Rome trip March 15th.. am I crazy ?

I booked and fully paid for a trip to Rome for my birthday in a 5 star hotel and business class flights and was really looking forward to the whole experience... more and more people are telling me to cancel.. the airline that I took the whole package out with will not refund me obviously and can refund under half what I paid if I decide to cancel .. it’s a lot of money to lose.

I’m under 50, healthy and have no existing health issues but I have children that are not travelling with me but obviously I will come home too.. I don’t know what to do.

Watching this as we are in same position. Honeymoon at End March. Sad

Frenchfancy · 02/03/2020 12:25

Go and enjoy yourself. Wash your hand regularly. Rome isn't a high risk area. You might even get to enjoy rome without too many tourists.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 12:25

I think it's very foolish. People shouldn't be travelling for leisure reasons atm.

Rosecatter · 02/03/2020 12:26

Rosecatter · 02/03/2020 12:26

@HasaDigaEebowai really?

ParisInTheSpringtime · 02/03/2020 12:27

Go! It will be lovely and much quieter than normal.

ForInfoOnly · 02/03/2020 12:27

I'd go

Alsohuman · 02/03/2020 12:27

Go. I have a friend who lives in Rome. It’s virus free and she says there are fewer tourists than she’s ever seen. It’s actually the perfect time to go.

caperplips · 02/03/2020 12:27

I would go and wash hand very frequently! Don't shake hands / kiss / hug people there.

We're due to go to Venice in May and I am still working on the basis that we will go ahead

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 12:33

@HasaDigaEebowai really?

Yes really. This is a really serious disease which could cripple the NHS and people need to stop travelling when they don't have to.

crosspelican · 02/03/2020 12:35

I would 100% go. It will be wonderful.

RocketFire · 02/03/2020 12:37

It’s not yourself or your children you need to worry about though

It’s the elderly/vulnerable health of those when you return....you may not pick up the virus from ‘Rome’ but exposing yourself to so many people from different countries both who are there and at the airports, is a bit reckless

How do you feel about those groups of people potentially catching it from you?

hipslikecinderella · 02/03/2020 12:38

I would not go

caperplips · 02/03/2020 12:39

@RocketFire but the virus is already in the UK so the OP could just as easily pass it along from going about her day to day life, using public transport, in supermarkets, schools etc . Should she stop that too?

crustycrab · 02/03/2020 12:55

Rome isn't in northern Italy. There's no virus there. But there is in the UK

Glitterzzz · 02/03/2020 13:05

That’s my thinking. Yes it could possibly spread over to Rome by the time we go but it’s already here where I live... I guess it’s obvious.. I’m gonna go ;-) thanks everyone for your input !

That is true but life goes on and millions/billions of people's livelihoods depend on tourism. Should they all starve and go bankrupt?

Until the FCO tells people not to travel, they should do so as planned and follow the advice about washing hands and not touching faces etc.

Carrie76 · 02/03/2020 13:11

I’m meant to be going to Milan on the 20th really don’t want to cancel but fear I may have to as it’s in the north. I would definitely go to Rome, enjoy!

TheSoapyFrog · 02/03/2020 13:11

I'd definitely still go. There's a minimal risk to anyone who is otherwise healthy and hygienic.

RocketFire · 02/03/2020 13:13

Ok d SF I reverse then

It’s here in uk not in Rome..... you could take it to Rome unknowingly or infect others on the plane etc

How do you know you aren’t infected

Hingeandbracket · 02/03/2020 13:14

Can I go if you don't want it?

Glitterzzz · 02/03/2020 13:14

How do you know your not?

Alsohuman · 02/03/2020 13:15

Glad you’re going, OP. Good call.

Poptart4 · 02/03/2020 13:16

Get some hand sanitizer and use it regularly. Most viruses enter the body through the mouth and nose. So drink water every 15 mins as this will wash any germs into your belly where the stomach acid will kill it. Also put some hand sanitizer just under your nose to kill any germs that try to enter that way.

This is the advice my gp gave me.
