To ask server to have clean hands?

I went into my usual deli this afternoon to buy some ham (they slice it for you) and as I approached the counter I realised that the guy serving (one of the regular people who works there) was coming in from the back and had just put a bin down (no gloves). He came to serve me and I asked for the ham. I was hoping he was going to wash his hands/put on gloves but he didn’t, he reached straight into the display fridge for the ham. As he started to unwrap it I said “please could you put gloves on as you’ve just being doing the bin?” As I expected he wasn’t pleased to be told what do do and responded “yes, I’m just unwrapping it” (emphasis on unwrapping - i.e. in a bit of an annoyed way). He then proceeded to unwrap the cling film from the ham with his bin-emptying hands and finally put gloves on when he’d finished that which I think is a bit gross and probably not what H&S for catering advises.

I felt embarrassed for making a fuss but also grossed out by the situation.

WIBU?!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I actually mentioned it to my mum this evening and she said she spoke to the same guy when he was handling money then food without washing his hands so now I’m really annoyed at his lack of care!

Reading your responses has made me think about all the other issues that I haven’t even noticed! I’m going to speak to the manager ASAP and not go there again.

My local bakery have a very prominent sign on the front of the counter about wearing plastic gloves and the transmission of pathogens. To paraphrase they basically say it's more hygienic not to wear gloves. Fine, whatever. But what makes me 🤢 is the fact they take people's money, handle all the dirty cash and change and touch the till, then they grab your loaf of bread with their bare hands.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 21:59

I expect once we come out the other side of COVID19 we will be all over hand hygiene. Buy stocks in latex gloves because they will be all the rage this next decade.

Samtsirch · 01/03/2020 22:24

I used to run a deli and this breaches basic hygiene training, you are absolutely not being unreasonable and it seems he was rude to you due to embarrassment about being pulled up over his unacceptable hygiene standards.
Most people would wash their hands after handling a bin when in their own homes , let alone whilst serving a paying customer.

Doilooklikeatourist · 01/03/2020 22:33

We went into a cafe today , just to check whether or not they’d still be open on our way home
The waitress was petting a dog , she came over to see to us , having just sprayed her hands with what I assume was sanitiser
We didn’t call in on our way back
I don’t understand the trend that dogs go into cafes and shops

How can anyone refuse to wash their hands after taking cash and emptying bins. It’s just wrong

Avocadohips · 01/03/2020 22:41

To paraphrase they basically say it's more hygienic not to wear gloves

It is way too many years since I worked on sainsburys deli but they used to say this in their training. We did wash our hands very very frequently though and use plastic tare paper to handle all food with.

Avocadohips · 01/03/2020 22:44

From what I've seen working in other food handling places, wearing gloves can make the staff lazy about hygiene and cross-contamination. At sainsburys I wouldn't have dreamed of handling cooked ham after cooked chicken - in some of the places I subsequently worked you'd be lucky if they remembered to wipe their gloved hands on their dirty apron between raw and cooked food Envy

What beats the heck out of me is the 11% who said YABU Confused

Just keep your fingers crossed that the guy does the same when the inspectors come to call ...

IFellOffADivingBoardInGuernsey · 01/03/2020 23:01

A colleague of mine didn't wash her hands after going to the loo, then went back to her till and promptly handled the customers loose veg!

IFellOffADivingBoardInGuernsey · 01/03/2020 23:03

And I hated it when customers had their money in their mouth, then they'd hand it to you!
Dripping with saliva!
Yeah, cheers for that!!

Aliceintheunderworld · 01/03/2020 23:18

@Doilooklikeatourist this is just one of the many many reasons why I don't eat in places that allow dogs in. It's rank.

Oldraver · 02/03/2020 16:48

Zuzzed I can only explain as putting her hand in her hair and ruffling it. All while she was leaning on the bench bit that's in front of the meats

She was effectively showering the meats with whatever was on her head

Oldraver · 02/03/2020 16:49

Nurse... yes they've recently got a pizza counter at ours and she does the same. We've never bought pizza there

You don't live in Oxfordshire do you ?

Alsohuman · 02/03/2020 16:52

I’d have said I’d changed my mind and bought the ham elsewhere.
