What is a wet cut at the hairdresser?

I’ve been silly and asked for a wet cut but realised I don’t know what that is! Am I supposed to turn up with wet hair? Or will I leave with wet hair? I feel so dumb!!

OP posts:

My hairdressers wet cut is just it not being blow dried. I don’t leave with wet hair.

He always drys it. Otherwise how does he know how it looks dry?

DaveMinion · 29/02/2020 10:41

Wash and cur but no blow dry. I always have a wet cut as I hate having my hair touched but have thick coarse hair so needs to be wet to be cut and a spray bottle ain’t gonna cut it (pardon the pun). I don’t ever blow dry my hair myself so not fussed about paying to have it done either so yeah I leave with wet hair.

Redcrayons · 29/02/2020 10:42

Round here it’s Wash, cut but don’t dry. Although by the time they’ve finished cutting it’s usually semi-dry anyway.
I’ve never seen anyone turn up to a salon with wet hair.

VenusTiger · 29/02/2020 10:44

Wow so many different theories - OP, they 'blast off' i.e. they get a junior to dry it with fingers or a really pathetic comb (in other words, they don't style it or use any products when they dry it). You don't leave a salon with wet hair!! The stylist needs to see it dry before you leave, especially if you have a fringe or layers.

lanthanum · 29/02/2020 10:48

Wet cut at min is where they wash it, cut it, and then I walk home with it wet. Suits me.

rainbowlou · 29/02/2020 10:49

I had a wet cut last month. She washed my hair, cut it and I left with it wet.

redwoodmazza · 29/02/2020 10:51

I prefer to dry my own hair at home. I ask for a wet cut - and am quite happy to leave with wet hair no matter what the weather is.
Recently my salon has taken to giving my hair a quick blast and a semi dry - although I'd be happy if they didn't.
I just want to get home, have a shower to wash all the hair cuttings off [yuck] and dry my hair how I like it to be dried.

BalloonSlayer · 29/02/2020 10:52

You go in with hair in any stage of dirtiness, They wash your hair for you, cut it while it's wet, then blow dry = cut and blow dry.

You go in with clean dry hair, they spray it with water from a bottle then cut it. It usually dries a bit whilst being cut, or they might dry it off quickly for you with a hair dryer (but don't take ages about it or use products) = wet cut (in other words same as blokes have at the barber)

I have never ever heard of anyone having their hair washed, dried, and THEN cut. It needs to be wet for them to cut it properly.

ClientQueen · 29/02/2020 10:55

@BalloonSlayer unless it's curly. I sometimes have a dry cut where I go in, sit down and they start cutting. But that's more a curly hair specialist so they can see exactly how each curl sits and it's cut curl by curl

Alsohuman · 29/02/2020 10:57

How on earth can you tell if the cut’s right if it’s not blow dried? I feel really sorry for all the hairdressers being asked to do half a job.

BruceAndNosh · 29/02/2020 10:59

I have a "dry cut" but that means I wash it that morning so it is clean, arrive with dry hair. She wets it with a spray, cuts it, then blasts it dry without actually blow drying it. I leave with mostly dry hair.
That's when I am having the same style each month.
If I am having a restyle a would have a full wash, cut and blow dry

Looks like everyone's definition is different!

imnottoofussed · 29/02/2020 11:01

At my salon they do three options:

Cut and blow dry = wash, cut, product and blow dry into style

Dry cut = no wash, no product, they might spray a bit of water on the hair before cutting, hair is cut, no blow dry

Wet cut = wash, no product, hair is cut and then blasted a bit so it's not dripping wet

SpokeTooSoon · 29/02/2020 11:04

A wet cut means no blow dry - unless you specify at the time of booking that you want a blow dry and you’ll be charged more.

Do you want a blow dry? You need to book one.

It’s a bit unusual, because most decent salons insist on blow drys (even if they charge separately). They don’t want you to leave the salon with damp messy hair because a. They can’t see the finished look of their work and b. It’s a bad advert for the salon.

Sometimes it’s just a way of listing the options so it looks cheaper. Blow drys add a lot on the the overall cost of your apt.

ClientQueen · 29/02/2020 11:04

@Alsohuman mine is cut dry, or if I use the other hairdresser who cuts it wet I can pop back to ask for any bits to be trimmed. If hairdressers knew how to dry curly hair then I would let them!

SpokeTooSoon · 29/02/2020 11:04

And yes, even without a blow dry, they would blast it a bit so you’re not leaving with wet hair. More damp.

Rockbird · 29/02/2020 11:05

My mother has a wet cut. They don't dry it after cutting. She absolutely hates the way they blow dry her hair so she prefers to do it at home.

EverythingChanges321 · 29/02/2020 11:07

I’d never recommend having a wet cut unless it’s a one length straight cut.
When I cut hair, I blow dry it afterwards in the style and then I’ll go back in with my scissors and finish the cut. I need to see how it lies once it’s dried.

To be honest, a salon that offers a wet cut isn’t likely to be all that great at cutting hair.

Knittedfairies · 29/02/2020 11:07

I wouldn't be embarrassed to ring and ask OP; it's obvious from this thread that it means different things to different people.

DippyAvocado · 29/02/2020 11:08

I always have a wet cut, my hair is washed and cut, no blowdry, not even to dry it off a bit. I leave with wet hair, this is entirely my decision as I would pay quite a lot extra for the blowdry.

Exactly this. I've been having wet cuts for years. They always shampoo it, just don't blow-dry afterwards. Sometimes they will offer a rough dry if it is cold out.

saraclara · 29/02/2020 11:08

When my hair was a different style, I always asked for a wet cut, because I preferred it dried naturally rather than being styled with a blow dry.
I was almost always asked if I wanted it rough drying so I didn't leave with entirely damp hair, but I rarely bothered as i was only going to be jumping in the car outside and going straight home.

But yes, OP, they will definitely wash it for you.

NastiestThing · 29/02/2020 11:10

If you get a wet cut without a blow-dry, they will ROUGH DRY your hair. Not make you leave with actually wet hair. A blow-dry gives you a proper blow-dry technique with all the proper brushes etc.

cologne4711 · 29/02/2020 11:10

I have a wet cut and the hairdresser just roughly dries it off afterwards so that she can check the cut. A proper blow dry would cost a lot more.

cologne4711 · 29/02/2020 11:11

Cross post with NastiestThing (I am sure you're not).

Chloemol · 29/02/2020 11:11

As a sister of a hairdresser a wet cut is wash and cut and you leave without your hair being dried.

Emmelina · 29/02/2020 11:13

Mine will wash it, cut it while wet and dry it. They won’t fully style it unless I specifically go for “cut and blow dry”.
