much caffeine in as coffee so I can drink it throughout the day to perk me up, without getting the massive hit coffee gives me.

covilha · 04/03/2020 22:19

Co enzyme Q10 is really helpful for me

DirtyRotter · 04/03/2020 22:21

@covilha

Have you tried Ubiquinol? I read that as you get older you need co enzyme Q10 in a purer form.

flingo · 04/03/2020 22:23

I don't drink, limit caffeine and I get good amounts of sleep. Also walk everywhere.

Buttybach · 04/03/2020 22:24

For me it's ADHD and a penchant for full fat Coca Cola!

Thebishopofbanterbury · 04/03/2020 22:28

41 and doing ok! Don't drink, only when out which isn't that often with a 4 year old and 13 year old! Go to bed early, try and eat well, have as much sex as poss, walk/run everywhere. Taking St John's wort daily has also helped with the horrendous peri pmt/moodswings I was getting each month.

Thebishopofbanterbury · 04/03/2020 22:29

as others said, minimal caffeine, just have peppermint tea and one cup of green tea a day too..

Tempnamelady · 04/03/2020 22:35

49, DS away from home at uni.I exercise 5 x a week, eat pretty well. Good work life balance ( FT but WFH 3 days). Strong female friendships and the gym are my saviours as my husband is suffering MH issues which I find draining ( and baffling tbh).

TowerRingInferno · 04/03/2020 22:38

48

Have much more energy than I ever used to.

Exercise is key for me. Long and brisk dog walks every day, HIIT class three times a week, lots of gardening. If I don’t exercise for whatever reason (cHrstmas, summer holidays) I feel rubbish!

IdblowJonSnow · 04/03/2020 22:53

Watching with interest. I do loads but feel very blah most of the time and always shattered because of needing to wee in the night. Anyone got any tips regarding that please? I only drink decaf tea and dont drink much.
Diet is ok, possibly could be a bit better.
44 and in perimeno I think.
Delighted to hear energy levels can returning 50s!
