Dear parents that are worried to take your kids on a flight: (As someone who just took 4 toddlers on a flight from Vietnam to Boston, here’s our advice)

Don’t worry about anyone else except for the well-being of your children and yourself.

Don’t worry if your kid doesn’t want to sit still.
Don’t worry if your kid cries.
Don’t worry if your kids makes noises when they are excited.
Don’t worry if your kid runs up and down the aisles.
Don’t worry if your kid happens to
kick the seat in front of you.
Don’t worry if your kid leaves a few crumbs on the ground.
Don’t worry if your kid turns the reading light on and off…
Don’t
Worry
What
Others
May
Think
Of
You
As
A
Parent.
Worry about your kids well-being;
Worry whether your kid is happy;
Worry whether their diaper is clean;
Worry about the logistics of wherever you’re going;
Worry about things that are IN your control!

No doubt — every passenger deserves a comfortable in-flight experience and you should do everything in your power to help this.
BUT
Kids are not robots and we can’t control their every move — no matter how much we prepare.
They are kids.
They will be kids.
They will act like kids.
Be respectful but don’t waste your time worrying what others think. This silly idea that we must apologize for traveling with children is slowly becoming the norm and it’s ridiculous.

Again, this doesn’t mean letting your kids be maniacs. It doesn’t mean being disrespectful and making a mess and not cleaning it up. Or, letting your kids scream the entire flight and not trying to make them happy (though sometimes this is unavoidable). It means to do your best and shake the rest off.

And to those that are flying without children: Tolerance and a
positive attitude will go a long way.

By the way — our kids were not well behaved on the 13 hour leg. They did not sleep. They cried often. They made crumbs. It was hell for us because we were exhausted. We probably took over 10,000 steps up and down the aisles. But, now it’s over and in the past and we already forgot about the other passengers on the flight :)

WOW I honestly don't mind if you see parents struggling but they are trying there best to comfort and control there kids.
But arseholes like this who really don't care about anyone but themselves or the impact they have on others is selfish.

LuckyLickitung · 01/03/2020 14:37

Oh so much mental energy I have spent on my DCs and the effects of their behaviour on the general public. I won't vouch that they've never played up and been annoying, they certainly have had their moments but I have always tried to keep them as civilised as possible, and generally, they're maturing OK (sometimes we get days where ASD is being more problematic than others, but we try...) Most people mind far less when they can see parents putting in an effort to parent. I've been on a short flight where a baby cried incessently from take-off to landing, and where possible tge parents did what they reasonably could to soothe the baby. It was no fun for anyone, but c'est la vie.

That poem reads very much like an invitation for parents to abdicate from trying to the detriment of everyone else in the vincinity and ultimately the long term detriment of children without appropriate boundaries. Very few children behave impeccably all the time, that's a reason why parenting them is so important.

fairlyplump · 01/03/2020 14:38

what lovely children your are raising, I am sure they will turn out as ignorant as you

Jux · 01/03/2020 14:41

I hate that parent.

Butchyrestingface · 01/03/2020 14:44

The responses are going to be skewed heavily to YABU because of the confusing wording.

So YABU for not being clear this was a C&P job. Smile

NewAgain123 · 01/03/2020 14:45

If your child is kicking the back of my seat and you, the parent, don't tell them to pack it in, then you and I are going to fall out.
Control your child in public and have respect for the people around you.
Teach your child that there's rules for everyone and we all have to live by them

Dontdisturbmenow · 01/03/2020 14:48

You're the exact type of parent I dispise. All about asking for respect and tolerance yet finding it totally acceptable that their kids show no such qualities nor you to encourage them

BUT
Kids are not robots and we can’t control their every move — no matter how much we prepare.

You can't control every children move, but you should be able to control most of them. If you can't, then there is indeed something wrong with the way you are bringing them up, ie. with a sense that life centers around them and others should adapt to their behaviours, needs and wants.

And yes, I brought up two children on my own, we travelled a lot, long trains journeys, flights and somehow, they managed to behave, stay quiet, not move from their seat, not kick chairs, and just take notice of others around them and act in a similar manner.

Nothing to be proud about that post.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 01/03/2020 14:49

Bloody hell, I traveled frequently longhaul with my child since he was a baby. Peak level of entitlement I would say.

Butchyrestingface · 01/03/2020 14:51

Just keeked a swatch at her Insta, God help me. Most recent photo features one small child sitting on toilet with bottoms down. Lovely. Hmm

Northernsoullover · 01/03/2020 14:53

I thought it was fairly clear that the OP didn't write this due to the title Confused

WorraLiberty · 01/03/2020 14:54

YABU for advertising her Insta here - thus giving her even more of the attention she craves.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 01/03/2020 14:54

My mother says that badly behaved children are like badly behaved dogs - a bloody nuisance to everyone. And it's unkind to the children too.

Ylvamoon · 01/03/2020 14:56

Who is mad enough to take 4 toddlers on a long haul flight anyway?
I believe you have to be the ignorant parent asshole that everyone hates by the end of the flight. It's that or losing your sanity!

florascotia2 · 01/03/2020 14:57

Just a quick note: Cutting and pasting a whole entry from Instagram without the original writer's permission is potentially copyright infringement:

The rules are not clear, and I'm not saying that the OP has actually fallen foul of them, but it's always much safer to send a link to a webpage rather than to copy chunks of text:

ittakes2 · 01/03/2020 14:59

I have kids and have regularly took my toddler twins on 24hrs long haul trips. And I have to say you are being a nutter - if you don't care for others at least care for your own kids. I can't believe you can have four under 5 and still think them running up and down aisles is just an inconvenience to others. Small children running around aisles + accidents - for the elderly and others who might not be steady on their feet and for the kids themselves if they run into a host or hostess and end up with a burning hot coffee on their head.
What your post should have said is its daft to travel for 13 hours with 4 children under 5 - wait until they are older and you can teach them to behave in public.

ittakes2 · 01/03/2020 15:03

I am sorry but I am not surprised your children are so badly behaved - you think you should only worry about yourself - you are their role model and it is no wonder your children have learnt from you not to care about how their actions are affecting others.

BruceAndNosh · 01/03/2020 15:04

Is the entire opening post a cut and paste or is some the OP's opinion?

mrsBtheparker · 01/03/2020 15:11

Again, this doesn’t mean letting your kids be maniacs.

Looks like that's exactly what they're doing and that their breeders are proud of their gross negligence and failure.
Do realise that you're children may be the centre of your universe, they're not the centre of anyone else's.

mrsBtheparker · 01/03/2020 15:13

Obviously that 'you're' should be 'your'.

Putyourshoeson99 · 01/03/2020 15:18

Fecking hell. We've travelled long-haul a lot with baby/toddler, toddler/young child etc for family reasons and I call absolute BS on that post.
Our kids managed to NOT run up and down aisles, kick seats, play with window shutters, turn lights on and off or in fact do anything else that annoying because we don't bloody let them!
It does require a high level of parent involvement tho, maybe the 'influencer' can't be arsed to read to them, colour with them, play games with them, watch movies with them or walk with them where there's space or any of the many other things you can do to help keep them entertained because that is quite knackering.
What a brat - the parent I mean...

mencken · 01/03/2020 15:24

looking at the pictures, these semi-feral kids are clearly being brought up with a shedload of money given those locations. Why not take some staff on the plane ?

let us hope it won't be long before the instagram 'influencers' are seen as the laughing stock they are.

bingbangbing · 01/03/2020 15:28

It's peak bollocks

Echobelly · 01/03/2020 15:30

Things that can't necessarily be helped by parents on flights:

  • Kids making excited noises
  • Kids talking a lot
  • Kids crying
  • Kids needing the loo
  • Kids being whiney

Things that can and should be controlled by parents on flights:

  • Turning lights on and off
  • Kicking seats
  • Running up and down repeatedly (OK, I get once or twice, but not continuously)
Isithometimeyet0987 · 01/03/2020 15:31

I wouldn’t tolerate that behavious from my dd 4. She flys frequently with me and dh including some long haul to America and such. I make sure I bring enough things to occupy her while travelling and I make sure to have headphones and enough treats for her. I know kids can be hard work on flights but that doesn’t mean you are allowed to let them do whatever they want because that’s just lazy patenting. Letting your kid kick someone’s seat or turn the light on and off is a selfish inconsiderate parent. As for letting them run up and down the aisles, you don’t have the right to complain when your child is hurt running into someone else or a trolly or a hot drink spills on them or they fall and get hurt.

mummmy2017 · 01/03/2020 15:35

The title makes it very clear that the post is something that has shocked the OP.
