Would you travel within the UK at the moment?

We are due to travel from the north west to see family in Edinburgh, on 12 March. We had planned to go by train. I think we should cancel and not go because of Corona, husband thinks I am being dramatic and overreacting massively. What would you do?

I am very anxious a lot of the time so will accept I might be being ridiculous!

I know someone who works at PHE who thinks it's quite likely we will enter a lockdown situation in the not too distant future

Meruem · 01/03/2020 19:32

Southwark don’t bother warning people. They will just claim you have “health anxiety” Hmm

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 19:35

The thing I’m struggling with on thIs thread is that everyone is just thinking about themselves.

Because they still have to work and pay bills and that requires, for most, mixing with people and also using public transport. Life can't come to a standstill for a probability. Respiratory viruses are nigh on impossible to fully contain because people need to breathe. My sister has lupus. Her husband has 2 stents, a defib, serious heart condition. They have to still go to work.

This post is about a non essential trip. Plenty of people saying they will still be going on non essential holidays. Nothing to do with work and paying bills.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 19:37

If you look back at what I was saying I wasn’t talking about work. I was talking about non essential trips for leisure purposes. No one “needs” those. But yes of course many people still need to work.

AhoyMrBeaver · 01/03/2020 19:47

I spend most of my week mixing with hundreds of people, which doesn't worry me. I'm not sure why it would be a bigger risk if I did that on a train to Scotland or in another city. A few amateur epedemiologists' opinions aren't going to stop me from doing the things I have planned, because it isn't a risky thing to do.

Nicknacky · 01/03/2020 19:48

That’s Scotland got our first confirmed case.

Jem2510 · 01/03/2020 19:48

i Have no disregard for anyone. That’s why I follow strict hygiene protocol and if I had contact with someone who had symptoms I would self isolate or if I showed signs I would self isolate. It’s about being realistic

Waspnest · 01/03/2020 19:48

Of course there is the argument that if we all voluntarily limited our non essential travel right now, we may avoid the need for harsher restrictions later on!

I agree with this. I understand that the government are trying to balance public safety with keeping the economy growing and so trying to maintain travel as normal. But if the situation gets worse because of asymptomatic people travelling we may end up by needing the restrictions anyway (IYSWIM). Personally I'd travel in the UK if necessary but not go abroad.

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 19:51

No one “needs” those.

Oh, please! No one needs a lot of things. It's absolute panicky bollocks to think everyone should not travel because of bloody coronavirus. People have completely lost reason over this.

Beemail1 · 01/03/2020 19:54

Interesting responses here. We'll have to see how it all unfolds but travel is strongly linked with transmission. I suspect with everyone carrying on "as usual" we are going to have our movement restricted before long and closure of schools etc will bring its own difficulties. Thin some caution would be well advised. Surely?

katy1213 · 01/03/2020 19:55

But in first class, you're more likely to sit beside someone who caught it when skiing!

If you're this stressed now, you'll be dead of worry long before Coronavirus gets you!

Aragog · 01/03/2020 19:58

Yes I would still travel within the UK, and still travel abroad, so long as Government advice says its fine.

I am immunosuppressed myself due to a medical issue and medication, but I can't put my life on hold. I am taking precautions such as regularly washing my hands and faces using anti bac gel in between times, etc. but I have been doing that all winter as we had some norovirus outbreaks, plus various other viruses, in my school and local schools earlier in the winter.

If the Government changes their advice I will obviously follow what they say.

Meruem · 01/03/2020 19:59

I will repeat. I am talking about non essential days trips or weekends away, not yet booked or paid for. For a month or two. While we try to contain the outbreak. I am not talking about no one going anywhere ever again. It’s panicky bollocks to think I do mean that.

Aragog · 01/03/2020 19:59

I know someone who works at PHE who thinks it's quite likely we will enter a lockdown situation in the not too distant future

If and when that occurs I am sure people will change what they are currently doing to follow the advice the Government and official sources give out.

Beemail1 · 01/03/2020 20:00

Also no antibac available here...

datasgingercatspot · 01/03/2020 20:03

Well, go right ahead and do that then, Mer.

Growingboys · 01/03/2020 20:04

Of course you should go

clary · 01/03/2020 20:08

@planningaheadtoday where is that advice given out? It's different from what I have read (I work in NHS comms and so I need to know this!)

NemophilistRebel · 01/03/2020 20:12

I won’t be travelling by public transport at the moment.
Going by my own car is fine as I know who’s got in it

But then again I’ve got 3 confirmed cases near me so not taking any chances being pregnant and with asthmatic husband and child

planningaheadtoday · 01/03/2020 20:12

@clary
I believe it was WHO either today or yesterday.

I'm trying to find it again.

Waspnest · 01/03/2020 20:12

Clary I think someone at the WHO has said it but I assume the UK government aren't saying it yet or you would have been told?

WeekendW0rk2020 · 01/03/2020 20:19

There is no guidance from Government about stopping travel

I'm going on a mini break next weekend with family

We are all traveling around as normal for work, sport, hobbies, school etc

Spidey66 · 01/03/2020 20:22

Wouldn't cross my mind not too.

You may as well stay at home, having your food delivered (by driver s wearing masks in case your loose food is infected)mm working from home ancc hon e educating your kids if that's the way you think.

Spidey66 · 01/03/2020 20:23

Fat fingers but you gert my drift.
