Coronavirus and AIBU to still go skiing?

My family and I are due to go skiing in a few weeks time. We are booked to go to Italy.

However we are actually staying on the border of Italy and Austria. We are flying in to Austria and our hotel is only 3km from the border on the Italian side. Skiing will be on the Austrian side.

Now I know obviously the border means very little in terms of germ spread but my wider family are freaking out that we are skiing in ‘Northern Italy’ despite the fact that we are 2.5hrs drive from the nearest outbreaks. I live closer to the U.K. outbreaks than that.

If my hotel was 3km west no one would question it We’re inclined to go (obviously depending on how the situation pans out over the next few weeks) as we feel the risks are very low (we’re with kids so no apres ski etc), and we’re no more likely to get it there than here. My biggest concern is a quarantine situation on holiday tbh. Also as there are no travel restrictions where we are going (currently anyway) we’d lose all the money we’ve paid out. About £3k.

So given the CURRENT situation (as we will be monitoring it) AIBU to still go skiing?!

YANBU as things currently stand. All you can do is act on the most up to date information.

I’d be very diligent with hand washing, especially in the airport and on the plane. If you can get hand gel with a minimum of 60% alcohol content then get it and use it. Not sure about wipes for your plane tray table and arm rests but if there’s anything effective to kill viruses I’d do that too.

Have a great holiday.

Thanks. I’ve just spotted another holiday thread with some good advice too although that’s a slightly different situation.

I would be inclined to go but obviously keep an eye on the latest advice from the British Government.

My family were skiing in North Italy over half-term but like you were only 25km from the French boarder. Also we drove to Italy so feel that we were less exposed in coming into contact with colds/bugs.

If I was flying I would take hand sanitizer and bacterial wipes as the trays on airplanes are filthy and general limited contact with other people where possible.

Enjoy your skiing and just take sensible precautions when you get back such as self isolate if anyone becomes down with flu like symptoms and contact the NHS. Also I avoided a friend who is having cancer treatment and haven't done any unnecessary trips even though we are all well.

DS's school ski trip to Northern Italy during the Easter holiday is still going ahead at the moment. They are obviously monitoring the situation. By the sounds of it, we are all going to be exposed one way or another over the next few weeks, so I wouldn't miss a ski trip over it!
