I'm not by the way...but neither am i overly anxious about it.
Some of my friends are and are also very against Greta Thunberg etc. So is it possiblook e to be worried about climate change but anti Greta and/ or do you think climate change is baloney?

Given the recent bush fires in Australia i think we should all be aware that we are all at the mercy of our climate, even if we don't think change is man made.

Thank you Kid, you have met my expectations of people who think climate change is man made. The huge ego, the hubris, the retreat to name calling and swearing- a mark of low IQ.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/03/2020 19:35

I’m a sceptic. I remember when it was called global warming, and the whole planet was going to get hotter and hotter. Then when it rained non stop or we had really cold winters, it became ‘climate change’
I think it’s to do with solar flares and sunspots

KidLorneRoll · 02/03/2020 19:39

Nah, the mark of a low IQ and a huge ego is someone who in the face of overwhelming concensus still sticks their head in the sand and denies what is very clearly happening before our very eyes.

"I know better than the experts!"

Yup, that'll be your huge ignorant ego talking.

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 02/03/2020 19:40

I'm amazed so many of you understand the cyclical pattern but not the enormous leap in this cycle compared to previous.
Theres so much scientific evidence from many many sources.
I don't understand why its so bad to go along with it?

KidLorneRoll · 02/03/2020 19:42

" I remember when it was called global warming, and the whole planet was going to get hotter and hotter. Then when it rained non stop or we had really cold winters, it became ‘climate change’"

The term climate change was coined in the mid 50s, because of papers such as 'The Carbon Dioxide Theory of Climatic Change', written in 1956.

The term 'global warming' came later. There is no factual basis to what you are saying.

HTH.

The term gl

The lacking of scientific understanding, the ignorant arrogance is appalling.

nobodyimportant · 02/03/2020 20:01

If you don't understand why the evidence suggests that current climate change is man-made rather than part of the normally expected cycles, this is a very good resource...

climate.nasa.gov/

Please read it. This stuff matters.

nobodyimportant · 02/03/2020 20:07

Another good resource...

All but one scientist thought disease was caused by bad air, but it was the minority view that had correctly identified bacteria, viruses etc as the causes

For every Pasteur a once in a generation scientist who invented the field of microbiology you have a thousand sceptics and cranks who refuse to believe the scientific consensus and are ultimately proven wrong.

Pasteur won over scientists with a wealth of data and evidence. He didn't just say, nobody really knows what causes disease and decay so maybe my theory is the right one. He made a very convincing case.

Calling a 17 year old a little shit must make you feel really great about your life.

midgebabe · 02/03/2020 20:56

As a real scientist, I think Greta is pretty cool. She manages to travel and make a real impact without jetting off everywhere

Pringlesonthetable · 02/03/2020 21:11

Whilst I don't doubt humans need to rein in their consumption to reduce impact on resources. I often wonder if people realise the impact if we did this on a basis that will make an impression..
These kids 'striking' from school, how many are taken to school by mum/dad in cars...get a bike kid..new mobile phone? nah..wasteful consumption...holiday abroad..nope..stay at home..job when you leave school...need to walk/bike there. Gap year travelling..nope.
Greta is going making her fortune from her exposure/notoriety..Ema-Mae from Surbiton, zero hours contract for you. Ok..that last one might not be...but options for little miss/master average will lessen even further.
I know one extinction rebellion protester. Spoilt young lady, family with money. Took a gap year travelling, using planes. Now up in arms at airport runway plans! Yeah ok kid.
Plenty want 'something done about climate change' as long as it doesn't impact on their lives or reduce what they have.

midgebabe · 02/03/2020 21:13

So some people get it wrong, isn't an excuse for not trying is it?

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 02/03/2020 21:42

Cold periods and excessive rainfall are exactly what we would expect in a system with a heavy perturbation from steady-state homeostasis - pumping more energy into a complex system such as weather does not just cause straightforward heating since climate is determined by the atomsphere, oceans, land and biomass.

CO2 is increasing at 9 times the annual rate as it did in the Eocenee warm period 55 million years ago (titanoboa and polar temperate forests)...

MissingLinker · 02/03/2020 22:39

*Flagellating the bad west and lauding worthy noble savage is typical of an Anti West agenda

India - China - Gulf states creating pretty wee islands to look pretty where are you now Greta, Extinction rebellion and the hypocites?*

With regards to gulf states you have a point. However, China's carbon footprint per person is a few tons per capita larger than the UK's when looking at production based emissions and a few tons smaller per capita when looking at consumption based emissions. It's a country of over a billion people, of course it's overall footprint is going to be larger than a country of 66 million.

India, with a population also over 1 billion, has a carbon footprint per person far smaller than the UK's with both production and consumption derived emissions.

However hypocritical you may think Greta to be, I imagine she'd struggle telling a country whose citizens, many of whom are in absolutely dire living conditions with virtually no carbon footprint, that they are the ones at fault, just so people in the UK and Australia and USA can go on believing that the only reason their countries are being targeted is as part of some anti West rhetoric.

UYScuti · 02/03/2020 22:42

I'm sceptical about predictions that are made regarding climate change I'm sceptical about the amount of it which is is man-made but I am completely in favour of looking after the environment, being environmentally friendly, not polluting, and being as sustainable as possible

heartsonacake · 02/03/2020 23:18

KidLorneRoll People like you make me glad I just don’t give a shit about climate change because I would not want to be even remotely associated with you.

Bizawit · 02/03/2020 23:22

Omg 50% of voters think YABU? Shock does that mean 50% of people don’t believe climate change is an issue?!? We are f***.

Skierrdery · 02/03/2020 23:22

So we know what happened within a 100 year time period 55 million years ago? Give me a fucking break.

Skierrdery · 02/03/2020 23:23

I'm with the geologists on this I'm afraid.

squeekums · 02/03/2020 23:56

I’m not a climate sceptic, the truth of it is that I just don’t really care. Climate changes; it always has and it always will
Greta is a sanctimonious piece of work and I would be embarrassed and ashamed if she were my child. She puts people off the climate cause who might otherwise be interested

Pretty much this
I got bigger things to worry about. Im not gunna add stress to my life over something i cant control. My care factor extends to my daily life and my stresses, my families needs.
And yep, i wont be lectured on how to live by a child who has no real life experience. Has she ever been homeless? had to keep a house running, payed bills, food shopping?

KidLorneRoll · 03/03/2020 00:09

@heartsonacake oh noes. I'm gutted. I do try not to associate with selfish ignorant fact deniers so I probably wouldn't want to be best buds with you either.

@heartsonacake I agree. Her attitude is arrogant beyond belief, she comes across as a petulant child who can't be told anything, and she seems to have some sort of Messiah complex. I mute the news when she is speaking.

I think that climate change is happening, but am unsure how much of it is being driven by humans. I believe that our best option is to mitigate the effects of climate change, while also striving to reduce our effect on the planet's ecosystem. Pollution and waste are bad for the planet and all the species on it, so we need to clean up our act and look after this place, as there is no Planet B.

heartsonacake · 03/03/2020 03:07

KidLorneRoll What facts have been presented that I have denied? I never said I didn’t believe in climate change; I said I didn’t give a shit about it.

And my point is that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, so if you want people to join your cause you need to change your attitude. Being a sanctimonious arse is just going to make people determined not to engage.
