To think the parents in ‘The Parent Trap’ were the worst?

Loved this film as a child and still do, but watching it as an adult I realised the parents were very selfish.

They each hid the fact their child had a twin and allowed other close family members to also hide this fact.

They let each child believe that one had a mother and one had a father that was never interested in being in their lives.

The mother even said they had the arrangement so she’d never have to see the father again ... and therefore never being that bothered about even seeing how her child was doing/growing up

And I never saw them ever apologise for their actions. It was actually the twins worried their parents would be angry at them for switching.

I watched this the other day with my 7yo and I thought the same.
Terrible parents! How do you decide who gets what twin haha

TweetUsOnFacebook · 01/03/2020 20:58

Yes terrible to split twins up!
Love the film though, Lindsay Lohan at her finest. Always feel sad about Natasha Richardson Sad

The Home Alone parents are dreadful too. Who doesn't check their kid has left the house to go on holiday?!

A quote from the original film stayed with me for years: 'Gin's just short for ginger ale'. Was a long time before I found out it wasn't.

I said YABU as it,s just a film. (or films) and parents in a lot of the films are rubbish. But if you think this wouldn,t happen think about tht tragic case of the American TRiplets who were then subject to being a social experiment.

Toybox88 · 01/03/2020 21:08

Is it the Lindsey Lohan one you all know?
The Hayley Mills one was soo much better!

nevermorelenore · 01/03/2020 21:08

Yes! They were truly awful. And the worst part is, they get back together in the end.

Almost as bad as Grandpa Joe from Willy Wonka. Laid in bed all day while his daughter worked her arse off, yet as soon as there was a free visit to a chocolate factory, he's dancing round the room. Lazy sod.

Years ago I worked in a large company where three sisters who were triplets worked. One of the sisters got pregnant with twin girls, but died days after giving birth. The remaining two sisters both wanted to raise the twins and had one each. I didn't know them personally as they worked in a different location to me, but it was the talk of the company. I was one of the few people who thought it was a wicked thing to do.

I'm still horrified no.

44PumpLane · 01/03/2020 21:13

@nevermorelenore oh my god this gives me the rage. Grandpa Joe literally can't be arsed to move, has his daughter running round managing everything. Then he gets the chance of a trip somewhere exciting and suddenly he could probably run a marathon. Absolute bellend!!!

BusterMove · 01/03/2020 21:36

Agree the Hayley Mills version is a million times better!

Darbs76 · 01/03/2020 21:38

My 12yr old daughter said she watched the older version and new one at a sleepover during half term. It got me thinking as her friend and her both have separated parents. But yes of course, really selfish.

FarCanal2 · 01/03/2020 21:41

Love this film but yes, crazy storyline. Also find it hard to believe how much work went into filming this with LL playing both twins - why not just find real twins?! As a side note, did the Keys to the kingdom tour in Magic Kingdom FL and the cabin that features in the film is just out of view behind Splash mountain! That's where those scenes were filmed!

Heatherjayne1972 · 01/03/2020 21:43

I actually know someone who had a sister when the parents split mother took the sister and father had the son
He is one messed up person

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 01/03/2020 21:59

I always thought that too! At least the twins from Sister, Sister were adopted separately and their adopted parents had no idea they had each adopted a twin.

LangSpartacusCleg · 01/03/2020 22:07

Just to add to the chorus - the original with Hayley Mills was soooo much better!
