Would you travel within the UK at the moment?

We are due to travel from the north west to see family in Edinburgh, on 12 March. We had planned to go by train. I think we should cancel and not go because of Corona, husband thinks I am being dramatic and overreacting massively. What would you do?

I am very anxious a lot of the time so will accept I might be being ridiculous!

It wouldn't cross my mind not to travel if I needed to go somewhere.

myself2020 · 01/03/2020 15:49

I would go (and indeed i do go on trains a lot). you either need to completely self isolate, or just luve with the risk. every trip outside your door has the risk (and edinburgh hasn’t been identified as a hot spot)

tiredanddangerous · 01/03/2020 15:50

Yes i would. It wouldn’t even occur to me not to!

Pipandmum · 01/03/2020 15:50

Of course I would. In fact I just went to London last week to a very crowded tourist hotspot. Didn't think twice about it.

Boom45 · 01/03/2020 15:50

Yep. But I get busy trains regularly for work so it wouldn't be that unusual a thing for me.

evespudding · 01/03/2020 15:51

Yes, went to Edinburgh by train at half term. Just follow handwashing advice.

GinDrinker00 · 01/03/2020 15:51

YABU. Just wear a face mask if you must and regularly wash your hands.

Thymelord · 01/03/2020 15:51

I am not going to show MrThyme the responses, he shall not find out he was right! Grin

Thanks for the replies, helps to put things in perspective.

If you are infected or around someone who is infected... and you are bringing Coronavirus to Scotland then Yes YABU...

WorraLiberty · 01/03/2020 15:52

There are millions of people in the UK travelling around on public transport - getting to and from work and school.

So yes, I would.

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 15:53

Yes.

Frankiecandle · 01/03/2020 15:56

Yes I would. I have to use public transport every day to get to work as do millions of people.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/03/2020 15:57

Yes, I've just booked some day trips for Easter holidays to entertain the kids so not even essential journeys.

lljkk · 01/03/2020 16:00

I'm with your husband.

AnneElliott · 01/03/2020 16:03

Yes I would go. I've just come back from SW England and am travelling for work next week up north.

It wouldn't occur to me not to, unless the advice was to limit non essential travel.

MitziK · 01/03/2020 16:05

I'd see whether there was a cheap offer on first class. At least that way, you get your own seats, access to powerpoints, fewer suitcases in your way and you're less likely to be stuck in a packed carriage wedged directly under the nose of the person who is about to become Edinburgh Patient Zero.

But I am a complete misanthrope where train travel is concerned - I'd go first class every time I could; after doing the Paddington-Penzance cattle run after the two preceding hourly services had been cancelled, so the fact we had reservations meant absolutely nothing in Standard Class, leading to me and my walking stick being trapped sitting on the floor by the toilet for 5 hours whilst utter cunts people put their giant suitcases in seats and the guard was unable to get along the carriages to tell them to fuck off.

Sparklesocks · 01/03/2020 16:06

I would travel yes

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/03/2020 16:07

DS and I are travelling to the south coast in the easter holidays and I will certainly still be going.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 16:10

I wouldn't cancel a pre booked trip but I'm not booking anything now. I'll wait till it's all over. I'm someone who doesn't mind staying at home so it's no hardship. I WFH so not mingling with people much anyway, so might as well keep my risk very low.

Alsohuman · 01/03/2020 16:11

I think your husband’s spot on. On all counts.

Hotcuppatea · 01/03/2020 16:11

Of course I would.

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 16:14

Just booked a weekend away first week in May for a meetup of a special interest group I'm in.

PleasantVille · 01/03/2020 16:14

My goodness, it wouldn't occur to me to make any alterations to my normal life at all. Your DH is absolutley right, it was be a complete over-reaction at this stage to change any plans unless they include visiting an isolation ward without washing your hands.

FriendlyJanitor · 01/03/2020 16:15

You're safe, we don't have it up here! Wink

G1nF1zz · 01/03/2020 16:17

Yes I would travel, plus Edinburgh is lovely. I would probably take my hand sanitiser for public transport and just remember to wash hands as the government, and general hygiene, recommends.
